Overheated send-up of Quentin Tarantino & the Hollywood subculture that spawned him. Imagine if the 2 main characters from Natural Born Killers took QT hostage in his house in the hollywood hills on the night he won his Oscar. It sounds more promising than it plays out.Not nearly enough swipes at such deserving targets for my taste. Lukewarm crap, actually. Why hold back?

Picked this up on holiday as I finished the book I took away with me. I had never read any Ben Elton and thought I would give him a try. I have mixed feeling and about this book. For the first time in my life I read a book from cover to cover in a week. I could not put it down and took it everywhere we went on holiday so I could sneak a page or tow at every opportunity. However the storyline was un pleasant and struck some kind of nerve with me. The book proclaims to be “laugh out loud funnyâ€...more

recommends it for: Ben Elton fans.
Plot Summary:
Satire of an American / Pop Idol type show from auditions to the final show. As a result of a bet, the show's Svengali (who bears more than a passing resemblance to Simon Cowell) agrees to try to engineer a win for none other than the Prince of Wales.

The characters representing Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh (from the UK X Factor show) are thinly veiled and all the more amusing for it. All the other characters in the book are over-exaggerated, stereo...more

Popcorn (1996) van Ben Elton (Thin Blue Line, Blackadder, The Young Ones, etc).

Another classic Ben Elton story. He has such a canny knack of picking a topic of the time and writing a hard hitting story around it. This one was about personal responsibility and the lack of it in Western society. In a way it's a bit sad that this book is 12 years old and you would hope that if Mr Elton was just being populist and using the moment then the moment will have gone, but alas this book still resonates with me.
Very funny in places, shocking in others and as normal a good read...more

I gave it two stars because it is a quick, easy read and somewhat amusing, but not one I'd highly recommend. On a side note, I was mildly annoyed with some British spellings and expressions considering the main characters are all American and living in L.A.

This is a hilarious story of a Quentin Tarantino-esque Hollywood director, and what happens when he comes in contact with thugs who are worse than his own characters. Excellent!

I have the hardcover edition of this book, which is fantastic. One of the most brilliant pieces of satire/irony/social commentary I have ever read.

The best send-up of Hollywood I've yet read. Elton is a true comic; he wrote the Blackadder series for the BBC.

Normally love Ben Elton books, but this one started to bore me a little half way through, found I was skim reading the second half of the book.

This book was made into a (short-lived?) play in the West End -- I saw the premiere in London in 1997 and went back a few more times before it closed. It is a dark comedy - Elton's commentary on super-violent/Pulp Fiction-esque films - where two murderers try to find someone else to take responsibility for their actions. It is a quick book to read, and I found it very thought-provoking without being too preachy. As I read the book, I remembered that several of the British actors in the London...more

Like all of Ben Elton's books, this makes you think as well as laugh.

From the Back Cover
Bruce shoots movies. Wayne and Scout shoot to kill. In a single night they find out the hard way what's real and what's not, who's the hero and who's the villain. The USA watches slack-jawed as Bruce and Wayne together resolve some serious questions. How is it possible to get shot dead live? Does art imitate life or does life simply imitate bad art? And why, if murder is acceptable on prime-...more

Did not care for this book at all. Would not suggest it to anyone. Violent and vulgar. Also I had a hard time even following what was happening until halfway through the book.

It's interesting because it talks about how film violence affects people. It's discussion on the topic put into the form of a story.

It's not great because it feels a bit forced and could be made more convincing.

I think he's getting better with making discussions on issues more convincing as he writes more of them. Inconceivable and High Society were better in that respect.

This was mildly amusing, not as good as some of his other works, the theme has dated a bit - I reckon it would have been much funnier if I'd read it shortly after Tarantino movies became big. However, it is a clever satire on modern day hollywood, films and violence, and if you're in the mood for a quick easy read, it fits the bill.

Just crap. This is the first book I chose based on its cover alone (big mistake. thanks, cliche.) and was inevitably disappointed. A wanna-be crime novel along the lines of Natural Born Killers, though the British Elton tries waaaaayyyy too hard on threatening-yet-cheeky dialogue for the American killers. It's bad. Just bad.
