Sixteen-year-old Cassie Winslow feels alone after her mother died in a car accident.

Her parents were divorced and her father remarried. Her father has Cassie come to live with him and his family in Cape Cod. When she arrives, she makes friends with her neighbor, Eric Cavanaugh, who is her age. However, most of the other students at her school take the lead from Eric's former girlfriend and shut her out. They make hurtful comments about her and Cassie doesn't know how she'll fit it.

I have difficulty 'not' finishing a book I have started - even if I am not enjoying it. As I began this one, recommended by a womand I met at a campground who had placed it in the exchange library, I had an inkling that I would not rejoy it, but it was late at night and the only book at hand (very limited shelves in 23' RV) so I kept reading, As I read, I kept hoping tht the author would find a way to make everything come out with a good (by my standards) ending and resolve what appeared to be More...

It's hard for me to put into words what I thought of this book. It was chilling, suspenseful, and the author had a way of describing the scenes that made me feel like I could really picture in my head what was happening. So, for all of those reasons, I really liked the book.

I think what keeps me from giving it a higher rating is the fact that it's written from so many different characters' perspectives. The book was supposed to be about Cassie Winslow and there were parts of the boo More...

I know, I know, I've already read this book but here is what I think again about it. I'm disappointed in the ending - I didn't think the person who ended up being punished should have been. The book is good.

The book is about a boy and a girl who both had an incident in a swamp when they were two years old. The girls mother took her away to live in CA and it wasn't until she died that the girl returned to her home state and to the father who loved her. She barely arrives and strange More...

This was my first John Saul read. I'm not very impressed but I can't say I didn't like it. The story was good and kept me turning the pages. I couldn't really relate to the main character Cassie and I didn't really seem to like her nore dislike her. I heard from other reviews that this book is scary, but it wasn't scary at all to me. Not in the least bit. Over all, I'd say it's an easy read and somewhat enjoyable but mainly just forgettable.

This is probably one of the worst books I've ever read - well, partially read. I couldn't get past the half-way point. It was poorly written and the characters were completely unbelievable.

I fail to understand, if this is his 'style', how he became a New York Times bestseller. If I could have given this book 0 stars, I would have.

This was the first John Saul book I can remember reading...and I read it in one sitting. Most of his earlier books are very suspenseful but unfortunately, the newer ones seem to be lacking some of originality and writing skill that made me want to read his books in the first place.

To be honest this one really did not grab me. Science fiction is not my all time favorite genre, but I can get into a well written one. The characters in this book were lost to me. I did not matter which direction their lives went since I could not relate to them in the least. Oh well... on to the next book.

Some of the best writing I have read in a long time, reminded me of Stephen King the way I got into the characters. I had a hard time putting it down. Many twists and turns. Definite must read!

John Saul continues to keep me in suspense while I am reading his books. This is another one of his great thrillers. I was not expecting the ending and it was kind of left in a cliffhanger. Very enjoyable read.

It was a very dark and obscure story line. It got my attention but it had an off ending. I would have given it 1 1/2 but since I can't, I gave it 2.

Fast-paced, if not fairly unimaginative, "thriller" features a transplanted teenager who develops an odd bond to the town pariah is able to overcome lack of real terror or intrigue by its speed. Perfect for anyone who has been reading "heavier" fiction and wants some cotton candy as an interlude.

I didn't think this was a very good book. It wasn't suspenseful for me and the ending was dreadful. Doesn't the reader want to know what eventually happens to the main character of the story (Cassie)? Less than impressed. I also own "The Right Hand of Evil" but I am not sure I will read it now.

Many Saul novels are very alike in content and context. This one is no exception, but the pace and tempo to the story help overcome it.

This is an intriguing look into a small town with more than its share of oddities.

If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was a Dean Koontz.

My first book by John Saul and I got hooked! Since then I've been buying Saul's novels as per availability. Read this book when I was in sophomore year and the situation where no seems to care and notice your existence appealed to me. I can relate to the situation back then.

Not typically my choice of reading......witchcraft isn't generally a favorite topic of mine. The story was good though, and kept me turning the pages.
