My grandmother used to read me this book between puffs of her cigarette. How I loved this story...it's the tale of two kittens, Hush and Brush. They have buckets and buckets and buckets of paint, but none that are the color green. Refusing to have their spirits crushed by the evil paint manufacturing company, the two decide to make their own green by mixing various colors together. A series of delightful accidents ensue.

I think The Color Kittens is probably my favorite out of all of Margaret Wise Brown's books. Illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen, the artwork is playful and imaginative, supporting the text and bringing it to life. This book has the sweet story and delicate, musical way of rhyming that is so typical with Brown's books...but it doesn't always rhyme. I don't know about you, but when I'm reading aloud a children's book that has the exact same rhyme-rhythm pattern over and over and over, I sta...more

People with young children, or people who like to do acid
I like this book. Everything is out of proportion and weird. I don't want to give away the ending, but it's pretty cool when the kittens mix all the colors together. I was really hoping for a rainbow...but it was something else.
My favorite page is the one where people live on islands and have houses only big enough to shelter their loaves of bread.

The Color Kittens tells the story of two kittens, Hush and Brush, which have buckets of paint and try to mix different ones in order to make their favorite color, green. The kittens end up making all sorts of other colors before they finally find that yellow paint and blue paint makes green paint. This is a concept book that teaches the child reader about colors, more specifically that two separate colors can make a new color. When the kittens discover a new color, Brown incorporates rhyming in...more
This is a Little Golden Book that I remember from my childhood. My mom says I used to request it a lot. It's all about mixing colors. I remember the text better than the illustrations, although I just paged through the book and I don't know why I don't remember these illustrations, as they are very distinctive and kind of trippy. I haven't read it to my son yet to see what he thinks, but I can still remember the last line: "There were all the colors in the world and the color kittens had made th...more
This was one of the books that I used at a cat and kitten storytime the week before last.
Hands down, it was the *most* popular book!
I mean, this is along side of Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes (Caldecott winner) and a new book Fuddles about a very fat and spoiled cat.
Curious, I tried two other Margaret Wise Brown books (author of Goodnight Moon and others) and lo and behold! I found the same result.
I found a book about a girl and a bear that live in the same house! There was not one...more

Adorable book, although I'm not sure I am posting in the right edition, it has the right cover page but it isn't hard cover and mine comes with a 33 1/3 RPM Record which I haven't gotten to listen to sense record players are hard to come by but the introduction beginning with "You will know it is time to turn the page when you hear the Kittens meow like this..." makes me squeak with love of cuteness.
I love this book for young children who are starting to find their artistic side. The book has two kittens brush and hush who loves to paint but who did not ave all the colors to paint, so they started mixing colors to discover new ones. This book is an excellent way to introduce the color wheel to children.
This book was great for teaching colors. I would definitely use it in a younger classroom during a color unit. Also had cute rhymes.
Still as imaginary as when I read it as a kid, all those colors. The three kittens try to make green with all their paint

Margaret Wise Brown wrote hundreds of books and stories during her life, but she is best known for Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. Even though she died nearly 60 years ago, her books still sell very well.
Margaret loved animals. Most of her books have animals as characters in the story. She liked to write books that had a rhythm to them. Sometimes she would put a hard word into the story or poem....more
