I read this book right after finishing Michael Moore's Stupid White Men, full of righteous indignation and certainty of our country's decline into hell. One day while reading Stupid White Men on the bus into school, I was recommended by a random stranger to definitely read Franken's book if I was enjoying Moore's. And I'm so glad I took the advice.

Although the subject matter is similar in content and views in the two books, I just BELIEVED Franken and enjoyed his book so much more. He tends to...more

Franken’s politics and his exposure of the witless right wing of the 24/7 news media are spot on, however I didn't find the book all that funny. To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of Franken's comedy, finding him more entertaining when he's wearing his political commentator hat and unloading on the GOP. Though Lies and the Lying Liars... is a bit dated, there is a prophetic feel, considering what I feel we are now witnessing - the beginning of a long but steady crumbling of the conserv...more

Why I love this book:

1) Definitely one of the funniest book titles I've ever seen

2) Remember when, for years after 9/11, so many media and entertainment figures held themselves back from criticizing Bush administration? Al broke the silence quite a bit with this book, which was basically a "bullshit" cry heard 'round the country. After that it seemed to be way more ok for others to start speaking out. You may think he's too moderate but he's pretty clever at calling bullshit ...more

Franken has a quasi-Socratic disingenuousness. It's not quite that he claims ignorance while exposing the ignorance of others. What Franken claims is that he's a comedian, in contrast with the apparently serious political commentators he skewers. And he really is funny. And sharp. I laughed out loud at "Loving America the Al Franken Way," a grab bag of facets of America, rated on a good/bad/weird scale.
But often Franken sounds deadly serious. In the same chapter, responding to the c...more

I have to ask myself: If my politics leaned to the Right would I have enjoyed this book? If I had the capacity to recognize Quality Satire that expressed an opposing an opinion, would I feel the same way? I'm not sure. It's almost impossible to be truly objective. That being said, as a liberal, I enjoyed this book. I was probably a little late in picking it up (it's 2008, I believe the book was published in 2004?), and it basically reaffirmed things that are currently common knowlege (as we...more

I used to see Al Franken on saturday night live as Stweart Smally. He was even in Trading Places with Eddie Murphy (he has a small part towards the end of the flick) but I never found him to be particularly funny. But then I saw a documentary called Air America. It was about the first real Liberal radio station in America and Franken was an intergal part in keeping it afloat despite all the negative press the right-wing tried to smear it with. So I walked by a book store one day and there was a...more

Al Franken is to be commended for exposing Fox Television and its supposed "news" commentators in this book which might be profitably read alongside a viewing of the documentary film, Outfoxed. I read it at the request of a friend. At the time, most of it was above my head as I do not watch television. Since then, however, thanks to the aforementioned film, a Canadian Broadcasting documentary on the same subject and some study of film clips of Limbaugh, O'Reilly and others available...more

I don't have many five star books on my list; this one made the cut because I laughed and laughed and laughed, often out loud. Thinking back, other books have made me chuckle or smile, but I can't remember any other book just tickling my funny bone like this one. Al Franken is clever but he's not this funny in person. Team Franken, discussions with God, exposing the lies of famous conservatives, and particularly, the field trip to Bob Jones University - all classic material. What's more, Frank...more

Everything any intelligent person has ever suspected about the complete and total intellectual dishonest of right-wing mouthpieces (Coulter, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, etc.) is absolutely true.

Franken breaks down the agenda and the lies of these folks in a humorous yet honest and actually heartfelt manner, turn-by-turn and page-by-page in this thoroughly and liberally (pardon the pun!) endnoted, footnoted, and documented book. This is the book to give your soft-core Republican friends that ...more

I listened to the audiobook version, read by Franken. It managed to make what could have been a very dry account of ways the conservative media spins the facts to make their points into an entertaining, amusing, and educational experience.

(And yeah, it's not just the conservative media - it's natural for every side to cherry-pick facts that support their positions. But as a liberal, I enjoyed this, and parts of it got me even more fired up about the issues.)

