Quick little book to read. It offers substantial insight and is a good reminder to yourself to just be comfortable with who you are and not what you want others to see you as. I found it helpful as a school counselor. Daily I asked my students "what do you want to be after high school?" Which implies a specific job that will define someone. When really the more appropriate question is, "who will you be after high school?" This is much more open and allows for further exploration into life outsid...more
Oh my, I recommended this book for our December book club since it was short and since I had seen Maria Shriver interviewed on Oprah. The book was a total disappointment! Shallow and without redeeming value. Do not buy. To make the book more palatable, I researched her life to answer the question of why she married Arnold. Now that was sort of interesting.

This book is based on a speech that Maria Shriver gave to her nephew's high school graduation. There are some good nuggets to think about in this book (like the fact that it's never too late to dust off your dreams), but a few things didn't sit quite right with me. 1) She mentioned a couple of things that her teenagers said to her that seemed very "attitude-y", that seemed to add to Shriver's "identity crisis." Since the reader only sees this on paper, there's no way to see facial expressions, o...more

Blah blah blah...very disappointing book. This very small tiny book with large print and gigantic margins is basically the speech that Maria Shriver delivered to her nephew's high school graduation. You can get much more practical information by googling 'who do you want to be when you grow up'. Definitely not worth the price. Quick read-about 1 hour.
P.S. I am not a lover of Oprah's books, I should have known better.

This is foremost a graduation book for high school grads. Maria Shriver wrote this book after giving a speech at her nephew's graduation and at the prompting of those in attendance.
It appears that the speech evolved in the midst of Shriver's own identity crisis. This best part of this little book (91 pages) is her poem "Just Who Will You Be?" The poem focuses on fame (many high schoolers' dream) and the warning that fame is only a perception created by others and not who you really are.

As I've been struggling a lot lately with how I feel about myself, how I view myself, and how I want others to see me, this was a perfectly timed read. I picked it up as a bargain buy on Amazon for my Kindle, and I'm so glad I did. Shriver tells about how she felt out of sorts with herself as the First Lady of California, because she felt she was more than that. As she questioned herself, she found that she had at one time linked much of her identity to her career, but that didn't feel right eit...more
A quick little book. I don't remember how I acquired this book, but I certainly am glad I didn't buy it full price. I think someone gave it to me to read a long time ago, and I finally came across it and it looked like it would be a quick read (which it was, maybe it took me an hour or so to read).

This book has helped me understand its more important to figure out who we want to be as a person then what we want to do with our lives. For example, your figuring out whether you want to be a verternarian is only the first step. Deciding whether you are going to persue it for the love of and compassion towards animals, not for the love of money is whats most important. This book is great for anyone who needs some inspiration and up lift in their direction in life. Maria Shriver really makes the...more
I enjoyed Maria's perspective in this book very much, especially during this hard economical time period for our country. With so many people being laid off and feeling that the world is ending (or at least their own personal world), she gave the reader hope that they can turn their own life around. The only question is Just Who Will You Be?

In this book, Maria shows her authenticity and her vulnerability when she goes into a tail-spin when asked to speak at her nephew's Grad ceremony. She did not know what she could offer since she had previously been forced to resign as an NBC anchor woman when her then-husband became governor. What did she have to offer these graduates? She feels like a failure and has to do some deep soul-searching when her nephew persists in having her speak. This book is the result of her self-inquiry and it i...more
Thankfully, it only cost me 20 minutes of my life to read this book. And I didn't directly pay good money for it, as I checked it out of the library. I'm sorry that the author is having a mid-life crisis and just now realized that she should be living her life based on her values, not those of others. But this is a magazine article masquerading as a book. If you must read it, check it out of the library. There's nothing new here and no need to read it twice. Actually, just read my review and the...more
Overall interesting read that makes you think about what your purpose and meaning in life is. Main lesson learned is that you should really think about what do you want to be remembered as when you leave this world. Chances are that you won't be remember by just whatever career you have. The book is mainly about a high school graduation speech that Maria was asked to give at her Niece's graduation and all the things she thought about in her life as she tried to capture what a high school audienc...more
Sederhana...more
Lines I loved from this book:
Asking ourselves not just what we want to be, but who we want to be is important at every stage of our life, not just when we’re starting out in the world. That’s because, in a way, we’re starting out fresh in the world every single day.
We can allow ourselves to keep changing and growing and evolving. Actually, we’re supposed to.
My dad, Sargent Shriver, started the Peace Corps, and my mom, Eunice, founded the Special Olympics.

