The story focuses on Kino, Juana & their infant son Coyotito. Kino is a diver & fisher. Tho the family lives peacefully, they're so poor their son sleeps in a box.
One day a scorpion crawls into Coyotito's box, stinging him. Juana attempts sucking the poison. This fails. They go to a doctor. Hearing they're poor, he tells his butler to send them away.
Kino goes pearl diving & finds "the Pearl of the World", one the size of a seagull's egg. Coyotito recovers from the sting. Word of the pearl reaches the doctor. The doctor comes to 'cure' Coyotito, giving a medicine, saying the bite will continue to sicken him otherwise. Coyotito falls ill again, implying the doctor poisoned him.
The local priest comes to bless the family. Kino tells him he will wed Juana & buy a rifle, selling pearl for funds. The next day Kino tries to sell the pearl to a local man who insists it's worthless. Enraged, Kino goes to several places in order to sell it, but each is operated by friends of the first man. Kino realizes they're conspiring to cheat him.
Kino hears "the Song of the Enemy", used to describe how he feels when his family is threatened. Their house is destroyed by arson. Furious, Kino kills a innocent man he thought was trying to find the pearl.
Kino & family travel north to sell the pearl. They discover they're being tracked by three men, two of whom are travelling on foot. A third is armed with a rifle. Kino & Juana try to avoid detection by the men who are settled in a camp nearby by escaping at night. Coyotito begins crying. Juana cannot console him. The men believe they hear a coyote in the cave in which Juana hides with Coyotito. The armed man fires into the cave just as Kino leaps to attack.
Kino ambushes & kills the three men in a frenzy. He hears the mourning cry of Juana & discovers that Coyotito was killed by the tracker's shot. Carrying Coyotito's body, they return to their village. They restore the pearl to the bottom of the sea to ensure no one would be hurt again pursuing it.
