I read this book somewhat under duress. After sitting on his shelf for more than a year, my son chose it for a book report, and I decided it was finally time for me to read it, too - despite the fact I've picked it up and read the first couple of pages several times. For some reason there was something about the idea of a bunch of young teens trying to make it onto an Everest expedition that turned me off. I've read enough about Everest treks, including Krakauer's "Into Thin Air," to k...more
Everest #1: The Contest, by Gordon Korman
An athletic company is holding a contest to sponsor the youngest climber ever to summit Everest, the highest mountain in the world. "The Contest" follows several young hopefuls as they compete for a place on the four person team.

Have you ever dreamed of climbing Mt. Everest? In Everest: The Contest by Gordon Korman a few lucky climbers get that chance. This book follows the story of a young boy, Dominic, and his older brother who want to get the chance of a lifetime. Dominic is obsessed with finding his way on to the expedition team by winning a contest. They both find their way on to the candidate list and go to compete for spots on the team at a camp. Training camp is very difficult and very competitive. Each day is a...more
This was a fun adventure type novel. I never would have picked it up based on the cover, because it looks like a nonfiction book, and I just have a hard time with nonfiction, but it was recommended to me by a friend. The book I read had all three Everest novels in one, and they read extremely quickly. Possibly this is partly because in the prologue of the first book, it lets you know right off that one of the teen hikers isn't coming back from Everest, but you won't find out who until the end of...more
Four kids want to be the first to climb the highest mountain in the world Mount Everest. The mountain has claimed the lives of many adults, so the American Junior Alpine Association hosts a competition of intensive training to weed out the real talent from the people who don't have what it takes. This climbing contest began as a friendly competition. As the climb progresses, the mountaineers realize just how extreme the conditions can be. Supplies start to run low. The kids may be trying to f...more
This is a children's series that doesn't try to talk down to kids. Instead, these books introduce new terms and techniques from the sport of climbing that even many adults have not come in contact with. This series does not try to make reading easy. It focuses more on the story and the adventure. I do have complaints about the series, like the fact that it is a series. The beginning of books two and three both have to recap what has occurred to that point in the story. Just make it one book so t...more
This book is the first in the trilogy (of which I don't own). It revolves around a group of children chosen to go through boot camp and be chosen to attempt a climb on Everest. In a reality type format, a group of children come together in Colorado to go through trials and tribulations and to be voted onto the Everest expedition.

After my last experience with Gordan Korman, I was a little wary wading into this series. But my sister, who is obsessed with Everest insisted that I give it a try, so I picked it up one day.
Boy, oh, boy, is Gordon Korman back. His Everest trilogy reminded me that, despite his missteps, Korman can weave a pretty fantastic story when he wants.

I have recently just finished my book Everest. It's about a competition and the 5 finalists get to climb Mount Everest. However, many more people joined. You can get into the competition by either finding a candy rapper that says you won or you can be recruited. One person each week will be eliminated. Everyone will do training sessions and if the counselors don't think your good enough you will be eliminated. There is are decisions made. You have to read the book to see what happens!!!
Korman books fill the "Guys Read" section in my library - and with good reason. Kids love his characters and adventure settings in the Everest, Dive and Shipwrecked series. In "The Contest," korman throws together four kids who are vying to be the youngest climber to scale Everest. These kids all have drive and ambition and will stop at nothing to capture the title. If you're a competitor that enjoys some chills and thrills with your sport, this book/series is a great choice.
What an outstanding first book in a series! If you love survival stories, you have to read this title. This is the first book in the Everest survival series. Several kids compete to be the youngest person ever to climb Mount Everest. The boot camp is tough, but finally they have a team assembled to climb the mountain. This is a build up to the second book in the series, The Climb. Awesome adventure, survival story…I couldn’t put it down!

This book is about a group of kids that won a contest through this protein shake and protein bar company to go and climb mount Everest with the best climbers in the world. They first start out in colorado and move through a series of cuts to get to the final cut and if you make it through the final cut the kids get to go to Alaska to brave the harsh elements that are similar to the conditions on everest except for being on a glacier.
This book tought me to never quit.

