When a bedraggled young lady shows up at the castle, only the queen will be able to determine if she’s really the princess she claims to be. Impeccable manners, irresistible charm, and stunning good looks do all point to princess. But only a tiny green pea hidden under a dozen down mattresses can prove whether the girl is royal—or regular.

I think The Princess and the Pea has always been my favorite fairy tale, and Lauren Child has carved out an even deeper place in my heart for this age old story! I fell in love with her style in The Story book Wolves and I still can't wait to read whatever she does. There is something so comforting and yet primitive about fairy tales, and her renderings add another layer to the mystique. This is such a romantic story when all is said and done. There's a prince who wants a girl who's "mo...more

Lauren Child's adaptation of the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson is mostly faithful to the original. The text is cleverly typeset, and includes some humorous asides that are fun to read aloud in a sarcastic tone. Take, for example, this line describing the prince: "Not only was he romantic but also a little dramatic." The story also draws attention to the qualities of a "real princess," and they're at least better than what current princess marketing implies. Th...more

Recommends it for: Fairy-Tale Lovers / Lauren Child Fans
Hans Christian Andersen's brief fairy-tale, The Princess and the Pea, is significantly expanded in this retelling by Lauren Child, author of the popular Charlie and Lola books. The bare-bones narrative is fleshed out, as the romantic young Prince longs for a girl who is "more mesmerizing than the moon...more fascinating than all the stars in the sky," with a "certain... something about her." His parents, on the other hand, are determined that he marry a REAL princess, so when...more

Recommends it for: lovers of paper dolls, dollhouse furniture and artistic talent
I love dollhouse furniture, I love paper dolls, I love creativity and so it's little wonder that I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! Lauren Child has created a splendid world for the Princess and Cast to inhabit and oh what fun it is! You see, the people are all paper cutouts with the most splendid fabrics and the most amusing expressions and such lively poses. They inhabit a very three-dimensional world, however, and this is formed chiefly with dollhouse furniture, from beds and chairs to teeny-tiny books t...more

I am planning my 6 year-old's birthday party and she wants the "Princess and the Pea" theme. We got the family fun magazine and it has a darling cake to go with the story. I am starting to look for the perfect book to read to the girls at the party. My neighbor loaned me this one to try.

I haven't read a version of this story in a LONG time, but this one isn't my favorite retelling of it. Mostly, because it is a bit vague on the purpose of putting the pea under the matres...more

This stays pretty true to the classic fairy-tale of the "Princess and the Pea" though there are some slight differences.

The prince must marry a princess, (happily, he'd much rather marry for love). But, he does insist that if he must marry a princess she must be a TRUE princess. As the book unfolds we learn the details of what makes a true princess: good manners, kindness (I think beauty, but it's not made out to be THE main characteristic). What I liked, was that it was n...more

Lauren Child, the author and creator of Lola and Charlie, is brilliant. This book is beautiful, creative, and unique. What a treat as a parent to feast on such amazing talent while enjoying it with your kids. A great book to add to any library!

Wow, when Lauren Child nails it, she really gets it right. Here she brings us a modern, slightly updated version of Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale. The writing is with her characteristic style and flair. The illustrations are fantastic. I really enjoyed the information inside the back cover telling us how they were made. Lauren used cornflake boxes and picture board to construct the paneled rooms of the palace. The characters are cut out drawing then dressed in layers of paper, like a fu...more

While Lauren keeps the basic story line the same, her embellishments on the plot and the dialogue that goes with it is quite unique. She makes an old fairy tale come to life again with fresh new verbiage that is just a bit towards the sarcastic side of funny. (Which means that the adults reading the book will laugh hysterically and want to keep reading - always a plus for bedtime material!)

This was a fun re-telling of The Princess and the Pea. The story is told in slightly more modern language and with different sized fonts (some bold and some italic). The illustrations were pictures of a dollhouse with paper dolls for the people in the story. This was a really curious effect. I enjoyed it a lot. The only thing I didn't like about the unique illustrations were the eyes of the people which mostly looked angry.

