Historical bodice-ripping romance. Whatever next. Well, I'm ashamed to admit I couldn't put it down. Actually, why should I be ashamed, it was a pretty good unputdownable rollicking historical drama, set during uptight, repressed tight-lipped (tight trousered) Victorian era and Crimean War where things got a LOT more exciting. Strait-laced heroine follows her more feisty glamorous cousin out there after her letters home dry up (passionate outspoken Rosa's gone out there to be a nurse and follow ...more

The two cousins at the centre of this book could not be more dissimilar. Mariella is thoughtful, timid and conventional; her sights are set on marriage to Henry, a promising young doctor. Rosa is reckless, couragous and unconventional; she is determined to make a career for herself in medicine, despite the reistance of the medical institutions to the ambitions of women. The lives of all the protagonists are changed, however, by the outbreak of the Crimean War. First Henry is drawn into the chaos...more

I was left feeling really disappointed with this book. It had an abrupt ending which left me feeling as though everything had been left up in the air. The historical aspects were interesting, especially the contrast between Mariella's ordered life in England and her experiences in the Crimea. The switch in timelines got to be quite annoying, especially after the long time it took for Mariella to finally start searching for Rosa; I just wanted the author to get on with it by that point.

This is an historical novel set during the Crimean War, about two women, cousins, one of whom goes to nurse at the front - I read the first chapter at the lovereading site and pre-ordered it from the library. I was especially interested to read a novel set in this period after reading Mary Seacole's autobiography.
I enjoyed the book but found the way it is written slightly confusing - it keeps jumping to and fro between several different periods in Mariella's life, so that you have to remember...more

This was a great read - it got me gripped from the very beginning. It tells the story of two young women, Mariella and her cousin Rosa.

You travel from Suburban London to Derbyshire to the Crimea in a story that tells the tale from the very early days of nursing and general war medicine.

I loved it and I hope you do too!

Loved this book - taught me some Crimean history and also social history relevant to womens' lives at the time. It also had some romance based on reality.

I really enjoyed this book - even the ending. This book has inspired me to learn more about Florence Nightingale and the Crimean War. Enjoyable, quick read.
