Hudson Catalina has given up—having lost both breasts to cancer, she is emotionally and physically exhausted, no longer willing to endure the nausea and crushing weakness of her grueling treatment. Nothing in her life—not even her beloved husband and children, her best friend, or her passion for teaching high school—will sway her decision to terminate her treatment. On the...more

In Belly of the Whale, Linda Merlino does an excellent job of creating a character who feels what every woman, and specifically every mother, imagines she would feel if she had cancer. The struggle to hold on to hope, the fight not to give in to fear and what-ifs. (What if I don't live to see my child's next birthday, let alone her high school graduation?)

For that reason I was able to identify and sympathize with Hudson Catalina. I think this emotional aspect, Merlino's ability to get inside Hud...more

If you are a lover of fine literature, you know that sweet moment of discovery. This is why you read. This is why you open book cover after book cover, anticipating that golden moment. It happens when a newly opened book reaches from the printed page and into your mind, into your heart, and captures cleanly both imagination and resonant emotion. Opening Belly of the Whale, by first-time author, Linda Merlino, is such a golden moment.

I may never have picked this book up in any of my bookstore wa...more

For many mothers, the eve of their daughter’s fifth birthday would be cause for celebration. For Hudson Catalina, it’s anything but.

After a long battle with breast cancer, Hudson is tired. She’s tired of the toxic treatments that leave her sick for days, tired of putting on a brave face for family and friends, tired of imagining her children’s lives without a mother. She has given up all hope of beating the disease that claimed her mother’s life when Hudson was just 14 years old. She decides to...more

Belly of the Whale is an intense story of the power of finding faith and discovering a long forgotten inner strength. It is a story of one woman's battle, her resignation to die, then finding the determination to live.

Linda Merlino does a superb job of bringing her characters to life and allowing the reader to feel each and every emotion through them. Hudson is a young mother and beloved wife who has learned she has cancer. After losing her own mother at a young age to cancer, this has always be...more

I wrote this book, so I am partial to liking it. My intention was to send a message of hope and having faith in the unknown. The main character, Hudson Catalina, has breast cancer. She has given up hope, she is willing to let cancer win the fight. The story takes place in twenty-four hours and relates what happens when we think we know what will be. Life takes us to places and people we never imagined. Hudson is taken hostage in an all-night market by a killer more deadly than her disease.
