Secondhand Smoke
She's nasty, she's prejudiced, and she's finally killed her husband (or at least, that's what her kids believe). She may be the most obnoxious woman in all of New Orleans. But by the end of this remarkable novel, readers will also find Jerusha Bailey infuriatingly lovable-a hilarious antiheroine who "takes life's hardest punches and survives" (Larry Baker, author...more

"The Friedmann comic voice is filled with so much anger, outrage, astonishment, fear, resentment, and unleashed id that we readers nearly fall out of our chairs in wonder and laughter and shock. It's as if her characters have had to live in and accept a deranged world for so long that their only means of survival is to become even crazier and wilder than anything that comes their way." -- William Caverlee
Jerusha is one of the most unsympathetic main characters you could ever wish not to meet. After the first few pages, you're hooked, fascinated by these characters and their complex relationships.
The story builds via three first person narratives - Jerusha and her two adult children. The humour is very dark but the story is ultimately very satisfying.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit - Jerusha Bailey was a very funny character and this book had several laugh-out-loud-funny parts. All in all, it made for an amusing read and I'm glad it had a good ending.
Got this for a buck at a Borders outlet. Quick and quirky. Was fairly entertaining for a holiday break read, but a bit odd so not sure who, if anyone I'd recommend it to.
This is MY best book. No shame.
I have no idea why Patty Friedmann isn't the world's most famous author. Her books are magnificent.
