I am a lover of biographies, especially Christian missionary biographies, which is exactly what this book is. Jim Elliot was a man passionately in love with God and he decided that he wanted to share the truth about God with an unreached people group in South America. The powerful aspect of this story is that this people group killed other individuals that were not members of their tribe quite regularly. Jim Elliot ended up getting married to Elisabeth Elliot after he had become comfortable w...more

one of, if not the best autobiography i have ever read, and this book has made a profound impact upon my day to day life. his writings are deep, and his life is extraordinary, but not. that is why i love it. his thoughts and methods are so foreign to us who are so mediocre, but what makes him extraordinary, is that he made such an simple commitment to give his life to God. see what God can do!

This is a very inspiring book about Jim Elliot's love for God and his strong faith. It was very challenging and encouraging reading about how Jim lived for God, despite his desire to get marry and the initial opposition of his parents. It is amazing that Jim never really hesitanted on his faith, choosing to major in Greek in order to serve God and not being upset about being unemployed after graduating from college. He certainly lived fully for God and his life changed many people. This is a gre...more

He was an amazing man of God......Jim Elliot. This is not a book to read on vacation. It's the kind of book that I read in small bits and pieces because it's a collection of letters, diaries, and pictures. This book is one that I will keep on my nightstand...forever. The book takes you into the mind and thought life....of Jim Elliott. He was the kind of person that I wish I could be: completely and wholly devoted to Christ. But at times, I felt that he was so keenly aware of his sin nature tha...more

Few books have impacted me as much as this "life and testament of Jim Elliot" This is the story of of an earthly man with a heavenly mind.
Jim was a man of passion and a man of prayer. this book chronicles his journey from childhood in Oregon to college days at Wheaton to the mission field of Ecuador, where he eventually gave his life at age 28.
Full of journal excerpts and personal letters, one gets to know this great man's heart. His struggles, him ambitions, his loves, his ...more

Jim Elliott was an amazing man of God, and any book about his life is inevitably challenging in a spiritual sense. I found, however, that this particular book was otherwise a little dry. It was more the story of his inner spiritual growth rather than his actual life, although obviously the two are intertwined. I think also, upon reading this book, that I was mildly disillusioned about Jim Elliott, because he came across as a somewhat arrogant argumentative person that I probably would not be goo...more

In Short: ‘Shadow of the Almighty’ is a biography by Elisabeth Elliot of her husband Jim, whose life was tragically taken in the 50s by an Ecuadorean tribe he was ministering to.

For: It is a heart-breaking but inspiring tale that every Christian with a heart for the lost should familiarise themselves with.

This was one of the best biographies I have ever read. Instead of simply telling us about Jim, Mrs. Elliot shows us who Jim was through his writings providing a far more poignant effect than most biographies. Reading through this, I felt like I honestly knew Jim. There were points when I would say, "That is totally a Jim thing to do." because I just felt like he was one of my friends and not just some person I was reading about.

More importantly, this book is spiritual insp...more

This is a wonderfully written biography of Jim Elliot, a missionary killed in his attempt to reach a tribe of warring South American natives, written by his wife Elisabeth Elliot. The writer tells the story of his life through his journals and her experience with him. The reader learns the passionate love this man has for God that led him to pay the ultimate sacrifice. This is an edifying read that will encourage every Christian to a greater devotion to God.

"He is no fool who gives that which he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose." This is the quote on the front of the book, one of Jim Elliot's most well known sayings. It was written in one of his journals. This is what Jim Elliot accomplished in his life. He died at the age of 29, yet his life has impacted many.

The book consisted mostly of Jim's own writing, his journals and letters to others. What I would have liked more is to have know more of what was going on around...more

the letters and journal entries of Jim Elliot who was killed by Auca Indians. It is put together by by Elisabeth Elliot who intersperses her thoughts throughout. It is a very good read. It is really neat to see that though he was still in college there was still that spiritual maturiy evident in his life. All his letters and personal entries were Bible saturated

Was disappointed. E Elliot was very influential writer in my mom's life and I had high hopes. I enjoyed the pictures but the writing wasn't as compelling as I thought the story deserved and I disagreed with her opinions on some issues. I have reservations on criticizing a woman with clearly more Biblical knowledge and life experience than me, but there it is. . .

This book changed my life. As I was reading it last year (2008), my prayer journal was full of quotes from Jim Elliot's journals and letters. His story (and Elisabeth Elliot's) has inpired me to live radically and unreservedly for Christ. Thank you to Elisabeth Elliot for sharing this incredible testimony!

For one week in the winter of 2004, I was moved into a different apartment while mine was renovated. A few weeks earlier, our Bible study leader (who is now in seminary) was so inspired by this book that he bought each of us a copy. No TV, no distractions, cold depressing January, and Mrs Elliot held my complete attention with this awe inspiring tale. Fast forward 3 years, and a friend/former Bible study guy is moving across the country to train to become a missionary pilot, citing this book ...more

Man I love this book. It can get a tiny little bit tedious, but totally worth pushing through. I feel like this book applies to Christians in all stages of life. For anyone considering missions this is a must read. It's amazing, knowing Jim Elliot's story, to read through and watch the way he allowed his life to be completely dictated by Christ. It was also nice to read as a young adult about a good example of a college student living a life sold out for God. I enjoyed seeing his relationship wi...more

Inspiring read of a man who chose to totally dedicate his life to spreading the gospel of Christ to a tribe in Ecuador that were knowing for killing "white men". He was willing to shed his blood to serve the Lord years before he was actually martyred.

it's not a quick read, looking into the mind of a man who has that single-heartedness for God that many of us desire. throughout the book, i would reflect on my life, my thoughts, my actions, and where i am in my passion for the Lord, and for His Kingdom. definitely challenging and inspiring.
Juliet
A very idealistic and thought provoking book. A little dated but as the book only came out a generation before mine, I still found myself challenged by Elliot's life testament and sacrifices.

One of the best books I own. I am far more impressed with Jim Elliot's life than with his death. He cared most about loving and obeying his Lord - no matter what the cost.
Janice
This book had quite an effect on me right after I graduated from college. He was a man who loved the Lord and wrote very eloquently about his walk.

I can't even imagine the relationship this man had with God on a daily basis. I can't imagine making the sacrifices he did. Very inspiring book.

David gave this book to me for Christmas. It is a true story about a missionary, Jim Elliot, who gave his life over to God's will early on in life. Interesting to see him wait on God's direction even if a person has to wait years. Slightly redundant in writing though.

And the quote from this book:
"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."
Sarah Watson
Takes time to read this incrdible story of this most amazing man and his neverending devotion to the Lord.

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose! Say no more! Passion in action!

Wonderfully profound, poetic, prayerful book - mostly excerpts from Jim Elliot's diaries.

From the Author's Web Site: My parents were missionaries in Belgium where I was born. When I was a few months old, we came to the U.S. and lived in Germantown, not far from Philadelphia, where my father became an editor of the Sunday School Times. Some of my contemporaries may remember the publication which was used by hundreds of churches for their weekly unified Sunday School teaching materials....more
