The fact that is book is intended as a chick-lit romance would normally have me heading for the hills, but I had heard its animal protection content went above and beyond that found in most fiction, so I decided to give it a try.

Hiss, Whine & Start Over is indeed a chick-lit romance, but consider that aspect the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down. Mahlow is the adult equivalent of juvenile fiction writers like Peg Kehret, in that she weaves animal welfare messages and informat

Ok. I fibbed. I didn't actually finish the book--well, I kind of did. I just decided I was finished after 100 pages of boredom and frustration. Sadly, I wanted to like this book. I love animals, support animal shelters, and admire anyone who works with animals, especially those who have been abandoned, neglected, forgotten, or abused.

I am an animal shelter employee. I bought the book because I overheard two co-workers discussing it. Most of what the author says about animal shelters and compassion fatigue is right on the money, in my experience. I loved the book, but her tendency to compare her characters to dog breeds got on my nerves.
