“A novel set in 1960 Cold War Germany doesn't sound like an auspicious beginning for a young adult read; nor do the protagonists, who are teenage army brats used to relying on one another for support and companionship. But an adult-sounding setting and circumstances is exactly what sets Our Wild and Precious Lives apart from other young adult reads and makes it a vivid and ...more

Reserved Tom and outspoken Melly are used to change. Their father, Sergeant Major Jim McCarron, served in World War II. Together with their mother Lina, a skittish Italian war bride, they frequently move from one uncomfortable army base to the next. No one except Melly dares complain about their nomadic lives, for fear of igniting Jim’s violent rage.

When Jim accepts a position in 1960s Germany, the teenage siblings are surprised, then uneasy. Their parents have dark memories of the broken post-N

I cannot improve upon what the other reviewers have said. This is an exceptional novel, which, as they have noted, seems more a memoir than a work of fiction. The Amazon author page is blank for Mr. or Ms. Russo, but surely the author was a soldier.

Our Wild and Precious Lives deals with the big questions of Life, Death, Love

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved that this novel was set during the Cold War and found the setting interesting. Tom and Melly are both likable characters, and their bond of pure unconditional love for each other is something you don't often find between fictional siblings.I loved Melly's feistiness, but also thought she was quite spoilt at times, such as when she complained to her mother about the dress she had made for her looking too similar to her frien

I like passionate novels: as my teacher once said: if one doesn't care about the protagonist(s), why should one read the story? Our Wild and Precious Lives is all about such caring, and I recommend it for young adults and adult readers of young adult fiction, alike.

A novel set in 1960 Cold War Germany doesn't sound like an auspicious beginning for a young adult read; nor do the protagonists, who are teenage Army brats used to relying on one another for support and companionship. But an adult-sou

Our Wild and Precious Lives was an easy read. I quickly fell into the story and found it difficult to put down. I enjoyed the author's writing a lot. We're treated to a full and descriptive story without the author being long winded or boring. And though I didn't need most of the definitions (thanks to growing up near a military base and having numerous Army brats for friends), I did like that the author included them for certain military and German terms. Little touches like that help me enjoy ...more

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" Mary Oliver

From the perspective of someone who was an Army brat, in Germany, in the late fifties, early sixties, this book is a poignant return to the years of lost innocence. The events cover first love, binding friendships, personal tragedies, high school angst, and the yearning to understand the fathers who dedicated so much of their lives to keeping America free, sometimes at the expense of their families. An alternat
