The third novel in the Adrien English series finds the "ill-starred and bookish" mystery writer and bookseller battling demons--maybe literally. After bookstore clerk Angus flees following terrifying death threats, Adrien must contend with a mysterious Satanic cult, a hot and handsome university professor, and his on-again/off-again relationship with closeted LAPD Homicide...more

"This symbol is a seal. A personal signature representing a demon. A high-ranking demon."
I certainly didn't want any low-ranked demons loitering about the place. "So…what does that mean? I've been cursed?"

I assured him all was cool, although I couldn't help wondering: If God works in mysterious ways, why shouldn't the Devil seek temporary employment in a mystery bookstore?

Jake can try... Try and try... Something will always betray his "I'm not gay" fake life

I love the book, hate Jake, and pity Adrien... I don't thing I should say more. Why? I must write a quick review. I can't wait to read more! Already starting Death of a Pirate King (Adrien English Mystery, #4)

I almost gave this four stars because there's a bit of a change in tone, but it's so subtle I'm not sure I can even describe it. So, five stars it is.

This one had me on the edge of my seat at points, worried for Adrien on all levels. I'd been told I would absolutely have to get #4 to start right after this one and guess what I just downloaded.

I'm hooked.

The Hell you Say is the third book in the Adrien English Mysteries and I can say I now fully understand the obsession some people seem to have with this series.
Not that I didn't like the first two books, I did. But this one I LOVED!

I love Josh Lanyon's writing. It's witty and engaging. It evokes emotion without being overly dramatic. Adrien doesn't spell out his feelings or his heart ache for the reader. The angst, the pain, the loneliness... it's there, but it isn't overdrawn. And yet it's st...more

”It was harder to avoid demons in dreams—especially when they were your own.”

It is official Adrien has driven me to drink! The Hell You Say, book three in the Adrien English Mystery series filled my heart and soul with such longing, sadness, and hollowed out hope. Not sure I’ll be able to convey the power of this ache in my chest, but I have never wanted to hug a fictional character more in my life.

It’s Christmas time, which for Adrien English means garland, twinkling lights, and of course—dead...more

Jake is a self serving, closeted bastard who treats Adrian like shit and then has the nerve to put his hands on him and threaten him? This guy has absolutely no redeeming qualities. None. Who told me to read this series again?

Okay...off to read book four...I am such a sucker for punishment.

This is not your standard formulaic pulp mystery novel. This book made me think and I love that. But first...

Josh Lanyon, I am very angry with you! You muddled me all up and now I don't even know whether I'm coming or going. Damn you for being a skilled writer who likes to play with my head.

Big fat stinking royally enormous spoiler regarding the romance: (view spoiler)[I hate Jake, he's an ass and obnoxious and a cheater and treats Adrien like crap but he was supposed to change not attack Adrie...more

...wait..how do you end a book with a call which is about to be answered? Of course you want us to read the 4th installment of the series don't you Mr. Lanyon!? And aren't i the fortunate one to have started reading this series when you've already finished writing the last book!? Oh yes i consider myself quite fortunate 'cos this series is good. Many reviewers have hailed The Hell You Say as the best book of the Adrien English series of the first three, and I tend to agree, but I can’t deny I also greatly enjoyed the first two, which did an excellent job of establishing character psychology and dynamic, while sustaining the reader’s interest in the murder mystery as well as the reader’s investment in the characters.
I also thought the first two books were very successful in establishing Adrien’s distinct and always compelling ‘voice’ (bo...more

Lanyon’s put a curse on me! It would seem I like this sleuthing thing.

These murder mystery stories are NOT my thing. Sure, I like all the intrigue and deducing as a side plot but this series is way too heavy on the whodunit element, and yet I find myself trapped and spellbound devouring every word. Yep, totally cursed I tell you!

There is so much going on here: kidnapping, satanic cults, multiple murder investigation, a lesson in the occult, Wiccan craft, sex magic, candle magic and demonology on...more

Adrien English is gay, is gay, is gay and if you do not notice I must tell you a secret that Adrien is gay and fuck with closeted gay. Spicy saucy is what the book is about. I was surprised how fine the plot was set at the beginning aka Satanists on rampage and Adrien is in the middle of sniffing around only to risk to be snuffed. But then the plot line got holes and characters became idiotic even for this type of literature.

this series reads like one very long book, and this third book is the painful part. just when "their fucking" started to feel like love....

J: my God, I
A: me too

then bam, jake is obviously scared of his feelings and grabs on to kate as some kind of escape.

J:its not because of your health....its got nothing to do with the way i feel about you

this scene was so difficult to digest...so painful and shocking...it sits in your chest like a rock... a little too close to home, reminding me of an old love...more

The series just gets better as it progresses, I have a real fondness for these two and get deeply pulled into their highly dysfunctional relationship! Jake and Adrien hit rocky ground and their future is shaky but you just know that there's a lot more to come between them. Another complex plot, quirky characters, Adriens unique snark and Jakes brooding! Hubble , bubble , toil and trouble... Love these books. Even better a second time around.

