The third installment of the Sally Lockhart mysteries series is even more complex than the other two entries. It is also, unfortunately, a little too obvious, as I figured out the identity of the mysterious villain way before Sally did. And if I figured it out, everyone figured it out.
No matter, though, because Pullman still spins a decent yarn. It's about 2 years since we last saw Sally, and she is now raising Harriet, the daughter she conceived with Frederick right before he die More...

This is the 3rd in the series that I've read. I liked the first two quite a bit, but I found this one very hard to get through. I think it's because the story is short on charm and long on political viewpoint. That's not what I was looking for in a YA novel. I also found some of the aspects of the bad guys pretty nauseating. I forced myself to finish it because I knew that once I put it down I'd never pick it up again. Too bad - Pullman had a good series going.

This is the longest and most intricate of the books. There are several things going on: Sally's persecution by a mysterious man, persecution of Jews emigrating from Russia and other eastern European countries into England, and the struggle of Socialists in Victorian England. These three books create a path of knowledge for Sally Lockhart. In the first, she is forced to fight for herself. In the second, she learns independence (both economic and personal.) She also becomes aware that evil is

I think this is my favorite in the Sally Lockhart series so far, I can't say enough about how wonderful Anton Lesser is as the reader.
He's amazing and his voices add so much to the story as a whole that once I started with the first audio book 'The Ruby in the Smoke' I no longer considered reading the books, it just wouldn't be the same.

This book was a bit different from the first two Sally Lockhart books. Fred and Jim are absent from this one (for the most part). I missed them. Their presence gave a certain light heartedness and humor to the books that is lacking here. It is a much more intense and desperate situation and had me on edge for most of the book.

I didn't find this book as entertaining as the first in the series ("Ruby in the Smoke"), but that was probably intentional: it merits five stars anyhow for scaring the living daylights out of me. And I read it as an adult.
Sally Lockheart's spent the previous 2 books coming right up against the Victorian societal restrictions on women. She's managed to get away with it, too, achieving most of her goals without incurring much damage. But in this book, society whips around More...

It took me a while to get to the last Sally Lockhart book. When I read The Shadow in the North the ending was just SO SAD it knocked the wind out of me. I couldn't bring myself to read the third book until last week.
I really enjoyed The Tiger in the Well. I love all the characters in these books, and Pullman's storytelling and plot is impeccable. Everything constantly moves quickly, and I was always on the edge of my seat. This was the longest of the books, but I think it took me t More...

I'm actually not much of a mystery reader - but I loved this series. As with all of Pullman's books these stories are so much more than what they appear to be on the surface (Industrial Revolution mysteries with a plucky heroine). Each book tackles a different issue of the time, and Sally Lockhart might be my new favorite female character for younger readers.
Also, I listened to these books because I had enjoyed the audio version of the Golden Compass series so much and have to say More...

The third and, so far (I've one more to go), best of the Sally Lockhart books.
The story incorporates the rise of socialist organisations, Russian Jews fleeing the pogroms of 1881, and issues of class identity, yet it's not in the least dry or academic. All the sociological and historical elements are vividly brought to life and seamlessly integrated into the narrative. Plus it's a more emotionally involving adventure this time as Sally goes on the run with her toddler daughter in the breat More...

I read it hoping for some redemption after the debacle which was Book the Second. I think I felt so betrayed by Pullman that I couldn't fairly assess this book on its own merits. I'm still mad at him.

WOW. Well, I don't think there could be much more plot stuffed into this book, and as things revved up, listening in only 15-25-minute bursts was more and more an exercise in frustration.
I downloaded this after having watched the BBC movies of the first two books--the second engrossed me enough that I wanted to know what happened to Sally next. I was amazed at how much more detail was packed in here--I can't imagine turning it into a two-hour movie. Pullman obviously loves the time More...

I love Sally Lockheart and blew through all these books when I was younger but Tiger in the Well is a bit different than the first two. It was Ok but not fantastic. The plot and mystery and Pullman contributing his own political ideas into the series keeps this one likable and interesting but it just feels like it's missing some of the charisma of the first two books possibly because it takes place so long after them.

