Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived with an old man and woman and their five dogs in a house in the forest. Deep in the forest lived goblins called the Hobyahs. The faithful dogs kept the Hobyahs away, but their barking kept the old man awake, and he chased them off. Now there was no one to protect the people from the Hobyahs.

Good read-aloud, scarier for 1st graders than 2nd graders. Whispering in the right places, and using raspy Hobyah voices help maintain the tone. (The dogs' names annoy me, but that's a personal preference.)