My daughter recommended this book for me.

This is an interesting version of the Princess and the Pea story. I realized when I read "The Princess and the Pizza" that our girls had no reference for this story, so I wanted them to hear this tale. The whole time that I was reading this story, I kept looking at the drawings of the people and thinking how much they look like "Charlie and Lola," not realizing that of course, this author created them as well. The dollhouse-like pictures with the paper doll cutouts were in...more

Ok, some people, of all ages, are going to absolutely love this and want to own it.

I was charmed enough to be glad I ordered it from ILL. Michelle Kratt's review says best what I wish I could articulate about what makes this version of the story itself wondrous, about what kind of person is a 'real princess.' The doll-house furniture and the paper dolls are fun and would have inspired pre-teen me to better efforts (I made a lot of my dolls' furniture and other accessories).

I bought this book for my 3 year old for Christmas hoping that she would love it although it is a bit longer than the books she is used to. We are huge fans of Lauren Child's Charlie and Lola so I was hoping that this would become a favorite also. We love it!! The art and illustrations are magical and the words are whimsical. We even recognized some of the background patterns from her Charlie and Lola movies! It is already a favorite!

The Princess and the Pea By: Lauren Child, ISBN 0786838868, 2006. A Prince long ago was looking for a mesmerizing and fascinating Princess but could not find one. Then in the middle of the night a real Princess was out for a walk when she was caught in a terrible thunderstorm. She was happy to come upon the Prince’s castle, where the King & Queen warmed the Princess. They wanted to test to see if she was a real Princess so they made a bed suited for a real Princess with 12 mattresses and a ...more

Oh, I just loved this version of The Princess and the Pea. As soon as I started reading, I found myself listening as though I was reading aloud; this book begs to be read aloud, and it would make a terrific story time book. It’s one that can be enjoyed equally well by children and adults.

The way the tale is told is very funny, but it also takes the story seriously. The illustrations are really amazing and a lot of fun to pour over multiple times.

My only suggestion is not ...more

I really enjoyed this book. It was the traditional princess and the pea story, but the way the text and illustrations were put together was really neat. the text had a variety of fonts which made it interesting to look at and read. The illustrations were pictures of real objects and the characters were like paper dolls. It made it seem a little more realistic.

Oh man, I can't get enough of Lauren Child! Her books are so full of gorgeous details and I feel like I can spend hours gazing at the illustrations. I would have died for these books when I was little, and I maybe haven't evolved much since then. I'm still a sucker for fairy tales and pink and princesses - I just have a better appreciation for the art of the pictures.

I first read this book when it first came out. I loved it then and just picked it up again when I saw that Lauren had just done an edition of Pippi Longstocking. I don't know the month that it was originally released so decided to put this second reading as my date that I read the book.

This story is well told and the pictures are really interesting and detailed. There is a section in the back of the book that shows how they made the backdrops. It is a very long story, but has a great vocabulary and is engaging throughout. Very funny.

Probably best for a four or five year old girl, but this is such a nice anecdote to the Disney princesses. Fantastic whimsical illustrations that are part photo, part collage. The message about "real princesses" and how they behave is great too.

The illustrations are photographs of illustrated characters in settings made of doll furniture and the like. As a little girl I know I would have spent hours looking at this book and wishing for all the miniature furnishings and such.

The Princess and the Pea is a very interesting book. It has really, really, really, really awesome illustrations. I did not know that princesses do not like peas. Did you know a real princess never checks her mail?

I've read this one to my 4-year-old a few times and we enjoyed it. (Of course--It's a princess book!) The pictures are really fun and unique and, for adults, the story has fun little twists and humor.

My favorite of all Lauren Child's books. Quite shockingly, NOT mentioned in "1001 Children's Books" not even as a footnote to the Child book that is listed (a Charlie and Lola book)

I'm always a sucker for mixed media. I also enjoy the way this book tweaks the princess story in a slightly sardonic manner, while still managing the happy ending.

The story is simple and lovely and the illustrations (which are photographs of miniatures which Child constructed) are incredible. This is on my to-buy list.
