Emily Graham, a successful defense attorney and recently rich, decides to buy an old Victorian home at the New Jersey resort seaside of Spring Lake, that once belonged to her great, great grandmother. Emily has also accepted a job with Todd, Scanlon, Klein and Todd, a nationally known criminal defense law firm in Manhattan. After closing on the house, and trying to establish her life in the new area, Emily receives threats on her life, which she believes are from the stalker that she put in j...more

This was the perfect good ole-fashioned whodunnit to read while being wrapped up in the front of the fire poorly. I am pretty new to Mary Higgins Clark but I now know that she can be completely and utterly relied on for comfort reading.
Emily Graham moves in to her ansestoral home in Spring Lake, NJ knowing that over 100 years ago a family member was murdered in that very town. In the following years, two more of her ancestors friends were also murdered and the town now appears to hav...more

This is the second book by MHC that I've read and I liked this much better than "A Cry in the Night". This book was much more suspenseful and I liked that it kept you guessing until the end as to who the bad guy was. I'll try some more of her books but so far, there's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I don't know if it's because of the large volume of books that she writes in a relatively short amount of time that causes the quality deficiancy or what. But there i...more

IT took me a little longer than usual to really get into this book. Ususally I'm hooked within the first chapter or two. This time it took my about 100 pages or so. It was still good. Once again the bad person was not who I thought. The basic idea of the story is - the Main character has just moved into an old victorian house and she finds out she has a stalker. At the same time there is a string of murders that are going on around her that seems to be copycats of ones that happened in her neigh...more
"In the 1890s, three young women in the upscale seaside village of Spring Lake died at the hands of an unidentified killer. In the present day, two young women have disappeared from town and their killer, whose first-person ruminations vein the third-person narrative, is preparing to strike again. His final target will be Emily Graham, an ambitious young attorney just moved to Spring Lake from upstate New York, where she'd been victimized by a stalker. Emily is a typical Clark heroine, brig...more

I was in the mood for something different so I thought I would try a Mary Higgins Clark Book. I haven't read her in a loooong time. I really enjoyed her older books like "Where are the Children?" but I found this one to just be ok. I couldn't believe how stupid the heroine was to insist on stayin home alone when she knew a killer was going to strike shortly. I wasn't overly surprised by who the killer was either. Nice change from what I had been reading but not a riveting read.

Emily Graham, a criminal defense attorney who made millions in the dot-com boom buys an old house in Spring Lake that once belonged to her family. When the murders start, they have a connection to serial killings committed 100 years prior in the same town. Emily tries to piece together the connections. This was the winter version of a beach read - easy to get into, fast-paced, entertaining and kept me guessing about the bad guy till the end. The narrator did a good job distinguishing the many vo...more

I thought this book was mediocre at best, just your average whodunit. The story was interesting, but I was able to figure out whodunit. Therefore, I was a bit disappointed. I like to be shocked and surprised. This was my first Mary Higgins Clark read. I wasn't too impressed. If all of her books are as predictable as this one was, then I fail to understand why she is so popular!

I like this author because she always leaves you guessing till the very end but what I really enjoyed about this one is that it's set in one of my favorite East Coast towns, Spring Lake, NJ. It was so fun to read about the very streets I've strolled along and the breakfast diners I've frequented with my husband (pre-kids) with a multiple-murder mystery thrown into the mix.

This mystery is about a young attorney who comes into a large amount of money and decides to move to a small town and purchase her family's old Vicorian home. When a body is found in her backyard while excavating for a swimming pool, it is discovered that there is a serial killer on the loose. The twist is that the serial killer is reinacting murders that were commited 110 years previously.

This was the perfect vacation mystery read!! LOVED it. It also was fun since it takes place in New Jersey and that's where we spent part of our vacation. :) I like how MHC keeps throwing you out ideas as to what is going on, but so many people look suspicious you'll be fairly surprised at the end.

I haven't read one of her books before but a friend gave me a large stack of them. This one had some holes in the plot, which I thought came from the author trying to make it more scary rather than worrying about some of the details. The storyline was interesting though and kept me hooked.

This was the first book I read from May Higgin's Clark so I like this one. I like how it was a murder mystery between the past and present so that was kind fun. If you have read more than 3 of Mary Higgins Clark's books than you can figure out who the killer is but if you haven't I recommend this one. (Her very first book is amazing 'Where are the Children'.. and it's not like any of her other books..)

Not too bad, it had plenty of suspense and false leads to keep you guessing, but it was an easy read and didn't require much brain power. Not what I would consider a great work of fiction, but a fun read to keep you entertained.

While Jenn was teaching a unit on mystery novels to her 7th graders last year I checked this book out on CD mostly because I'd heard of Mary Higgins Clark but had never read any of her novels. I was not at all disappointed in this book, and I think Clark justly has a good reputation. Almost every character in the book had a motive to commit the murder, and I was very drawn into the plot's twists and turns. By the end of the book I was completely engrossed in the mystery, and was sufficiently sur...more

Typical Clark....I read this on my lunch hour. It was a fast, suspenceful read. Clark threw out enough red herrings and false leads that you did not know who the murderer was until the very end. While not a book that lead you to new insights or to ponder what you had read, it was a good book if you wanted something fun and fast. As a friend would call it...this book was mental salted peanuts. Not great literature but fun and light.

I got a kick out of the familiar (to me) places in this novel such as Albany NY and the Jersey Shore. The book was a bit dry overall, although at times it was suspenseful.