My life will never be the same
'Cause deeply closeted cop, you came and changed
The way I walk, the way I talk
I cannot explain the things I feel for you
But homophobic Jake, you know it's true

At least that was how it was SUPPOSED to go. The Hell You Say? What The Hell, you mean. Seriously, what the hell Detective Jake Riordan?!

I thought I would just lie down on the sofa this Sunday - since Holland is completely snowed in anyway - with a gigantic mug of hot chocolate and indulge in Adrien and Jake,...more

Angus's odd lifestyle plunges Adrien into another mystery, but The Hell You Say seems more character driven than plot-driven. Even a cultic murder takes a back seat to the changes in Adrien's life; but since I'm sold on Adrien, that's fine. His story moves forward as his mother makes a startling announcement and his problems with Jake come to a head, creating a make or break moment in their relationship.

Unsure why everyone loved it so much, for me there were two good things in this book:

-Adrien
-the plot

The rest was truly terrible - the non-existent relationship between Jake and Adrien, right up to the end, had me growling and swearing and I wanted to kill Jake. Even Lisa annoyed me a teeny bit...but Jake pissed me off, I do not care, for me - he can bend down and kiss my arse.

Third in the Adrien English series. Demons, death threats and Christmas shopping, oh my!

I was a bit apprehensive going into this third book as I already severely dislike Jake and with another two books to go in the series, Adrien was hardly going to get his HEA in this one. The mystery this time involves Adrien's employee, Angus, and the world of the occult. Adrien and Jake's relationship continues as it did at the end of the last book with some subtle changes in Jake's behaviour until (view spoiler)[ Jake tells Adrien that his girlfriend is pregnant and he intends to marry her. I'm really torn about these books. I want to LOVE them, but I'm never entirely that entertained, or enamored, by them. However, after ending each one, I quickly purchase, download, and consume the next in the series. (clearly I'm the problem here! ha!)

"The Hell You Say", book 3 of the Adrien English series was OK. By book 3, I've come to like and be loyal to our lead, Adrien. And by book 3, I think the author has found his voice with Adrien. Adrien is sharper, funnier, and stronger now.

This has to be the low point of the series for me. It's well-written and well-researched, as always, hence saving the book from a 2 rating, but...but...

I've read a lot of Lanyon by now and though I sometimes grouse about abrupt endings and the occasional one-note character, I always come away feeling satisfied in every sense that matters. Not this time. This book left me drained. By the end, I was weary and angry. Only the fact that I knew there would be more and that this bleak episode had to p...more

I liked the writing and Adrien's sense of humor. It seemed particularly sharp and contributed to the enjoyable portions of this story. I was initially interested in the satanic cult storyline but the resolution and how it just happened and then it was over just felt flat. There were side issues with Adrien's mom, Lisa getting engaged and having to deal with potential in laws. This part was OK. I don't really like Lisa as she doesn't do too much listening and appear self centered. In other words,...more

I had forgotten what a joy Adrien English is, and so quotable in his sarcastic humor. This time Adrien's shop clerk Angus is getting harassed and Adrien encourages him to leave town thinking that it would all blow over. Dead bodies start turning up that appears to be occult ritual killings and before you know it Adrien is in deep and sinking fast.

The third book in Josh Lanyon’s ‘Adrien English’ series proves to be just as good as its predecessors.

In this book Lanyon adds onto the cast of secondary characters by having Adrien’s society-belle mother marry a middle-aged councilman. The extended family make witty fodder for Adrien as he inherits three step sisters – all of whom are statuesque maidens Adrien coquettishly calls a ‘harem’.

Also joining the cast of secondary characters is University occult lecturer, Guy Snowden, who makes for swe...more

I'm very much enjoying reading this series. However, that said, I spent a lot of the time I was reading this particular addition to the series, wavering between annoyed and angry. Which isn't to say that it isn't an excellent book. And a good mystery. And a whole host of other things, including packed with humor. It was the romance, the side story that bothered me. The interaction between Adrien and Jake in this story was what had me bouncing between annoyance and anger. I even managed as far as...more

In the third book of the Adrien English Mysteries series, The Hell You Say, author Josh Lanyon presents us with another compelling mystery, while at the same time continuing his exploration of the protagonists Adrien and Jake and the emotional twists and turns of their relationship.

The mystery in Book 3 of the series is most gripping and I was completely swallowed-up by Adrien and Jake’s quest to solve the crimes. Once again, this is attributable to the author’s ability to craft an elaborate mys...more

This series is full of good mysteries, although this one was a little confusing and a lot all over the place. At least in compared to the previous two stories. In this book Adrien finds himself surrounded by occult fanatics, his new to-be step family and then there is Jake.

I have a lot to say about the last two and most of it is spoilery, so I will save those for a moment. This occult storyline seemed to have a lot of spokes and sometimes it was really difficult to follow. (view spoiler)[ As far...more

4.5 stars ~ Love, love, LOVE Adrien English! Even without the romance Josh Lanyon's mysteries would be a favourite; with the romance they're incomparable.

With each Adrien English story I've become more addicted to Josh Lanyon's writing. His mastery over the mystery is fantastic, his characters are people, regular people with all the flaws and foibles with which humans are cursed... or blessed. The suspense which builds, sometimes slowly, sometimes at the speed of light, often leaves me breathl...more
