the book was the memoir of a nice Jewish kid from the 161st Street area. the dates didn't coordinate, because in the late 70's, the area was completely unsafe and lacked nice white ethnic family people. this may have been 15 or 20 years earlier. it continues with bi-chapter descriptions as his life as a physically grown bohemian in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, (whoo-hoo!!) doing the whole sunshine dance by seeing weird psychiatrists, eating organic food, and allowing a trampy young WASP boyfriend ...more

This is an amazing account of a young mans struggle to understand and come to terms with who and what he is. The author (my brother btw) challenges the reader to look past societal norms and create and accept the path that is right for our self. I loved this book. Really, not much more to say. Jewish gay boy bildungsroman, non-linear time frame. The diagesis is amazing in this novel. The switching between present and past creates a lovely frame for the modern plotline. I wasn't so hot on the ending, but the characters sold it for me. They seemed to breath. I rather fell in love with some of them.

Lovely story of gay Jewish man in his 30s dealing with his present lover, a performance artist/Aids activist and their relationship, and his memories of a teenage love affair he had during his high school years in the Bronx. The writing is poetic. Excellent.

Overblown. Ridiculous, unbearable characters -- many unbelievable. The sex scenes seem false. Reads like porn dialog except it's about AIDS activism. Politically correct in the worst way.
