Alg

i just wanted to give it 4 stars just because it's not as good as "pillowman"...but it has In Bruges's Violence and it was so funny like other Mcdonagh's stage-plays and screenplays... so i should give it all 5 stars

Donny y ...more

I suppose I should only give this four stars, as it's not quite as good as The Pillowman (or In Bruges), but we just went to see it last month and I was in stitches. A cat that is the only friend of a young IRA splinter group terrorist is killed by some like-minded members of his own somewhat loosely defined profession, who are hoping to lure him home for the funeral so that they can get him out of the way for good. High jinks ensue. More cats are killed. I laughed so hard at the "happy cats" li ...more

What the fuck. lol. This book is a trip. It was very unexpected, even though I didn't really have many expectations or any idea what it was about, I REALLY didn't expect this.
*The book starts out with a dead cat with half of its head missing. What?! Who would do that to a cat? Well you find out soon enough. There is then a semi-psychotic CIA-type (Irish version) splinter group torture guy doing god awful things that will make you cringe, as well as a whole bunch of other gory goings-on throughou

Martin McDonagh, The Lieutenant of Inishmore (Dramatist's Play Service, 2003)

Martin McDonagh is one of the world's finest playwrights, whether he's writing for stage (The Pillowman) or screen (In Bruges). Here is more evidence of that: The Lieutenant of Inishmore, as savagely funny as In Bruges and as full of violence as The Pillowman, examining the absurdity of the continuing conflict in Ireland with McDonagh's always-jaundiced eye.

The play opens with the death of a cat. In fact, the whole play

If there is a funnier play about terrorism and the failures of familial bonds it has yet to be written. This one features two assassinated cats, one tortured drug-dealer, three murdered terrorists, and one other facing execution for forming a splinter group from a splinter group, and two hapless fools, one the father of the title character and the other the brother of a cow-blinding would-be terrorist. At one point near the end, the stage is splattered with blood and body parts and it works as a ...more

Recommends it for: cat-fanciers, people who hate people (but like animals)
The best of the McDonagh books I've read so far. I guess it helps that this one is actually directly about terrorism, specifically about the mundane (and boring) nature of violence. It's got terrorism, a man's love for his cat, small town hijinks, characters who are so crazy/stupid that it's impossible not to be awed by them and words that make you want to savour the scene and save it so it doesn't end quickly.

It's rather gruesome (and I'd love to see it performed live) and yet the dialogue is

True to expectations, this was an over-the-top comic, violent clash of characters, politics, and personal concerns. Brutally playing out the effects of political violence on the stage, McDonagh maintains the style he is known for - fast-paced, deadpan humor that manages to coexist with heavy issues and subject matter. In all, it's a hilarious, gruesome, finely-crafted story of politics and affections gone horribly wrong.

This is the second play in the Inishmore trilogy (the third was never published), and it is by far the darkest of all McDonagh's work. Pitch black. Full of the same laugh-out-loud dialogue and absurdist situations, this play has a much crueler, more pessimistic core. The final scenes are horrifically violent, and McDonagh is unrelenting in his treatment. This is my least favorite of McDonagh's plays because it lacks the subtlety and complexity of his best work - The Cripple of Inishmaan, A Skull ...more

Humor is blacker than The Cripple of Inishmaan, and gorier too. Yet I think this play is weaker and less successful than The Cripple. However, there is some great commentary on violence concerning the terrorist groups of Ireland (IRA, INLA, etc).

I'm thinking the play and its brand of humor needs to be experienced from the stage rather than reading off the page.

Outrageous and gory, this play both made me cringe and laugh out loud. The plot was simple enough to understand easy with plenty of twists to make it surprising, and the characters are hilarious. I would definitely recommend this to anybody that can bear reading about mutilated cats.

Not one of the better plays that I have read.

This one deals with the IRA in Ireland and tells the story of a harsh violent man, prone to torturing others in the name of his political beliefs. Being told that his cat was sick he goes home to find his father and a friend deceiving him about his dead cat. Death and violence are the main characters in this play.

Cats. The IRA. Splinter groups. Splinter groups of splinter groups. Mad Irishmen. But mostly cats. A wonderful short play for fans of the particularly dark style of Irish comedy, The Lieutenant of Inishmore tells the story of Mad Padraic, a lieutenant of the Irish National Liberation Army who rushes home when he learns that his cat Wee Thomas is not doing well. At times dark and other times ridiculous, The Lieutenant of Inishmore is a great read for anyone looking to enjoy comedy that is just a ...more

Martin McDonagh's play "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" is a fantastic, if grisly, look at the Irish troubles. The more I read and see McDonagh's work, the more I love this playwright and the tough questions he asks about our broken and violent natures.

If I were Professor Julian Olf, I would say: "The Lieutenant of Inishmore suffers from an unorganized plot without clear beats, wandering and bumbling along to its gruesome end. It is over-simplistic with too much exposition, there is no subtext to be seen. The characters are one-sided, their motivation unbelievable, and act outside of how an ordinary human would act."

Fortunately, I am not Julian Olf.

I will admit that Lieutenant of Inishmore is not as well-crafted as The Pillowman and does read

Farcical and violent: violence though "real" is grounded as much in the comedic story. Black comedy subverts the political,in its over-the-top presentation. The pet cats that ostensibly drive the plot (the McGuffins) stand in as a sign of the futility of political violence, where the care of the cats outweighs the nominal causes for terrorism.

A bit more kitty-death than I would prefer, but I was able to look past it and see the brilliance of this very darkly funny play. I don't think, though, that I could watch it.
