Is this a book about natural theology vs. Dogmatic theo.
Much clearer than the lily books.
Like so many artists kevin is simplifying with age.
Trying real hard to be a classic.
I don't think it is.
What chord is chasing the moon and failing, striking in kids?
The moon is WHAT? to kids. ALL that they want?
Maybe im missing something but it seems like a "stretch"

Kevin Henkes’ Kitten’s First Full Moon won the Caldecott Award in large part for its mesmerizing use of colors. This book possesses a brilliant sparkle and glow—it’s done entirely in black, white, silver, and gray. Henkes perfectly contrasts these four colors to animate the book with an experience of beholding a full moon. Then he adds an adorable white kitten in this setting, and the story is ready to roll. The kitten sees the full moon as a bowl of milk. She wishes to have a drink, so she leap

I actually liked this book. "Kitten's First Full Moon" is about a kitten who sees a full moon for the first time, hence the title. The fun thing about this book is that the kitten thinks that the moon is a big bowl of milk. Throughout the book, the poor little kitten tries his best to reach the "bowl of milk" but he has no luck. He keeps trying and trying to gel closer to the "bowl" so he can taste the delicious, creamy milk, but he can't quite reach it wherever

This book has grown on me as I've read it over and over with students as part of our Caldecott unit.
The expressions on the kitten's face, the subtle use of shades of grey, the layout of the pictures, and the patterned text combine to produce an example of stunning simplicity.
The kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk and tries various ways to catch it. Period. That's the whole story. But the way we are led through her escapades elicits our emotions: we laugh, feel sorr More...

This picture storybook by Kevin Henkes is the 2005 Caldecott Award winner. It’s about a kitten who just loves to drink milk. This kitten wants milk so bad that it tries to lick the moon. Then, when she tries to lick the moon, she gets a bug on her tongue! Next, she tries to catch the moon and she ends up falling down the stairs. The entire book, Kitten tries to think of everything she can to reach the moon (or the bowl of milk as she sees it) but she only ends up hurt, scared, or more confused t

"Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes tells the sweet story of Kitten, who believes that the full moon is a bowl of warm milk. After a long quest to reach the bowl of milk, Kitten climbs a tree and sees that the pond below is also a large bowl of milk. She becomes very discouraged when she falls in the pond and becomes cold and wet. However, predictably, when Kitten arrives home there is a bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch. Henkes story can be best described as cute an

Kitten mistakes the night moon for a bowl of milk in the sky, and repeatedly tries to drink from the illusion by running at it, climbing towards it, and jumping on it. a) The most attractive element of this book is the use of all black and white illustrations that help to create an illusion which is the basis of Kitten’s confusion. The illustrations also create a nighttime mood that establishes unity throughout the story. b) The black and white illustrations effectively associate the round shape

This is an adorably illustrated and sweet story of a kitten that just wants the bowl of milk sitting in the sky. My son loves this story because I infuse it with a lot of emotions. When kitten can't get the milk, I make it sad and I frown. When she gets hurt, I touch him on his head or ear to indicate where she got a little banged up. When she gets her milk, I smile and cheer.

I have been reading Kevin Henkes’ works ever since I was a child and every one of his children’s books always featured mice as the main characters. Well, imagine my surprise when I finally found a book by Kevin Henkes that was about a cat! “Kitten’s First Full Moon” is a Caldecott Medal award winning book by Kevin Henkes and it is about a small kitten who tries to grab a bowl of milk in the sky (the moon!) “Kitten’s First Full Moon” is a truly cute book that every child would definitely love

Kitten's First Full Moon is simplistic and humorous, which will captivate all-ages through repetitive phrases, rhythmic text, and a sequence of events. The sequence of events entails the desire, action, consequences, and finally the resolution to the kitten’s goal. There is a beginning and ending to the kitten’s adventure. In between (the beginning and end) the author illustrates the kitten’s movement, which makes it possible for the younger audience to follow the kitten from point A to point B.

I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book. The text was big and easy to read. The simple repetition of this book made some parts predictable. The author's use of dynamic balance was visible throughout the book as well. The pictures in this book were made using many simple, geometric shapes. Kitten’s First Full Moon
4 out of 5 stars
The way Henkes illustrates portrays the setting really well with a palette of grays, blacks, and whites with colored pencil and gouache. Perhaps color was not used because the night is black, which is the setting of the story. Henkes uses a lot of patterns and repetitions in the art with thick, broad lines. There are not fine details in the illustrations; the vagueness of some of the drawings creates an almost textured look to the page. More...

Grade Level: (K-1) Beginning K would be able to listen and then eventually read and 1 would be able to read independently.
Henkes uses interesting artistic angles in the story. His lack of color provides a nice night time atmosphere. It allows the reader to focus mainly on the kitten and the moon, the two basic things in the story. Also, the moon seems to grow and get larger each page as the kitten appears to try to get closer to the moon. The thick blank lines give the story More...

Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes is an adorable (and it's almost impossible to not use the word adorable) tale of a kitten's first adventure during a full moon. The kitten ventures out to figure out what the full moon entails for her and how much trouble the little thing can get into before the night is over. Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes was the 2005 Caldecott Medal winner. I gave this book five stars. This picture book is intended for readers from preschool to grade two but its themes are universal. The book follows kitten in her many attempts to find that big bowl of milk, which happens to be the moon. She runs, she jumps, she climbs, but to no avail. However, when finally returning home, she finds that dish of milk waiting for her, and she is happy. This book symbolizes our dete

Wow!This enjoyable picture book is a must read. The fact that is black and white in a world where everything is color make it even more interesting. When I looked at the cover, I was biased because I like color in picture books. After reading it, all I can say is that color is not needed for this particular story. After all, the story happened during a full moon night and everything must look black and white.

I have enjoyed Kevin Henkes books for years, conducting author studies with students, comparing and contrasting the characters in his humorous stories and even co-creating a readers theater play with my third grade students of a classic favorite—Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse. For some reason, however, Kitten’s First Full Moon, does not hold the same allure and attraction for me as Henkes other beloved picture books. Yes, it is written for a younger audience.
