I love the blues and this book gets at it from a different angle than the usual "primitive, raw, authentic" thing. The authors use blues lyrics and interviews with country blues singers to draw a portrait of African-American working life from the 1870s to World War II. The Industrial Workers of the World were big in the hobo jungles and it's nice to have a connection between the blues and "the little red songbook" but the authors don't make mountains out of molehills -- what I mean is, there's n...more