In this book the main charactor Dominic Alexis is tring to get into the SummitQuest athletics. He is so small that the ledader of the Quest (Cap Cicero) trys to kick Dominic off the team, but he is so skillful that Dominic makes the team. Now he is trying to go to the top of the world. I learned from this book that you should never judge anyone by by there hieght or the way they look.
This was a very interesting book. I really enjoyed most of it. I was a little confused at the beginning because there were so many characters but you never really got to know who was who. Once the characters became clear, I started to really enjoy it. The kids were so different from each other. The story was intense. It kept it interesting. I'll be reading the next book in the series right away.
I gave it a five star because i really like when it is so relaxing but at the same time you just want to hop in the book and help the people and stuff like that. i really like a lot of the action and adventure books because when you are reading the book it is like you just want to be in the book with them or you just fell like you are in the book when you are reading it.
One of Gordon Korman's extreme sport series, this "cliff-hanger" (excuse the pun but I couldn't resist) will have kids clamoring for more and dying to know the outcome. This is part one of a 3-part series. Korman has also written Island and Deep, both 3 part series of this type. More reluctant reader stuff - boys and girls. hi-lo. 132 p. Adventure.
I actually picked this up for Cayden. It was a little too advanced for him, but would be great for 5th or 6th grade, especially an adventure lover. A quick, breeze through kind of read. Got it done in an hour or so. Lots of action, some character development, though not a ton. Still, great for upper grade school kids.
A quick, competitive, and suspenseful story to kick off what I imagine will be an exciting and successful trilogy. As a posse of young climbers compete to win one of four slots on a Mt. Everest climbing expedition, they come face to face with their athletic and personal strengths and challenges.
I've been wanting to read this trilogy for a long time. Everest has always fascinated me. I like to read these shorter, easier books sometimes so I can recommend them to the kids I teach at school. I will definitely recommend these to upper elementary and middle school students.
I thought it was a OK book, I have read better things but I think it was OK. It was one of the three books so of course it ended on a huge cliff hanger. So I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about Everest and what it takes to get up there.
Everest is a very intense book. Its basically a contest between a bunch of kids that are all competing for a spot on the team that will eventually climb Mount Everest. The whole expedition is led by a legendary climber Cap. He works the kids as hard as he can in a training spot up in the mountains of Denver. The book is wrote in the view of a thirteen year old boy with the last name of Alexis who is 2 years younger than the youngest climber to ever climnb Everest. He has a very small body but a ...more
At the beginning of the book i got a little confused and as i contninued reading it got really good.I thought this because it hadn a lot of adventure and it was surprising that alot of these 13 to 15 year old kids are working hard and are going to climb Mount Everest.
Great, quick read for reluctant readers. Packed full of action and dialog, The Contest marks the start of an engaging read that will appeal to both girls and boys of a broad age range. 10 and up
:)I really enjoyed this book its just like dive at the beginning just a different story line! I gave it four because at the beginning it sort of boring but thats for like three chapters!!!:)
This series was interesting in that it is amazing thinking of all it takes to climb Mt Everest. It had a lot of teen drama though. Not one I would read again. I liked Peak better.
The height of danger. The height of competition. The height of the world.
Who will be the youngest person ever to climb Mount Everest? It's the ultimate test of endurance and skill. The mountain has claimed the lives of many adults. Now kids are going to compete to break the record.
Some are not ready for what they will face. And some will stop at nothing to get to the top.

I thought this was a great book and it was like you could actually feel you were in the characters shoes training and competing but it can be misleading at times.
I think this book was the slowest of the series, but I still liked it. Would you like to try climbing mt. Everest when your only 13/14? Some people do.
Of the 3 Korman series (Shipwreck, Island, Everest), this is by far my favorite. Very engrossing, quick reads. Good for adults and teens.

Korman wrote his first book, This Can't be Happening at Macdonald Hall, when he was 12 years old for a coach who suddenly found himself teaching 7th grade English. He later took that episode and created a book out of it, as well, in The Sixth Grade Nickname Game, where Mr. Huge was based on that 7th grade teacher.
