The Wasteland: Marisa Silver's novel The God of War
By ELLA TAYLOR
On the face of things, Ares Ramirez, the 12-year-old at the broken heart of Marisa Silver’s elegiac new novel, The God of War, is working through a normal adolescence. His body is changing, his soul is torn between belonging and rebellion and he doesn’t know whether to love or hate his single mother, Laurel, with whom he lives in a run-down trailer in the Southern California desert bounded by Mexico and San Diego. But for...more

Amazing. I couldn't put it down. Silver is an incredible storyteller. I can't stop thinking about Ares, his disabled younger brother Malcolm, his unconventional mother Laurel and their trailer at the edge of the California desert in the 1970s. Ares, who cares for Malcolm and creates elaborate imaginary games for them to play begins to feel that Laurel's marginal way of life is harming them all. Silver disturbs the surface of familial relations, baring both their inevitable beauty and ugliness. F...more

I don't read fiction often anymore, but Marisa Silver's latest book is the best excuse to read more of it. I was captivated by the characters The God of War, and that's probably what was most refreshing. Our fiction these days, in books and movies, mirrors the lives presented by our news media—full of rude, callous, soulless people. I'm tired of films and books about people I hate. Nothing can redeem that kind of story.

This is a great book about an adolescent boy dealing with an autistic brother. He feels responsilble for his brothers behavior because he accidently dropped Macolm as a child. His whole growing up experience is tainted by the guilt he feels for this act. It is not until the end of the book that he relizes his brother's affliction is not his fault.

This book was amazing...a true coming of age story...set in a place that most people know little, if anything, about. I met the author on Friday...the way and reasons she writes are so different from most of the authors I have met...I totally recommend this to ANYONE...I'm going to have Ben read it now.

It was ok, but by the end I was skimming pretty quickly, the narrative resolution seemed awfully predictable. And the closing adult voice didn't seem believable in the slightest.

Short stories were craftier, but this stripped-down, tragic and human tale is more heart-breaking than Kite Runner.

This book captures the innocence of adolescence in it's finest. I highly recommend this book.
