I can't quite remember if I read this one as a child too, but I'm pretty sure I did. If I did, I could remember absolutely nothing about it by now, so it was basically like reading it for the first time. This book picks up directly after the last page of the previous book, and continues the adventures of Elmer Elevator and the baby dragon. After Elmer saves his friend from the animals of Wild Island, they journey to take Elmer home, but become waylaid by a fierce storm at sea. When the storm More...

A continuation of the lighthearted fantasy begun in My Father's Dragon, in which the dragon delivers Elmer to his home after their adventures. Throughout their journey they meet similar challenges as in the first story -- a storm that maroons them, a riddle to be solved on an isolated island, and treasure discovered. Elmer's homecoming (bearing gifts for his parents) is heartwarming, although he never tells the secret of his adventure.

It would be better for his adventure take place More...

This sequel to My Father's Dragon was really fun to read with my kids. On Canary Island is a buried treasure, and Elmer helps the canaries unbury the treasure. My five year old loves pirates and dragons, so buried treasure made this small chapter book extra interesting to him. It was funny to hear his predictions of what would be in the treasure chest! Even though the book is about 50 years old, it still is interesting to kids today. We were reading it outside in the backyard, and when the More...

I can't believe that my childhood was void of this book. Just had the pleasure to read it aloud with my 5 year old. She is a very new reader and we took it at a leisurely pace. It immediately drew her in despite her reluctance to read a "real" chapter book. Elmer's adventures and friendship with the Dragon are so fresh and magical - the imagery lit up the imagination of mother and child. Part of the reason the book took a few weeks to read was that my five year old was so delighte More...

Read to my 6 year old grandson...
In his words.."It was really good, I liked the part where the dragon gave the watch necklace to Elmer." "Can we read the next one now?"

This book is so enchanting. Elmer and the Dragon arrive on Feather Island where the Canaries are dying of old age due to "curiousity." Will the King of the Canaries, King Can XI, reveal his secret?

What a difference a POV change can make! Like My Father's Dragon, this is the story of Elmer's adventures with the dragon, except that the first is told as a narrative by Elmer's son, and this book eliminates the son's voice completely, and Elmer is the main character. Like I said, what a difference! My kids enjoyed it, and so did I!

While still great, I liked My Father's Dragon and the Dragons of Blueland a little better. (My boys thought they were all great, but they play acted the first and last book more.) Perhaps the canaries aren't quite as exciting as the other character in the other books and perhaps there is just a little less action.

Elmer and The Dragon picks up right where My Father's Dragon left off. In Elmer And The Dragon Gannett exchanges the stand-alone nature of each chapter with more of an over-arching story. Gannett's series of books offers simple, enjoyable, imaginative stories with artwork that pops off the page.

This triology was a fun set of stories we read to the kids. I didn't overly love them but the kids listened intently and really enjoyed them. I thought they were a good length for them to get used to the idea of listening to a story without the pictures being involved.

Summary: Elmer and Boris the dragon are stranded on a remote island inhabited only by canaries. One of them, Flute, was Elmer's pet until he escaped to Canary Island. Elmer helps Flute and the king and queen canaries to dig up a chest that the island's former human settlers left. Inside are various household items, a watch, a harmonica, and six bags of gold. The dragon flies Elmer back to his house before returning to Blueland, his own home.
Response: I was surprised at the differences in More...

This is a cute book about a boy who rescues a dragon. It has themes of perseverance, friendship and more. One can see how modern children's fiction has its roots in books such as this.

the second book is even better than the first since we get to know a lot about the dragon himself, though i did miss the forest a lot.

I just finished reading this to my boys (6 and 4)and loved it. I had never heard of the My Father's Dragon series until it was recommended by a local librarian. (We had just finished the Magic Tree House series and I wasn't quite sure where to go next.) These fantasy/adventure books were first published in the mid 1900s and are clever, fast paced and wholesome. Great for reading out loud to young children and simple enough that I can have my 6 year old read passages too. We are now enjoying t More...