Of the three books from this series I have read so far this is definitely my favourite. While some bits explaining the uses of Victorian England sound really "didactic" and are obviously aimed at a very young audience, the main plot is a compelling account of the type of ordeals unconventional and independent women could be subject to in those times. The feelings and thoughts of the main character as she is persecuted by both personal enemies and by the opinion of the public are render

Okay if i saw this book on the bookshelf i probably wouldnt have picked it up... it just doesnt look like the sort of book that i would read. But alas because of my english teacher, i found myself having to read this book.
But! I enjoyed it! i mean it could have been worse. I struggled through the first 'book' (in the book) and had to forse myself for a week to read it but as soon as it hit the second 'book', i just kept reading until i finished. yes it was a great book and the story was c More...

This third installment and it is the best so far, but also the most harrowing to read – Harriet (Sally’s daughter) is of a similar age to my son, and someone is trying to take her away from her mother, so it’s a terrifying thought for a mother reading this book! I actually had nightmares because of it. However, it did not deter me from continuing with the novel. It also focuses on subjects of socialism, equality of the sexes (or lack thereof) and persecution of minorities and immigrants, so it’s

Set about three years after The Shadow in the North, the third in the Sally Lockhart mysteries sees Sally a single mother in Victorian England following the death of Fred and working in partnership with Fred and Rosa’s extended family.
It has a bizarre yet simple premise. Sally’s husband wants a divorce, her complete estate and sole custody of their child. But Sally didn’t marry and the father of Harriet (her daughter) died in a fire. Somebody wants to take everything that Sally has and More...

Philip Pullman creates a strong storyline, pulling in myths and facts about Victorian England in a compelling manner. The ideas he deals with - societies unrest, immigration, socialism and capitalism, are all themes which resonate strongly today. Highly recommended for the more intelligent teenager, and for adults of any age who like to think when they read. The paragraph in which Sally defines how she now sees evil is a superb piece of writing, and instantly lifts this book into classic statu

The Tiger In The Well brings the Sally Lockhart Quartet into a new light. Sally is in her mid twenties now and because of this Pullman is able to take the storytelling up a notch, assuming the readers will have grown up too and therefore are old enough to digest the issues he presents without worry. There’s a mass of subplots and extra details in the book, making it a speedy read – there are situations where characters split up and so the narrative has to dart back and forth continuously, but Pu

Sally Lockhart is one of my role models. In this book she once again shows that strength of hers, her courage and her wit, but also her more vulnerable side. It's Sally driven into a corner, and my it's wonderful to see her try to fight her way out.
The Sally Lockhart series ranks highly on my favourite series list. Mr. Pullman is a master writer, and a genius when it comes to storylines: this book especially was so full of suspense that I just wanted to keep reading. Putting this boo More...

This book is by far the best in a series where it is no stretch to say that each book is better than the last.
Pullman's plot is complex and rewarding, and - as always with this author - his prose is evocative and beautiful.
Sally, now the mother of two-year-old Harriet, finds herself in an unexpected situation when her friends are abroad and she is served with custody papers from a man claiming to have been her husband. The problem: she has never been married, and has nev More...

The end of the Sally Lockhart Trilogy! That only took me probably half a decade to read...
I'm trying to make this summer the summer that I finish off a lot of series I've left hanging over the years. So far I've finished the Dollaganger books (evil V.C. Andrews), the Percy Jackson series (mmmm) and now Sally Lockhart.

My favorite in the Sally Lockhart series - the villain is predictable, but I didn't mind. Pullman weaves in broader social context - socialism, immigration, elitism, anti-semitism, etc. - which gives the story more depth, and Sally goes through a bit of a "political evolution" as the story unfolds which is interesting to see. Also interesting is her internal struggle as she realizes that being an indeendent, career-minded woman (striking achievement given the time period of these boo

finally, i finish the trilogy of sally lockhart! our precocious girl heroine is a woman now, with a daughter, a flourishing business, a happy household, and a whole new tangled mess of problems. for me, this was the book where sally became a whole person. she has actual inadequacies! shortcomings! someone doesn't show up to save her at the last minute in improbable ways every time she's in trouble. she's a real adult, and this means that sometimes terrible things happen, there's no resolution, a
