I know in my review of the omnibus of the first 3 volumes that I said I had some issues with the whole lolita genre part of this series...Yeah, still having issues with that. Still pause a moment when the age of the main characters is mentioned. But OMG! The story on this one, sooo draws me in. I can't help it. And I LOVE the artwork! The detailed work is fantastic. Especially the backgrounds. It's detailed without being cluttered. Even the simpler pieces. (I'm not saying every single frame is perfect, but the majority are really good)

Storywise I liked this volume a lot. It delved more into the psychological aspects of Sumire and Lucia's relationship. They both have some pretty big baggage that they are carrying around and it leads them both to feel they are the cause of the strain on their friendship. Plus I got to find out more about the enemy they face. The group is being led by Sonoka, a very normal and pretty looking woman, who obviously has something hidden up her sleeve to keep Layla, Ruka and Guy in line.

Also I've had a really creeped out feeling when it came to Yoshiki. I mean what is some guy doing hanging out in a kiddie playground? And finally my suspicions are going to be validated! OK. well they weren't completely validated in this volume. He didn't transform into a melting virus thing and try to eat Sumire. But he was doing some really SNEAKY stuff!! I could be completely wrong. He could just be a really nice, if odd guy, I've been proven wrong by authors before. But I don't think I'm wrong, and I can't wait to see where it leads!!

I got pampered by the omnibus. I really enjoyed not having to wait to see what happened. *sigh*

While there was a bit more cuteness in this one. (Lola brought a lot of it, especially with her chocolate addiction) the over all tone of the story is still a bit dark. (It is GOTH-lolita) But the story is strong and the characters have a lot of history I can't wait to find out about! I definitely recommend jumping into this series.

She calls the thing a virus, which is apparently a type of demon that feeds on those with the "vision" (like Sumire), turning them into viruses as well. Lucia also runs a store called Venus Vanguard that sells gothic lolita clothing as a front for her virus hunting. Did I mention she wears an eye-patch and wields a gun? I'm thinking of cross-playing her.

I first heard about Venus Versus Virus a few months ago, and was eagerly awaiting its release. The series is by Atsushi Suzumi, and it began as a one-shot submitted for a contest the manga anthology Dengenki Dao was running with the theme gothic lolita. Unfortunately, when the first volume came out in the US two weeks ago, I couldn't find a copy. Then I went to Comic Con and went to the Seven Seas booth (they publish the book), got the manga, read it, and loved it as much as I hoped I would.

I absolutely adore Lucia, and Sumire quickly grew on me. She starts the series out being quite timid, but things start developing quickly after Lucia saves Sumire from the virus. Lucia gives Sumire a flyer for her store, and says she's charging her for the rescue. Of course, it turns out she will let Sumire work off the debt by acting as bait for more viruses (it seems like a lot of manga characters end up working off debts, and the jobs inevitably lead to hijinks and adventure. hrm...). It's during the next virus attack that we learn Sumire has virus hunting powers as well, and the pair begin to live and work together. They also seem to develop the hints of a relationship (nothing is explicit, but there seem to be Yuri undertones).

Volume 1 of the manga is out now, and volume 2 comes out in October. I highly recommend it.
