So, a quartet of heroes banished the Hulk to a planet where he started out as a slave and worked his way up to ruler. Eventually, he found love and got married only to have the space ship blow up, wiping out his new-found people and his wife. Needless to say, the Hulk's pretty annoyed about all of this and returns to Earth to kick some super-hero posterior and take some names.

And that's where World War Hulk begins. And then you spend the next hundred or so pages with the Hulk ba...more

It seems Dr. Strange, Black Bolt, Iron Man, and Mr. Fantastic decided to shoot their good buddy Hulk into space onto a planet called Sakaar for his, and the planet Earth's, own good. Monsters just about as bad as the Hulk inhabit Sakaar. While there, they force the Hulk into slavery and make him a gladiator. However, one thing leads to another and he becomes the leader of the planet. But, some kind of explosion that kills millions of people on Sakaar including the Hulk's new wife and their u...more

Okay, yeah, I get it. After the heady Civil War, Marvel set itself up for a 'Summer Spectacular' type of box-office buster story-line. I would probably have been okay with it, if the idea isn't fraught with constant problems. I really can't blame this book for the bad writing in Ghost Rider, but I also can't praise it for the great writing in Front Line (Damn, that book better become a regular title. Through both story lines, it completely stole the show). What I can blame it for is a compl...more

A significant step down from Greg Pak's stunning science fiction odyssey in Planet Hulk, World War Hulk takes elements of the former story and sets them in conflict with the famous Marvel universe. I should have been an easy story with a dozen earth-shattering battles, yet almost every conflict seems to end too quickly and with neither drama nor accuracy to the abilities of the earthly characters. Even the alien characters seem far more powerful (and often, far more shallow) than they did in Pla...more

Description from Amazon.com:
An epic story of anger unbound! Exiled by a group of Marvel "heroes" to the savage alien planet of Sakaar, the Hulk raged, bled, and conquered through the pages of last year's "Planet Hulk" epic, rising from slave to gladiator to king. Now the Hulk returns to Earth to wreak his terrible vengeance on Iron Man, Reed Richards, Dr. Strange, Black Bolt - and anyone else who gets in the way! Stronger than ever, accompanied by his monstrous Warbound...more

Hulk mad, Hulk smash entire Marvel universe! And I'll be honest, this series was, to me, cool as hell. If it had been in the hands of damn near anyone else, it wouldn't have worked nearly as well, but John Romita Jr. was born to draw the Hulk beat the tar out of people for 5 issues straight. Some of the turns were a little wonky (particularly the big fight with Dr. Strange in #4), but the fight with the Sentry in #5 was mindblowingly amazing. The denouement after that was a little ridiculous, ad...more

Big, bombastic, and crazy like it should be, but honestly it doesn't live up to Planet Hulk. Then again, living up to Planet Hulk would be damn near impossible working within normal Marvel continuity: the beauty of Planet Hulk was that it was so far away it could do whatever it wanted, but when Hulk comes back to Earth, the story becomes a bit restrained by what's allowed. Nonetheless, good stuff. Read it along with the Incredible Hercules book that ties in, though, because more of the emotional...more

When did modern superhero comics stop being fun? And why do modern heroes have to be so unlikeable? I haven't read the Civil War books that preceded World War Hulk yet, so the heroes' moivations and behavior felt underdeveloped inexplicable and to me. The characters brought over from Planet Hulk were similarly flat. I found the story to be lacking and the ending anti-climatic. Overall this book suffers from the same problem a lot of moderm comics do; the storytellers think making comics more "...more

This a pretty good Hulk story, but the ending is a mess. Plus, for a book called World War Hulk, all of the fighting is in New York

Alright. I love my Hulk; love his story. However, I haven't actually read a lot of other Hulk series, so I felt a little bit in the dark as to what happened before this series. There were many references to things that happened before and I was unaware of them.

But enough bitchin'. It wasn't like I was clueless as to what was going on. It was really cool to see the Hulk portrayed as a more intelligent character (which I always seem to favor over the big, angry giant of ooga-boog...more

You kinda have to admire the lack of pretension here, forgoing any attempt at plot in favor of giving you exactly what the title leads you to expect (everyone versus the Hulk, with the Hulk beating the holy hell out of all of 'em). To force an analogy, if Planet Hulk, this storyline's precursor, is sort of like Rocky, in that it's the bit with the actual story, then World War Hulk is like Rocky III, the one with all the entertaining hitting.

As follow up to the events of Planet Hulk, the Hulk and the Warbound arrive on Earth, and Hulk begins enacting his revenge against the Illuminati for sending him to space. The art is good. The story is alright, but as the story progresses it becomes Hulk fight She-Hulk, Huk fights Thing, Hulk fights Sentry, etc. and the last issue could have been spread out into two issues. It would have been nice to have more substance like Planet Hulk.

Read this this week. It starts off very strong, the first three issues of the graphic novel are insane and brutal, leading you to believe that the Hulk is destroying the members of the illuminati one by one, but you find out later he is just smashing them enough to make them his gladiatorial slaves. The last two issues are abrupt and weak compared to the first three, but for not being an avid Hulk reader, I was pretty into this.

After the events of Planet Hulk, the Hulk returns to earth to avenge himself and claim the planet, after Saakar has become uninhabitable. He fights friends, enemies, etc. to work toward his goals, and with the help of his friends, it looks like he might accomplish them. This novel is not quite as good as Planet Hulk, but still very good.

A great follow-up to Planet Hulk. An understanding in vengeance, wrath and choices. A fun read although some feel it was an anticlimatic ending. I loved it. It was good to see some butt-whooping on those that deserved it.

It was fun watching the Hulk beat the hell out of everything - that is worth the rating alone, but otherwise you don't really get much from this on it's own. Pair it with Planet Hulk and it's suddenly a lot more robust.

good, fun story of the hulk kicking ass after the events from Planet Hulk, which was a much more entertaining story. Hulk here basically opens up a can of whup ass on earth's heroes. Read Planet Hulk first.