I'd contrast this to e.g. Colber...more

I think everyone should read this book.

It's not because I'm a liberal who enjoys the scathing comments about the not so liberal (although I did enjoy that part). Rather, its a very funny, well written book. I laughed. Out Loud. In the middle of the gym.

The other aspect of the book that I believe qualifies it as a book that everyone should read is its concept of fact checking and spin. Its funny to see how you can take any statement out of context to make it say what you want it to say. ...more

It's okay. I think that this is a tough topic to tackle for the length of a book, and though humorous, I don't know that my interest was carried through the whole thing. It's hard for me to want to read about politics, because it's so overwhelmingly depressing.

Some parts in this book rattled on, & most of it was a funny re-telling of that which I mostly already knew and agreed with. So I started skimming for the funny parts, then it was hard to figure out which parts would be funny, so I...more

I actually listened to Al Franken read this on Audio CD, and I loved it. The advantage here is that Al plays all the quotes by the people he's bashing (with a little more context) and he himself is just very funny how he reads.
I know the subtitle's supposed to be a joke, but this book is WAY MORE fair and balanced than anything by bona fide Ass-Holes (capitalized) like Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter (they are the Zeus and Hera of assholes). This book exposes them and all their logical fallaci...more

Al Franken does a pretty good job of avoiding most of the bogged-down liberal rhetoric and concentrates more on pointing out the lies of Fox News and Neo-Conservative pundits commit on a daily basis. In journalism, the greatest sin is to lie. Unfortunately, most news channels, papers and political shows lie constantly; not just tell "half-truths", but outright lie. I'm aware Franken is a liberal and I will never subscribe to liberal politics, Al Franken at least does a good job expl...more

The book is a bit dated, but still filled with interesting and fun Al Frankin stories. You learn a lot about dirty tricks from the right and not so much about stupid mistakes on the left. It is unabashedly partisan, but never stoops to the hateful.

If you can get the audio book version, its well worth it. Al Frankin "reads" his own work. And, it's just classic Franklin -- filled with sound effects, excellent imatations of various celeberites, and just generally good comic timing.

this book is an excellent account of what most americans are too lazy to figure out for themselves - that the republicans and their cronies are liars. and not just your typical political liars, i.e. how every politician who has ever walked the face of the earth is a liar. i'm specifically talking about how their lies corrupt the very fabric of american society, turning neighbors against neighbors, promoting a culture of ignorance, creating a wave of petty and empty patriotism that has created so...more

I like Al Franken, because he tells it like it is, but I could do without the crude language and childish attempts at humour. I do not consider myself olitically to be "conservative " or "liberal" (labels I find to be divisive in our society), but I want us to find the balance of law & liberty that God intends for us to live by. That being said, I believe the Republican Party has allowed itself to be infiltrated by those who have no doubt that what they believe is right a...more

Funny...outrageously funny....then sad, almost depressingly sad...then funny again once you realize January 2009 is almost here. Word to the wise, don't listen to the audio book while trying to get some sleep after your toddler has gotten you up for the third time in the middle of the night...it is so funny you won't want to fall asleep. Oh, and also, don't try to listen to this when your toddler is awake...unless you want him thrown out of preschool when he repeats some 'colorful' language.

I would recommend this book to intellectual conservatives so that they simply have more ammo to disassociate themselves from the neo-cons. I actually respect true conservative thought and this administration was not it. At all. And Franken gives a funny, sometimes enraging, flogging of the neo-con media.

It's a great book. I think, however, it preaches to the choir since the person who would read this is a liberal to begin with in the first place.

And he DESTROYS Ann Coulter and Bill O...more

Great book. And easy read, and I loved the subject matter. The first 1/3 of the book was very well researched and fact-based, but had too much funny stuff. The middle 1/3 had nothing but liberal love, and waned from the fact-driven lies (let's remember the title of the book, Al). It comes back to the original point in the end.

I wish Al Franken wasn't so damn funny, so his stellar research and content could be taken more seriously by more people. I look at the cover of the book, and all I ca...more
