James Ravilious had the disadvantage of a famous father - famous as a painter and print-maker, which could also have been James’s metier. When he applied to art school, he did so under a false name, so as to be judged on his own merits. Fortunately his artistic gifts allowed him to develop in a different direction, as a photographer.
“Colour photography isn’t profound,” he told the author of this book. His preference for working in black and white, led to (well-deserved) comparisons with Cartie
