From an e-mail to a friend:
I picked up a book at the library today called Ghosts Among Us by James "I'm In Your Living Room!" Van Praagh.
For some reason, he advises the Dear Reader to consider such mediation tricks as The Cloak of Invisibility and the Rays of Pink Light.
Because, of course, some ghosts are bad. Very bad. And they are easily dissuaded by you chanting, "I'm enveloped in pink light!" to yourself whilst the walls drip blood, the li...more

People who know me find it impossible that I hadn't heard about James Van Praagh prior to picking up this book. So, I read the book without any preconceived notions or opinions about him.
Does he *really* recall paranormal events..in detail..that happened when he was just 2 years old? I found myself rolling my eyes many times (I am a very firm believer in the afterlife & have had experiences as far back as I can remember. THREE years of age. lol). Much of what I read I felt was ...more

A quick and enjoyable read (if you are interested in this sort of thing, of course). It's not so much whether I believe everything he has to say about the after-life -- it's more that I like to see a view of life from a perspective that is so unique. I don't doubt Van Praagh's abilities (my own life experience makes this possible for me). Also, personally, I believe life continues. It does make me think -- just as each of us percieve this life in our own particular way, so each of us will se...more

I have a lot of respect for James Van Praagh. His other books offer wonderful meditations, insight into the paranormal and postive messages of love and hope. But this book just grated on me. First of all he tells you that ghosts aren't his expertise. He sees them, yes, but they give him the heebie-jeebies. As a medium, he's more into spirits that have "passed over" whereas ghosts tend to be 'earthbound'--stuck here due to some kind of negative energy field-- and boy did he ever ha...more

This book is a pastiche of ghost "theory," personal anecdotes, ghost hunting how-to's, and self help. I thought that the combination of those things might drive me a little bonkers but as I reflect on the book, I realize how much I enjoyed it.
Van Praagh can be slightly eccentric but he is also very practical about the afterlife. Okay so he believes that he has had otherworldly connections to both Anne Frank and Abraham Lincoln. Why not? You don't have to buy that to buy in...more

Skeptics need not apply.
Ghosts Among Us was the first book in a very long time that I was sorry to see end. James Van Praagh is a medium responsible for producing such well-known shows as Ghost Whisperer. From dust jacket:
"Everyone loves a good ghost story. Perhaps the human fascination with the supernatural stems from the fact that most of us, at some point in our lives, have experienced something we couldn't quite explain. From a very young age James Van Praagh was aware of a dimension that most of us cannot see, and he has dedicated his life to explaining it to the rest of us. I have never watched the author's show "The Ghost Whisper", but I recall enjoying his earlier book: "Talking To Heaven", when it came out in 1997.
I waited several months to get this book from the library, as the holds list was rather lengthy, but finally it got to read it.
There were parts of this book that I really really loved, and parts that I was uninterested in, such as when the author talks about other galaxies etc. Parts of this book were very comforti...more

Most of my friends are going to look at me strange for reading this book and giving it a good review.
I first heard about this book one afternoon, stuck in the house, and watching Dr. Phil. Of course, Dr. Phil remains the skeptic, but I'm the sucker. That being said - I didn't seek out the book, but Wednesday I was in the library where I noticed it in the new books section. I ended up sitting down in the reading area and reading half of the book there. At that point, I had already...more

James Van Praagh is the brains behind the TV show "Ghost Whisperer" on CBS, although that is about one of his friends and not himself. To give himself credibility, he tells how he learned he was a medium, he started seminary high school, but then inexplicably leaves the school and becomes a lapsed Catholic and ultimately a full time medium (although we don't learn why or when any of this occurred). Then he tries to tell the reader all about ghosts, which is supposedly the main topic ...more

Van Praagh, the New York Times bestselling author and co-executive producer of the CBS series The Ghost Whisperer, shares his knowledge and life experience about ghosts, a subject that can seem to many of us both bizarre and terrifying. But when the world beyond is explained fully by an experienced guide, dismissal and apprehension can be turned into knowledge and inspiration. With incredible true ghost stories and surprising details about how ghosts actively participate in our lives, Van Praagh...more

Are you kidding me?! James Van Praagh couldn't be more full of himself. How disappointing that he thinks we're all idiots. Why does he see your ghost only after you've told him your sad story? Why does he see mostly famous people like Lincoln and Roy Orbison? Give me a break!

I've been really interested in ghosts lately. this one was pretty spiritual, kinda hippyish but good. quick, easy read. interesting. good "energy" exercises to keep the stress back and stay positive.

Picked this up for Wifey but ended up reading it myself as well. Boo!
Book might have seemed funny if it weren't for those footsteps we hear in our old house, late at night...serious.

This book was good. Some of the stuff was hard to believe. Kind of like "The Other Side" written by Browne, Sylvia. Although this one was more easier to believe than the one by Sylvia Browne.

It's alright. Some of the stories he tells about encounters with ghosts are very interesting, but overall, you have to judge for yourself whether or not you believe in what he is saying.

Extraordinary gifts! I like James' writing style. Its down-to-earth, as well as revealing--a world most of us cannot access!

You have to be open to the spirit world to want to read this book. We are forced to look beyond what is in front of us.

I thought this book was facinating. I suppose you can read it two ways though. You can think he is full of S*@%. If that's the case you probably won't enjoy this book at all. The other option is to suspend skepticism and just go with it. Even if you cannot embrace the concept of someone who "sees dead people" there are a lot of interesting things about postive and negative energy among the living and how we can physically and emotionally affect eachother with the energy we put out ther...more
