I've waited a long time for this book and I wasn't disappointed. It's not often that a sequel is better than the original but Jeff Long's sequel to The Descent is better and more terrifying than the first.

This is the sequel to 'The Descent'. After reading the first novel in a matter of days I went straight out and bought this and it did not let me down or fail to deliver. All the claustrophobia is there as well as new and interesting (if not fantastic) characters make you re-evaluate your initial thoughts of The Descent. I couldn't put this down and finished it within days like I did the first.

Deeper is the sequel to Jeff Long's "Descent". If you haven't read Descent, go out and get it now.
Both books are set in a vast underworld people on the earth's surface were never aware of, except through religious and mythological references to hell. Well, it turns out in these books that hell is real and filled with semi-human beings who act in nightmarish ways.
The story involves a crusade led by an iron-willed housewife to reclaim her daughter who has been stole More...

This is one of the times I am extremely grateful that I finish read the rest of series/sequels when the first novel isn't too brilliant.
Deeper is a continuation of The Descent. Both novels explore a newly discovered underground world, with a previously unknown intelligent species. They explore the questions of what hell could really be like and whether the Devil really exists.
I found The Descent to be a pretty average thriller. It dealt more with how all the underground realm worked More...

I read the first book, The Descent right at the end of last year so when I found there was a sequel I had to read it straight away. I found Descent gripped me all the way through so I was hoping the same would be true for this one.
Immediately, this lacked the "edge of your seat" suspense and horror that the previous book did. The bulk of this takes place 10 years after the end of The Descent. The underworld is available for exploitation but only nervous nibbles are taking pla More...

I thought "Descent" was one of the best books I have ever read so my expectations were high for the sequel. But as they often do, this sequel dissapoints. The story is good until close to the end when it feels like Long have run out of ideas and just got drunk and made up an end to the book. The thriller and action aspects of the book are good and you have a hard time puting the book down - you do want to know what happens. Long introduces some characters that are just annoying (Rebecc

I genuinely wanted to like Deeper more than I did, and it almost got there but every time it neared total absorption for me it would dull, missing its mark. The premise, a heathen race of sub-humans existing beneath the earth's crust, has all the draw of a great story for me: mystery, history, a tilted view of the "real" world, and a good bit of horror/terror. The characters, however, were far too 2-dimensional for my tastes. I never really felt connected to them or their causes. Not e

I'm torn on this sequel to Long's excellent first book "The Descent." The intricate details that made the first book so enjoyable are gone in this sequel. This novel just feels more commercialized or sequelized - turned out quicker.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. I was entertained up until the abrupt ending, which only vaguely answered some questions and left a few other important ones unanswered.

PB/Horror/Thriller: The is the sequel to The Descent. I enjoyed The Descent and was looking forward to this book. While it was really good in places, it really missed the mark in others. The Descent was so much more believable and suspenseful. Deeper had issues, with time, travel time one point to another, gravity, and character development. Ali and Ike, who were so developed in the first book, were so empty in this one. Then there was the problems with Satan and the whole hell analogy. I zoned

This is a sequel to Long's earlier book The Descent. I loved that book and I loved this one as well. In fact I re-read it almost immediately after finishing it.

only complaint was that the author has too many sub-plots and it can be distracting

This sequel was quite exciting - though I think I enjoyed The Descent more. But I did read that these books are slated to be a trilogy which is VERY exciting. This one held a few surprises and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it - even if it was a bit open ended for my tastes. I just mean that it was a little unsatisfying in the end with many questions as to what direction the ending will take... but hopefully the third installment of this trilogy won't take another ten years!

(sequel to Descent) Deeper was still an amazing story. It veered off on a more spiritual exploration tangent that some reviewers did not appreciate. I enjoyed it but have to admit it was missing... something that the first book had in spades. Still a great story--still totally worth reading. Ends with an open road to another sequel, of course. I hope it does not take Mr. Long another ten years to write the next installment!!

A good sequal to the thrilling book "Descent". This novel picks up smoothly from where he last book left off. It continues with the colonization of the deeps and the political problems that creates. This book also includes the return of hadals and expands on their civilization and the "creator". A good read that is very dark and grim but really shows a tremendous imagination behind the story.

Deeper is the sequel to “The Descent”. I like the fact that it answered questions raised by the first book–I’m still horrified by the Hadal culture but I understand it better after reading this follow-up. Where the first book was characterized by a lot of description, the second is characterized by its fast pace: a mass kidnapping of children by the Hadals has taken place and there’s a race to find them.

Satan alive and beneath our feet. A cruel life for the fallen angel, and his cruelty to whatever being finds its way down to the deep. What a nightmare this could be, if we really had cave dwelling mutants everywhere beneath the earths crust. The detail leave something to be desired, but just go along for the ride, its pretty good, sometimes gory.

This book is quite a thriller, but the best part is how the author delves into the etymology of words, specifically Satan and Hell. It is an interesting study of fictional origins. And of course, the tense thriller parts are very very well written. This book is not as scary as its predecessor The Descent, but it definitely has some jumps in it.

This is the sequel to a book called Descent. (There was a movie made about a group of chick spelunkers with the same title. The movie took the idea of the prologue from the book, a group of female climbers being captured in the dark, and the idea of flesh eating creatures and ran with it. It is a kid under a sheet with cut holes compared to the original book, even with those cheap horror movie jump out of your seat parts. Go Read The Book!)

I really enjoyed The Descent but this follow-up was just plain nasty. Too much religious babble. Also had too much blood, gore, angst, torture, gore, evil, greed and more gore with no real pay-off. Seems like a set-up for yet another round below ground. Sadly disappointing.

I read the first book, The Descent and believe I liked it better. But this was a very good read, however very dark. I believe this is to be a trilogy. It will be interesting to see how it ends. Overall premise is that the mythology regarding "hell" actually exists with another race of people living beneath the earth. They have actually mostly died off but there is evidence of a civilization older-than-old. These creatures are human however they have horned heads and tails due to

Exciting sequel (sort of) to "The Descent". I lost interest about 3/4 of the way through and have to admit I hated the ending, but overall pretty good.

Hummm, where to start. I finished it, but am not thrilled about it. If you like lots and lots of gore and just stuff that makes you have nightmares you would like this. Probably won't read anything else by him. I like his imagination, haven't read many who have such a weird imagination, but it was just too gross for me.

This is a sequel to Jeff Long's book "The Descent", which in my opinion was a better book as it stood alone as a story. Deeper ends with out rapping up several of the key plot points, guaranteeing another book in the series. The premise, which started in "The Descent", is that hell actually does exist. Although no great literary work, "The Descent" is a great read for a rainy weekend or a long plane ride, and encompasses man's discovery of hell, and its subsequen

You know, this book started out quite good but towards the middle and on to the end, it lost all it's magic. I was very disappointed because it had the possibility to be a favorite and ended up being on the least favorite list.

Tie me off and shoot me up with some excellent fiction. I'm in need of my fix for a third to complete the series.
