People were dying. Bodies were lying along the streets. Air raid sirens were about to go off at any moment. Nobody was shown any mercy.

For Anna, life had always been about music. An aspiring pianist and composer, she studied at the renowned Leningrad Conservatoire under some of the greatest musicians to ever walk the face of the Earth. Her studies came to a halt, however,

What a fantastically beautiful book.

I'm going to say it right now: I'm not into music. GASP. I listen to it, any kind, but it's usually just something to keep my mind focused on a project or two. Never did I think I would actually GET it. Somehow, through words, by creating sound out of ink and letters, this novel made me suddenly love music. It made me see how powerful a few notes and cords could be. I was transported to a world of sound and song through a novel about war. All this cuts a sharp

A bitter sweet Symphony of word.

I have never read a story as close to my heart as Sounds of War, by Cindy Chan. Mainly because of my own history in music. Finding my younger memories of my own father corresponding so closely to that of Anna’s father. But let us review this amazing book.
It is the summer of 1941, Russia. A young girl named Anna lives with her family in Leningrad, Russia. As fa

Sounds of War is a brilliant journey through a young girl's struggle through one of the worst sieges in history - Stalingrad 1940s. We follow a beautiful young Russian girl named Anna. She's talented pianist and a very likable person. You'll fall in love as you meet her and her best friend Isaak in the shining antebellum halls of the Leningrad Conservatoire. If you've grown up with the classics by Chopin, Ravel, and Tchaikovsky, you'll be captivated by how this story uses their melodies to paint ...more

This book was fantastic. Each character seemed well thought out, like they were real. The struggles they went through, the way Cindy described the music and Ana and Isaac's feelings were like they actually existed. It is amazing how she was able to do this. Overall, this is an AWESOME book, i would defenitely recommend it for anyone to read!

I was maybe not fair with this book as I kept comparing it to The Bronze Horseman which is also set in war torn Leningrad 1940s. I did enjoy the book I just felt it lacked the emotion of TBH and I could not stop comparing the two.

My favorite part of the book is how music represents Anna's world. It carries her through the struggles of the war, her life, and gives her hope for the future.

Wow...such a powerful book! It reminded me of many things, a little of The Book Thief, a little of the Notebook, and a little of the Zion Covenant series, and yet it was beautifully original! Instead of words, Anna loved music, and she was good at it. Isaak totally reminded me of Noah from the Notebook, but you can't help but love him, and when he plays! I could easily i
