T.E. Lawrence is often credited with bringing diplomacy to the Middle East; in the shadows of every great man you will often find an even greater woman. In Lawrence’s case, that woman’s name was Gertrude Bell.

In a time when women didn't go to school, Bell did; in a time when women didn't join the army, Bell secured a job at the Army Intelligence Headquarters in Cairo; she

I wasn't sure what rating I should give this book; probably higher than 3 stars based on how interesting I found the subject matter, both the persistent dynamic Victorian woman and the light smattering of history. We all know the name of T.E. Lawrence but we SHOULD know the name of Gertrude Bell, the apparent founder of an independent Iraq.

The book appears to be a catalogue of errors. The opening sentence refers to the scenic joys of Yorkshire ' . . with its rugged Peak District . . .'. The Peak District is in the county of Derbyshire, some 140 miles and a 3 hour drive to the south of Yorkshire.

I was fascinated to read this, having loved Mary Doria Russell's book 'Dreamers of the Day'. Really enjoyed reading about Gertrude Bell and knew nothing about her amazing mountain climbing adventures before reading this. But I have to say, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping for more details about her involvement in the carving up of Mesopotamia. Nevertheless, it is a most interesting read and she was obviously an exceptional individual. It has made me want to find other books about her ...more

I was fascinated how this woman could have moved within the Arabic world- her travel through the desert in areas where Europeans had little experience and particularly for a woman, traveling, camping and exploring. She was fearless and very strong- both physically and emotionally. It was sad that her life ended without a personal relationship that she so desperately wanted.
