Reasons Why I DNF:
1) The narrator, Michael Praed, needed some clamps on his sensitive areas and someone to flip the switch to give him a bit of energy. It was a dull reading, and his pace was slow, so it felt like things were never moving along. Yeah, yeah, I know. How could Robin of Sherwood & Prince Michael of Moldavia suck ass?!?! Well, there should be some kind of retribution for that stupid Dynasty wedding bomb cliffie.

Historical Fiction can be a fickle genre, at times. It can be hard to pin the genre down, and its popularity doesn't seem as widespread as most others (which is, I imagine, part of the reason historical fiction is tucked into the folds of the 'fiction & literature' section in most bookstores, rather than enjoying its own separate section). Yet, in broad terms I think of historical fiction writers much like I do science fiction writers; landing on a spectrum: with one end being professional h...more
Recipe for a Ben Kane book: add in lots of violence, hot women (who will be subject to big dollups of mysogyny/prostitution), a druid/seer and a barbarian warrior. Mix together and throw in to a turbulent period in Rome's history. Crowbar into the narrative tedious descriptions of ancient weapons and armour and how they were used, as well as lots of swearing, et voila! Your very own Ben Kane book.

The Forgotten Legion is based around one of the most infamous eras of Roman history, the triumvirate of Pompeii Magnus, Crassus and Julius Caesar. During this period of corruption and instability emerges two tales. The first is that of Tarquinius, an Etruscan warrior and soothsayer who has the ability to tell the future from the stars, the elements and from the innards of animals. At a young age, Tarquinius is told by his teacher that he will travel to Rome and there meet and befriend two Gladia...more

A new title contender
A great debut title, is this the start of something exceptional? I hope so. This book more than many of the other new authors in the genre seems to have something different, a blend of the action of Scarrow, the pace and power of Anthony Riches and his own unique element a bit of mystery and myth that sets it apart.

The Forgotten Legion series is one of the strongest series set in ancient Rome that has been produced to date. The scope of the series in length of years, geographical reach, depth of character and intertwining some of the most tumultuous and important events in the history of he world with the life story of a small number of fictional characters is phenomenal. As a series, it is impossible not to pick up the next book and read on...

I'm always picky when it comes to historical novel (I'm a major history geek), and this one didn't win me over immediately... but I ended up loving it!
It’s the story of an Etruscan seer and soldier named Tarquinius, a gladiator named Brennus and two twins – Fabiola and Romulus, sold by their owner respectively to a brothel and gladiator school at the age of 13. Romulus, Brennus and Tarquinius meet each other when the two former slaves decide to escape to Asia and join Crassus’ army in order to...more

In the waning days of the Republic of Rome, as the Empire of Rome was about to be born, three men struggle to be the first Emperor. In the last century before the common era, this struggle makes life hard on those in the lowest rungs of society – slaves and soldiers. The struggle is told through the eyes of four people – a brother and sister, a Gaul, and an Etruscan, who attempt to survive while their world falls...more

Ben Kane has fast been becoming one of favorite authors, and for good reason, his depiction of ancient Roman culture is gripping, extremely detailed, and outstandingly immersive. From books like Spartacus The Gladiator, Hannibal: Enemy of Rome, and the Forgotten Legion, every single book in its respective series drive images upon images of ancient Rome in all it's gruesome nature, and with The Forgotten Legion, Ben Kane does what he does best and delivers an immensely immersive experience.

This was a solid start to a promising series (well, promising for me as the series was already written...). A bit slow in the beginning and during various sections, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Now, to vent a little... all of you idiots out there who trashed the book because it upset your narrow, rainbow-filled vision of the world - take your effing heads out of the sand. I'm not a big fan of books that describe events which I know how will turn out. So I stay away from fiction set in Punic wars and spartacus' rebellion. While this book is set in period I'm familair with it's still interesting. While it's known how Carrhae will end it's still fun to read about people involved in it.
Another good thing about this book is that diviniations actually work. They play important role but are still tampered with "each man's destiniy is his own" attitude. So even if somebo...more

Lovers of the "chunky" book, rejoice, at a mere 544 pages you will share in a bit of heaven. Those who are slightly intimidated by larger-than-normal tomes, do not let the thickness scare you. The Forgotten Legion is a delightfully engrossing tale based in Ancient Rome. Author Ben Kane does a suburb job mixing fact with fiction to create a story that will not soon be forgotten. The extensive research done by the author is apparent and lends a deeper reading experience and the ability to truly "s...more
In the ludus on the outskirts of Rome, a Gaul named Brennus rises to become one of the greatest gladiators of his day. He becomes friend and mentor to the teenaged Romulus, twin to Fabiola who is sold into prostitution at the same time Romulus becomes the property of the gladitorial school. Brennus and Romulus escape and join with Tarquinius, an Etruscan soothsayer, as mercernaries in the army of Crassus who is setting out to destroy the mighty Parthian army. When inept Crassus is killed, the th...more
I am fascinated by stories of Ancient Rome and am excited to be part of the book blog tour for Ben Kane's debut novel, The Forgotten Legion!
The Forgotten Legion differs from most novels of Ancient Rome in that Ben Kane chose conquered people for the lead characters. Through the stories of the Etrucscan Tarquinius and the Gaul Brennus, we share the experience of conquest by Rome. Somehow, Rome's system of conquest allows the strong and skilled to serve Rome. So, Tarquinius and Brennus who had sto...more