This was a very quick read and a small book. This would be a great graduation present for graduating high school or college kids.
I saw the interview with Maria Shriver on Oprah and again I thought that the content of the book was misleading from the interview. Oh well, I guess I need to sift my Oprah viewing a little bit better! :)
But, it was interesting to me that a person from the Kennedy/Shriver legacy was asking the question in her 50's, "Just Who Would She Be"? She had been defined by her c...more

I have only watched Oprah once in recent history. I was channel surfing in the middle of the afternoon-also a rare thing-however I was glad I stumbled across an interview with Maria Shriver. I admit--I hated her because she was beautiful. Not really, but I thought she had it all. I was delighted at the way she opened up--she thinks and feels just like all of us. She's just a person, living a life, like me. She peeled away the layers of legacy and beauty and fame to find herself.

This short book is based on a speech given to graduating high school students, and I think it would have made a great, thought provoking speech. However as a book it fails to deliver on the promise to help the reader consider 'who will you be'. Instead, it really only poses this question.
The reminder that what we do with our lives is more important than what job we have is useful. But I am not sure that I am any closer to answering the question posed by the title.

Just Who Will You Be? This is a question that I've been struggling with lately. I really want to be the fun girl that I once was, but I'm also trying to be a responsible wife and mother. I'm also trying to live up to expectations that I feel others have for me. Notice- other people may not have those expectations for me, but I *feel* like they do. Or maybe I expect them to expect me to....

This was a quick read, great little inspirational ditty by Maria Shriver. She wrote it as an after-thought, as it was the speech she delivered to her nephew's high school graduation. It is a question we all try to answer at some point, both who and WHAT do we want to be. She touches on the whole fame thing, letting kids know that it isn't as glorious as they may believe. Great book to give as gifts for graduation.
Applicable to everyone...wisdom for those deciding what to focus their lives on but also we all need to evaluate life long where we are and where we want to go: "Only way you can come to feel worthy and really good about yourself, the only way to find a life of meaning and joy is to find your own voice, find your own path, follow your own heart, and live your own life, not an imitation of somebody else’s. "
This little book packs a simple, easy-to-follow, and meaningful punch. It's a quick read with themes that resonate at any age or stage in life. Some self-help / inspiration books can be too esoteric or lack insights which foster an "ah-ha" moment for me. While this book could be criticized for its not-so-deep format, I appreciated the instantaneous, real-world applications of Maria's reflections.
I went to B&N 5th ave..and met her ..she is cute and tiny..she autographed the copy. Just musings on our reflections as we get older.
It's okay. I told her I wanted to return ot Cuba..hint, hint..she is an Obama supporter..maybe she could get his ear, and have him drop this ridiculous embargo, so we can go home to at least visit!

I love this book. I think everyone should read it. I'm serious. Just like the title of the book, seriously.....Just WHO will you be? I'm asking everybody. I learned from this book that it's not WHAT you will be, it's WHO will you be. I can't be able to tell you about it. If you want to know, you have to read it. It is such a good book. I read it over and over again. I love it.
I liked this book for its overall message, but I thought it lacked a bit in substance. I don't usually read books that take me 30 minutes to read from start to finish! After reading this title, I was left thinking about my niece who is graduating in 2010. Would I buy her this book? Maybe, but I think I would probably pick something with a bit more substance.

This book was not very good. While I agree its important to ask yourself, who you want to be, and I often incorrectly ask my own kids, 'what do you want to be?' thats pretty much all I got out of the book. Its fluff. Picked this up at the library, read it within 30 minutes. It's basically an essay published into a little book. Wish it had more substance than that. It's basically the speech she gave at her nephews graduation. What I did take from it, is that it doesn't matter "What" you do in life, but more "Who" you are in life.
