Rather than review each individual volume of this series, I'll just do an overall here.
I found out about Ito entirely by chance, but immediately fell for his rather distinctly Japanese style of horror. If his art wasn't so evocative and horribly lovely, I probably wouldn't be a fan.
This series is not as strong as Tomie or even the shorts in Flesh Colored Horror (if I remember correctly), but it has the advantage of being of a grander scope, a la Akira. The range of the story from the i...more

Sebuah manga yang mengerikan... suspense thriller! Kirie, seorang gadis cantik, mempunyai seorang pacar yang baik, hidup dalam keluarga kecil yang bahagia, dan tinggal di kota kecil yang tenang. Tetapi mendadak semuanya berubah menjadi aneh... sangat aneh, bahkan terlalu aneh! Dimulai dari si ayah pacarnya yang seakan terhipnotis menatap cangkang spiral seekor siput, seperti virus yang terus menyebar, seluruh kota akhirnya terkena teror kutukan spiral...

The series was really bizarre, I enjoyed reading it. I'm a fan of horror/mystery types of stories, but the ending is often disappointing after all the build-up and strange occurrences.
Unfortunately, I wasn't too thrilled with the way this series ended. There were so many "What the hell?!" moments throughout, but the ending just seemed kind of blah. Maybe I'm just used to big surprises and positive resolutions.

I will never look at escargot the same EVER again!! Yerg!
That said, I do think Shuichi is a cutie... at least before the start of his mental breakdown. Considering what's happened to him throughout the series, it's no real surprise the grasp he had on his sanity started slipping.
Also, I'm surprised Kirie didn't have MASSIVE nightmares after all she'd witnessed! The incident at the hospital? Jack-In-The-Box?!?!? O_o

The resolution to such a complex story was really unexpected but oddly satisfying. This is where the overall conflict peak occurs so this one is the hardest to put down. As dorky as it sounds the ending left me in tears lol

Anybody with any interest in Japanese horror, or horror comics, needs to read this series. The mood is very Lovecraftian, and the art very detailed and terrifying.

I read the first two as well. J-Horror that'll get under your skin--it really creeps me out but I can't put it down.

In this volume, the episodic format is abandoned for one long, creepy finale.

Even though this series freaked me out, I didn't want it to end. 3 volumes was way too short.

So we finally get the answers about the underlying horror that caused all the weird spiral stuff in the first volume and the less spirally grossness in the middle volume, but basically these last chapters turn the story into a Stephen King-like story about the last survivors in a world gone to hell (cf. Cell, The Stand) and then climaxes in this bit of cosmic horrible beauty that makes sense internally but is still kinda ennh.

I admit I was really unimpressed with the ending of this three book/manga series. I think the concept may have been there, but I just didn't get into the main characters after the first book. It was nice to finish up the three book/manga series, but I don't think I'll read more than the first book again. I do have to give it points for just getting creepier with each episode. May be a good read for Halloween.

This trilogy is set in a small town in Japan where a sinister spiral is invading everything and causing people to behave strangely. I have no way of describing this except to say that the artwork is creepy and atmospheric; you're never sure where a spiral is going to appear and wreak havoc with some innocent bystander. Some of the images have definitely stayed with me after reading.

recommends it for:
Horror readers, manga readers
This concludes one of the most bizarre and fascinating horror stories I've ever seen, in prose, sequential art or film. This volume takes us through the destruction of the spiral-infested city, the emergence of something greater from the ruins, and the exploration that takes us to the center of it all. I could not put it down, not when it got absurd, not when it got confusing.

Wow, this series ended completely differently than the movie. I liked this ending better--it felt like one of those nightmares where it just keeps going and gets weirder and weirder. The movie ended while it was still a bit realistic, but the manga kept going until it reached a fever pitch of strangeness, and the conclusion actually made sense!

The final book in the trilogy of greatest nonsence horror ever, and it end's like a genius in the most amazing way. Most people I talk to seem to hate the ending, and there's no way i'd spoil it for you. Well....That means I can't really talk about it. Read it and make your own mind up.

Absolutely delicious. This was my first Ito Junji series, and I'm in love with his grotesqueness.
