1.5 to 2.0 stars. My review of the first volume of this series is pretty apropos here as well. Not horrible, but basically unnecessary title cashing in on the success of the Mutant titles during this period. B list (or C list) heroes, villians and story-lines.
A pretty eclectic collection. The bulk of this volume has the New Mutants heading into Brazil's unexplored rainforest, where they discover a Roman civilization that's apparently been kicking around there for 2,000 years now. Our young heroes find become entangled up in the city's complex politics--and secret death cult--even as they struggle to master their powers and deal with your typical teenage troubles.

It's hard to respond to the story rationally, although it works well enough for a "drag a

Though at times these early New Mutants issues tend to dwell too much on the fact these new students are young teenagers, Claremont rarely delves too often or deeply into typical youthful shenanigans that would destroy anyone's desire to read about them in a comic book. He does a good job of balancing their youth with their desires to grow as mutants and as young adults, especially with the thoroughly tragic character Illyana Rasputin/Magik. Her story is one of the darkest in the X-Universe (at ...more
Our team of New Mutants spend a lot of time away from school in this volume. Starting off is the lost civilization story that introduced a lost colony from ancient Rome in the mountainous origins of the Amazon River. But the voulume ends with the team getting kidnapped/captured by the evil White Queen, Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club and her band trainees the Hellions. New team members Magma and Magik come aboard and guest appearances by Kitty Pryde and Professor X help round out this fun-filled ...more
Nova Roma/Magma, Magik, and Hellions. Chris Claremont writing and Sal Buscema penciling.

So far Magma isn't especially interesting. Selene makes for a good poorly motivated evil character.

I've always like the little I've read of Magik, so anything more I read of her I tend to like.

The Hellions felt a little forced; forced as in trying too hard to dopplegang the New Mutants. It is kinda interesting to see the Hellfire Club get fleshed out a little more, even if it is a tad uninspired. It always s
Not a series which at this point shows immense gravitas. That said, I'm enjoying reading it in small doses. Yeah, they find an ancient Roman Civilization and have an adventure reminiscent of Dr.Who! Wooohoooo yeah that was actually the fun bit... other than that it's slugging it off with other mutant teams and Ilyana Rasputin still whingeing about her 7 years in limbo. Yeah, we get it now... there was a whole boring miniseries devoted to that one!

Nueva Roma, Magma, Selene, Magik, Doug Ramsey, los Infernales... Chris Claremont va tejiendo poco a poco el tapiz que conformará la mejor serie de mutantes de la historia. Genial revisitarlos después de tantos años.

Good characters, great characterization, well-paced plots. Generally, Claremont at his best (well, except all of the other volumes of New Mutants Classic which are better).

I still don't understand the near-fanatic appeal of Chris Claremont.
Every story-arc of his that I have read has been OK -- but nothing more than OK.