Oh dear. I like historical fiction, and when it's done well it can be exciting, informative and a bloody good read. This book is none of those things. To be honest I gave up half way through it 600 plus pages. The prose is pedestrian, the characters stereotypical and cardboard. The story moves at a snail's pace and I really couldn't find the will to carry on with it. I hate giving up on books but sometimes life is just too short to bother with a bad one.

A decent first novel and the beginning of a trilogy following certain characters involved with the Roman Empire. The first half of the book is essentially a gladiator story while the second half looks at life in the army. As this is a guy's book, there are plenty of brutal battle sequences, murders and fights which leave little to the imagination.
Although there are a few central characters in the story, by far the most interesting are the brother/sister pairing of Romulus and Fabiola, the slave...more

I probably shouldn't write a review for a book I didn't finish, but I really just could not get into this book. I love the premise and the obvious amount of research and enthusiasm that the author put into writing it, but the style is clunky. It's full of exposition that threw me out of the flow of the story and the characters have random info-dumpy lines that make little sense in the context of the conversation. There were other minor things I could probably have dealt with on their own, like t...more

At best, I have a layman's interest in Ancient Rome. But I came across this novel in the downtown bookstore a few weeks ago, thumbed through its contents, was intrigued, and bought it.
This is the first novel in a trilogy. There are 4 principal characters who are at the heart of the story. Tarquinius is an Etruscan proud of his heritage, who has been schooled in the ancient arts of divination by Olenus, a wise and resourceful teacher and mentor. He lives with his parents as slaves on a large esta...more

The structure of this book is the first glaring problem. It's all over the place, jumping back and forth chronologically, sometimes covering many years in one chapter. The prose is decent, although a the slightest bit dry, but Kane does like to ramble on. Listening to the audio version, he spends about twenty minutes describing the reading of entrails of a goat. However, the rambling can make a difference. For example, with Fabiola's first days in the brothel, most writers would h...more

Story is pretty good. The only thing that bothered me was the prostitution thing. I know he is trying to make it as real as possible, but I can't seem to get the idea of child pornography out of my head. I mean, when he was describing the 14 year old protagonist sucking on a twenty year old guy's dick, I was like, whoa! Child pornography popped into my head. I know there must be other books that have this sort of content but I haven't gotten to it yet, but when I do, I will probably put it into...more
This was a finely written piece of historical fiction. Not being a classics scholar I can't vouch for everything in the book but in the notes at the end Kane indicates where his fiction deviated from the record.
It was exciting without being overly explicit. His descriptions of the gladiatorial system and the Roman military were enough to bring home the idea that life in the Empire was brutal. I respect authors who are able to communicate the horror of war without explicitly describing every muti...more

I picked up the 2nd and 3rd parts of this trilogy from a remaindered book catalogue so I thought I'd better read the first book before the others and borrowed it from the local library. Then I read a short magazine article about Ben Kane who said he'd spent one month researching the history behind the trilogy before writing all three books. This showed! The novel is set in the 1st century BC just after the defeat of Spartacus' slave revolt, but at times it read as if it's historical context had...more
I have to confess I only took this out from my library as an audio book because of the reader who was Michael Praed whom I had a not so adolescence crush on since Robin of Sherwood.

I have to be honest, and say I did not finish this book. I was not going to rate it because of it. It did not seem fair to judge a book without completing it. I thought to shelve it and come back to it, but instead I put it with the charity colection, because It took up too much valuable space in my library. So this is why I give it two stars. Two for the author for his knowledge and effort, three stars lacking for its inability to keep me in his prose. I'm no historian so I may not appreciate t...more
I found "The Forgotten Legion" while looking though the "K" section for fiction writers in the local library. The story description caught my attention. I cannot remember reading a book on historical fiction set in the days of the Roman Empire. So it was an interesting change of pace for me. The story was exciting. The characters come from the lower rungs of Roman society- mainly slaves. I like the descriptions of gladiator fighting and the politics of the day. I am no prude, but it was a bit vu...more
It’s my first time reading one of Bane Kane’s books after he kindly introduced himself after noticing my love for the stories of Simon Scarrow’s Eagle series.
After all, he not only recommended his own books but several other authors I may be interested in so it was the least I could do.
Well, I finished reading The Forgotten Legion on the tube travelling to work this morning and to sum it up in a single word, I would describe it as epic.
