I enjoyed The Shell Seekers so much I jumped to read another on of her books. Pilcher's novels are full of description and character and the countryside of Scotland. At first I was not sure about her, as I was pretty sure she was on my mom's nightstand back in the day... but she's got It. Instead of a quick spicy snack, her books are a long comforting meal best eaten slowly and with a nice glass of wine. :)

I like Rosamunde Pilcher. Her novels manage to give home-making the importance and satisfaction it deserves. I always want to tidy up my home and put out some fresh flowers after finishing one of her books. She has strong, older female characters who seem so real. This is a great read for . . . what else, September! :)

I received this book as a gift from a friend. She liked it and though I would, too. And I did. I really did. I have a few RP at home, but never bothered reading them, because I remember the corny TV movies based on her books. Let me tell you, this wasn't like those corny TV movies. Well, it was corny, but in a good way.
It was a bit unsettling finding myself forgetting about the story (most of the times) and concentrating instead on the settings. I found myself swept from an ancestral More...

I had a really hard time getting through this book. I thought that there was too many characters that were hard to keep track of. I had a hard time keeping all of the relationships straight. It was very descriptive--to the point of being to descriptive. I started skipping over a lot of the description. I really enjoyed the last 100 pages, but for the 600 before that I thought numerous times about quitting.

I finished this book last week again for maybe the 10th time. Everytime I read it, I love it more and more. It's a book that pulls you into the beautiful world of Scotland and weaves you through the lives of well-rounded, fascinating characters.

An engrossing story that covers the summer leading up to a huge party held in September thrown by one of the leading ladies of a small Scottish town. However, loads of previous events are thrown in to flesh out the story, as various characters reminisce about their lives and how they've changed over the years. The characters are endearing and likable, and the reader finds herself sucked completely into the story. I quite enjoyed all the Britishisms in the book, like "toes-up" for a

This is my other favorite Rosamunde Pilcher book. If I could only take 10 books with me to a deserted island, this would be in my book bag:)

Rosamunde Pilcher is one of those authors I return to, again and again. September is one of my favorites. Set in Scotland, it follows the lives of two families, the Airds and the Balmerinos. Pilcher's characters are likeable. For the most part, her women are strong: here it's Isobel and Violet. Pilcher characters grow with you, there is a depth to them that is often found lacking in popular novels.

I love Rosamunde Pilcher's description of life in Scotland. It makes me want to visit Scotland but it also makes me value my own rural life here if Vermont. Because after all, what she's really writing about is about family and friends intertwined in community. After reading this (and Winter Solstice) I bought a bottle of Harvey's Bristol Cream. Gordon's Gin, some tonic, and of course a good Scotch whiskey. Now, can anyone tell me--where do you get "digestive biscuits?"

I wanted to give this book 5 stars, I really, really did. I gave it 4 because I loved the first half of the book but not sure what happened in the second half. It is almost as if I read a really, really good book at the beginning but a not so interesting book at the end. The things I loved about this book were some of the true to life characters, the places were the story took place, but mostly because it was about people just being people. What I did not enjoy is the turn that the story made

Pilcher's books are always trustworthy and I found this very old paperback in a bookshelf one day when I was needing a book to read. I zipped right though it and though it. Interesting characters, beautiful descriptions of the Scottish countryside and made me hungry the whole time with all the food, however they sure drink too much but then that is also descriptive of their way of life.

Borrowed from public library.
She is an excellent writer, putting pen to people's emotions, but not as clean language as I'd like.
A Scottish family, their preparation for, and the events leading up to a party in September. All about people and relationships. Grandma, husband, eight year old boy, laird, eighteen year old daughter, and estranged sister.

Oh, what a wonderful book this is! It opens in May with Verena organising a ball for hre daughter Katie's 21st birthday in September. The novel revolves around her friends who are invited, over the four months until the ball happens. As ever with this author, much of the delight is in the characterisation: Vi, the wise (but worried) grandmother; Henry, a small and lovable child; Virginia, Henry's mother; Alexa falling in love in London.. and many more. They all seem such real people, although I

I read this thinking it was a sequel to "Shell Seekers" but it isn't. It has one of the characters from that story, but he plays a minor role in this book.
In keeping with her style, Rosamunde Pilcher made mention to food so many times I think I gained weight just reading about it.
-I don't know how I felt about the bittersweet ending.

I love reading Pilcher when I need an escape. Everything is so beautiful and gracious, and the problems are resolved so nicely. This book, while it is written in the same lovely style, wasn't the painless escape I was hoping for - and ended, rather badly. Oh well, on to the next.

I thought I'd read it before, but if I had, I didn't remember a thing so I don't think I had. The book is all about several friends and families coming together in September for a 21st-birthday celebration in Scotland. It's very rich with characters, description, feelings, etc.

Not my favorite. It jumped around a lot at the beginning to develop the characters and I had a hard time following who they all were till they started connecting. I really liked her other book The Shell Seekers but this one didn't keep me as interested.

Just finished and loved this every bit as much as The Shell Seekers. They are the most charming, warm and fuzzy books ever. More than anything they make me want to go take an extended vacation to the countryside of the British Isles.

I was really disappointed with this book. It struck me as a very cliche in regards to plot, characters, everything. There wasn't anything that surprised me, very predictable. I do like her easy style of writing, but there wasn't anything spectacular about it either.

Just okay. Lots of description of the diverse weather. Setting is a small Scottish village. I found the lords and ladies and acquiring titles interesting. Lots of characters and several twists.

Read this ages ago, loved it, read it several times since.
Not fine literature but a great escape story that brings me to a place where everything is wonderful.

TOO long but had to finish. Predicable, immoral, SAD - these people need the gospel. Set in Scottland.
I don't think I will read another book by this author.

Another grand cup-of-tea book, this time with a story set in craggy Scotland where far-flung family members and memories convene for an "at home" evening.

Another wonderful book from one of my favourite authors. Ms Pilcher's books are almost the only books I have read more than once. Some more than twice.

Enjoyed it, mostly because I enjoyed the prequel so much. Good author for expressing motivation in a way that isn't telling you their motivation.

Another good read by Pilcher. Pull up a cumfy chair and your favorite tea, light a fire, and dive into this sweet and lovely story.

One of the best books I've ever read with interesting characters and situations. I try to read it every year around September.

What's not to like about Rosamunde Pilcher and her books mostly set in the U.K.? I think I've read them all, this one was good.

This was the first book I had read by Rosamunde Pilcher, so I was not aware of her writing style before then. This was a book that took a long time getting into, simply because Pilcher's way of describing EVERYTHING, has a unique way of detracting from, yet adding to the story line all at the same time. Yet, from the first page to the last, I was enamored and couldn't put it down. People would ask me at different points throughout, "Is it good?" and up until the very last page, I would
