I'm a huge fun of Cutler's albums, but this is the first of his books I've read. I enjoyed it a lot, but found that I missed Cutler's voice (and playing), which add so much to his work. Several of these tales have appeared on his albums, including the title story. However, my favourite piece was 'The Spiral Staircase', which as far as I know hasn't appeared on an album. It tells of the perils of buying sheet music for something that isn't necessarily a musical instrument. Wonderful, silly ...more

Ivor Cutler was a Scottish poet, songwriter and humorist. He became known for his regular performances on BBC radio, and in particular his numerous sessions recorded for John Peel's influential radio programme, and later for Andy Kershaw's programme.
