Mercy the pig lives with Mr. and Mrs. Watson in their house. Mercy is tucked into bed in his bedroom one night. The Watsons also go to bed. Everyone is sleeping soundly. Leroy Ninker enters the kitchen of the Watson’s house to steal from them. While taking the toaster, he scrapes it along the counter. Mercy wakes up immediately as this sound means someone is making toast with butter, his favorite. Mercy got up and investigated, but found no toast. Disappointed, Mercy went back to sleep on the ki...more

Our library has a service that enables us to read ebooks online. It's a pretty neat service; there's an option for audio narration, and the pictures can be animated. Sentences are displayed and highlighted during audio narration so kids can follow along if they wish to do so. We read Mercy Watson Fights Crime using this service tonight, and had a generally good experience.

My niece and I enjoyed this Mercy Watson installment, although we both decided that I have better voices for the characters...more

Mercy is the spoiled but nice pet pig belonging to the very flakey Mr. and Mrs. Watson. One night their house is robbed by Leroy Ninker, "a small man with a big dream." Leroy wanted to be a cowboy but was currently a not very good thief. While trying to steal the toaster he scrapes it along the counter. Mercy jolts awake, she knows that sound. That's the toaster, that means toast, which means butter! (Buttered toast is Mercy's favorite food.) In her attempt to fi...more

Mercy wakes up one night hearing noises, the srceech of the toaster being moved and the clank of the toaster being pushed down. Someone must be making toast! So off she goes but instead she discovers a tiny little man, Leroy, who wants to be a cowboy but has become a thief instead. Mercy and Leroy end up having fun together in the middle of the night but the neighbours don't agree and the police and firemen are called out to the disturbance. Another cute story but this time we just didn't seem t...more

I enjoyed all of the Mercy Watson series, as did my just turned 7 year old daughter. I liked DiCamillo's witty story and the illustrations that further bring it to life. I highly recommend reading the stories in order as the characters from the earlier books are used throughout the series.

My daughter enjoys reading these books to herself and out loud to me. They fill the gap between traditional early readers and early chapter books. These books are chapters books, however, the vocabulary is not...more

DiCamillo, K. (2006). Mercy Watson Fights Crime. Massachusetts: Candlewick Press.
Gr. K-3. Mercy Watson loves buttered toast. Leroy Ninker is a thief. And Leroy is trying to steal Mercy’s favorite kitchen tool – the toaster! But not if Mercy has anything to say about it…
Curriculum: This is a good beginning reader book, with easy vocabulary and short chapters. The book could also be used to talk about stealing and why it is wrong and how it affects everyone. It could also be used to talk about wha...more

Leroy Ninker is a small man with a big dream: he wants to be a cowboy, but for now he's just a thief. In fact, Leroy is robbing the Watsons' kitchen right this minute! As he drags the toaster across the counter — screeeeeech — and drops it into his bag — clannngggg — little does he know that a certain large pig who loves toast with a great deal of butter is stirring from sleep. Soon this little man is led on a wild and raucous rodeo ride like he's always dreamed of!

Third in the series, Mercy do...more

Mercy is woken in the middle of the night by the sound of the toaster. A thief (who wants to be a cowboy) is in the process of robbing the Watsons. Never fear Mercy comes to the rescue in Mercy fashion. In the ensuing chaos the Lincoln sisters call the police and the Watsons call the fire department. Friends from the first two books appear and capture the cowboy fiend thanks to a pig with a penchant for hot butter toast.

Great for beginning chapter book readers and for reading out loud (my mom an...more

Kate DiCamillo is such a fantastic children's author! The two Mercy Watson books we have read so far have been a delight to read... re-read... and re-re-read to my three and a half year old. It's an early reader series, but the work well read aloud. They are fairly long, with pictures on most but not all pages, which seems to make them a good bridge to the chapter books I hope to introduce soon (Charlotte's Webb and the like).

The silly themes and catch phrases even catch the imagination of my 1...more

The Mercy Watson series by Kate Dicamillo is such a fabulous literacy resource for my students who need a challenge! My above level soaring kindergarten readers have loved getting to experience a "chapter book" for reading homework. I have developed a simple comprehension packet that asks students to respond to 2-3 literal questions from each chapter. This particular story follows sweet Mercy in her hunt for some buttered toast. Instead she accidentally saves her family from something terrible.

Mercy's desire for buttered toast saves the day...er, the night in this story. While Mercy things it's all fun and games but she really has caught a thief and the story only gets more exciting when the police and fire department show up.

