Do you really want to hear what happen at the beaches of Normandy? Have you ever heard about those who were mentally scared and was put in mental hospital?

This is the journal from corporal Scott Pendleton Collins. Corporal Collins wrote his journals to express his feeling, since he was far away from his home comfort and has never seen war close up front, he always wrote how he fear overruled him and how death always made him suffer. As he goes through out the war with his buddies, h...more

The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins is a historical fiction book about soldier about to enter World War II. His name is Scott Pendleton Collins and he is waiting in England until he gets his chance to enter the World War.

Scott is very eager to enter the war. He does not know what he is getting himself into. On the night of June 5th, 1944 Scott is on a boat headed towards the beach in Normandy, France. Once he and his unit arrive on the beach he sees that the task ahead of him is t...more

The journal was given to the author by his uncle Richard. And I was awarded to read it as a usual recommendation from our local library. I don't regret. Walter Dean Myers is a good story-teller. He describes hard things so simply, taking the most sencere form of writing - the diary of an ordinary soldier, Scotty, during his fought in the World War II. So, "the central player in this story is the war itself", says the author in the epilogue.
Nearly in every episode of this book yo...more

The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins, a fiction book wrote by Walter D. Myers, takes place along Normandy though the deadliest beaches of Omaha Beach though the bloodiest war of St. Lo. This book is full of invasions, battle plans, campaigns, and tragec deafs.

"The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins, A World War II Soldier, Normandy, France, 1944" I strongly recomend this World War II book nd you will too.

Recommends it for: mature readers who want to learn basics and details of the Normandy Invasion in an engrossing way
This book was from the perspective of a young man, only seventeen, who joins the army and fights against the Nazis in France. It is not lacking in violence, slighty risque references to young women, and some swearing, which makes it hard to recommend for young readers, which I thought this book was targeted towards. However, violence was part of the war, so that at least could not be sugar-coated in an accurate account.

Some of the writing is quite brilliant in its cold reality, suc...more

Myers destroys any notion that war is romantic in this brief but highly compelling journal of a 17-year-old boy of the South that begins with his arrival in England two weeks before D-Day. Young Pendleton doesn’t know much about Hitler but desperately wants to have his picture over the mantle alongside those of his World War One veteran father and Civil War veteran great-grandfather.

This is not the big-picture story of World War Two, just the very personal and highly moving view of a ...more

Even though I've found myself delving into the YA genre recently and do own a few Myers books this isn't a book I'd typically pick up. I forget where I acquired it at and even why I picked it up when I did. I think I just needed a quick one. This ended up taking less than one day with me reading another book at times also.
The first few pages didn't seem to flow for me and I was afraid it would be like this throughout. After finishing I think maybe it was just because it wasn't a book I no...more

My review on this book is very good. Well I think so. Ok the good things I like about this book are the action ,WOW even though I did not see the action but I could picture it very well in my head of what was going on and the emotions in this book. Everything in this book was a true story ,and all this stuff the main character goes threw is real not fake real. His name is Scott an average boy that got out of high school to join the army in World War Two and go to college after so. He has the jou...more

Although it's not exactly my favorite kind of book it was historical, informative, occasionally humorous, and even action packed at some parts. It took place during World War 2, through the eyes of a young soldier. He's trying to live up to his Fathers' and Grandfathers' accomplishments as they both served as war heroes themselves. The book is his own journal detailing many major events of World War 2 such as "D-Day" and other large battles and massacres from his own perspective. Many ...more

This was a very sad book, the beginning was the worst though! I got more and more interested as I read. This isn't the kind of stuff that I'm into but I have to do a genre study at school and my friend told me about the Dear America books so I tried one and I just couldn't get interested in it so I just stopped reading it but I did give them another chance and I read this one. Scott Pendleton Collins is an American soldier fighting in France in 1944 he sacrifices his life to do this. He writes l...more

This was based on a true story. It took place in 1943 when U.S. troops planned to make a attack against the German military. Scott Pendelton Collins was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He died in 1990. He survived the whole war with his trusty M-1 rifle.

He has a couple friends with him but his best friend is Bobby Joe. Bobby Joe is also from Roanoke. Bobby Joe and Scott met when Scott was 5 years old. He now is 20 years old and is in the Second World War. His grandfather was in the...more

My Name is America:The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins is a journal kept by a WW2 solider who survived the battle of omoha beach and many more battles. This does a great job of describing how hard it was for soliders in WW2. It is a very sad book, But i can tell that he tried to keep a good attidude during the war. I cannot imagine what it must of been like to see such destruction and death. I would recomend this book to everyone. We need to know what it was like to fight for our country and ...more

Again diving into yet another type of book that I have not explored very much into; autobiographies. I used to think diaries were somewhat girlish and immature, but now that I have read this, it is quite obvious some are the obvious. Told from a soldier's point of view, you don't have any fancy-shmancy stuff; it's all pretty much experiences and facts. Reading this from a professional point of view you could probably pick out many things. As for me, I'm quite content with this level of writ

I thought this was a good book because of all of the action and adventure. I thought it was pretty good how they had a 17 year old rookie be the main Charactor. The story is about a kid who just got out of highschool and goes of to war for world war 2. At his going away party he receives a journal on which he can document all of his experiances. I thought it was a pretty good book.

It is a great book that will lift your spirts and pump you up and ready to take on the world. The characters in this book were Scott. There were no other characters in this book. I really like this book because i am really into the subject of war. World war 2 is my favorite to read about. I think it would be terrorifing to fight on d day and all those other crazy war days. Scott had to write letters to his parents every single day. That would have drove me crazy.

Scott Pendleton Collins is a great American soldier. Though scared, like every one in war, Scott reflects on his past when he was in the states with his family. This is a good book if you like war stories and learning about the past.

The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins A World War II Soldier
Author: Walter Dean Myers Genre: Autobiography

Scott is not an arrogant person. He is a quiet and kind person. Scott shows his bravery during the war. He is both a leader and a follower in the war.

Quick, easy read. I love these types of stories of real, salt of the Earth people who do extraordinary things. The ending is very abrupt. It literally just stops...

I didn't like it. Either it was too fast or too slow (I really can't say which) but, especially for a war diary, it just doesn't come as high as it should.