Again, a word of caution - they gloss over the thief and don't actually show him going to jail. Be sure to read this yourself and talk about the plot with your child.

We are really enjoying this series!

The usual cast of characters are back at it again for this book. There is much talk of eating butter toast. Mercy is a hero.

A really fun chapter book series that is great for young ones to hear as a read-aloud. The story lines are complex enough to keep parents interested but also easy enough to follow and understand.

This book contains some genuine humor, and is an interesting, very fast read. I liked the little comic asides introduced by Kate DiCamillo, such as Baby Lincoln's pie snack right before bed, the simple-minded but capable policemen and firemen, and the ways that burglar Leroy Ninker's lack of height led to all sorts of zany complications.

Mercy Watson is very funny! The books are quite short, divided into small chapters. They are a little longer than Henry and Mudge--probably comparable in length to Amelia Bedelia. They have very colorful illustrations. Rebecca likes them, and reads them quite quickly when I pick them up from the library, but doesn't beg for more.

This book was good because it was funny. Leroy Ninker rode Mercy because he was robbing the Watson's house and Mercy caught him stealing the toaster. Mercy smelled the butter and she thoughtnthey were making cookies. When Leroy tried to sneak out the door over Mercy, she got up and he ended up riding on her back.
Jennifer
Mercy Watson continues to delight in her third adventure in which she foils a not-so-scary thief. Leroy Ninker really wants to be a cowboy, but until he can realize his cowboy dreams he is a thief. His big mistake when trying to rob the Watsons is stealing the toaster. Mercy overhears and mistakes the sounds of the robbery for toast-making sounds and since there is nothing Mercy loves more than hot buttered toast, she heads to the kitchen to investigate. Extremely silly antics ensue involving th...more

This was the first chapter book I read to my children. I love to read and really try to rub that off on them. As soon as I started reading, my 4 and 5 year old were mesmerized. This Mercy Watson book has adventure, suspense, and a heroic ending. Perfect beginner books for the kiddos!
Tara
Great book! I feel that this book really would capture the attention of all readers. It caught mine! Mercy catches a theif trying to steal their toaster. Mercy can't let that happen because without a toaster you can't have toast. This book was funny and would be great for third grade.

I love this series, and this book in particular, where Mercy's love and nose for toast leads her to stop a bandit from raiding the house. What I love best about these books, characters and story aside, is Chris Van Dusen's illustration. Great light, great perspective. Dude's awesome.

The 3rd installment in the delightful tale of a pig named Mercy who loves toast. Georgia loves these stories and even reads them by herself when we are finished reading aloud together. Highly recommend this book and others in the series for 2nd grade readers.
Vivian
Love, love, love the Mercy Watson books! Adults are going to enjoy these as much as their children. They are the perfect transition from Easy Reader to chapter books -- large print, full color illustrations, and great stories. I recommend them all the time.
Lindsay
Hilarious series that my kids want to read over & over. Great for a starter for chapter books as there aren't too many sentences on a single page and plenty of bright illustrations. Fun/ adventurous story line. I wish there were more of these!

Mercy Watson Fights Crime was filled with simple but great conversational humor. The style is very easy to read - seems like a great intro chapter book.
Chris Van Dusen's illustrations are welcoming, bright, and full of character and motion.

This is a fun book to read, but very silly. It's a chapter book, but there are lots of pictures and the chapters are very short, so it's perfect for beginning readers or for reading aloud to younger children.

I am sad to say I didn't love this one as much as the others. Might have something to do with the 45 minutes discussion I had with my girls about the little boy stealing all of the Watson's stuff.

It's hard to find quality books for the in-between picture books and full chapter books phase. These chapters are just short enough, with just enough pictures, to keep 3yo Rosie interested.

mercy watson wakes up in the middle of the night only to find a robber in the kitchen. she quickly falls asleep right in the robber's path! from that point forward, chaos ensues!
Mandy
Mercy wakes up one night to the sound of the toaster being moved. Was someone making her favorite: buttered toast? When she investigates, she finds a thief in the Watson's home.
Evan
I like it. I liked the part where the fire department and the police came. It was so awesome! I like Mercy because she always does something nice for Mr. and Mrs. Watson.

Kate DiCamillo spent most of her childhood in the South, and moved to Minnesota when she was in her twenties. She was inspired to write Because of Winn-Dixie, her first novel, during a bout of homesickness one brutally cold winter. The book was an immediate success: it is a Newbery Honor Book, has won more than twenty-five state awards, and has been made into a popular family film. Kate DiCamillo’...more
