I believe the message, but the packaging is awful. This book seems to be written especially for dogmatic Christians in order to shine a different light on the interpretations of spirituality in Christianity.

Considering the way Christianity is experienced in some parts of America this book may contribute to a more open and loving way of living. Other than that, I would say there are books who get down to the core of our essence along a more simple and clearer path.

This is a long term self paced course.

You will know when you are ready to read this simply by reading the 1st few pages or visiting the reviews and synopsis of the book.

I guarantee it will change your life simply by changing and understanding more about yourself.

This book really laid out for me the differences between the ego and the true Self and allowed me to see which was operating when in my life, mostly in myself but sometimes in others. The concepts in this book are amazingly powerful and the kind of simple that is not easy. But the writing is pretty stilted and gender biased/ Christian-y. While I am not completely through the daily study guide, I have found the readings very helpful. There is not a single female pronoun used for God or even for the participant which I would guess is because of the time period in which it was originally written. That is perhaps the only thing that I felt was missing. I made the translation to fit my gender in my notes. To be fair, this is something that women the world over have had to do for centuries in many different religious works.

No book has influenced me more, nor has had as profound an effect as "A Course in Miracles."

This is actually a 3 volume set of books: a text, a workbook and a teacher's manual, that I read from continuously, and have for the past 31 years. The book is written in three sections. The first section is the longest. That is the main text. It is a challenge to absorb. I often found the language to be be difficult to understand. Yet I believe there is a valid reason for this. I think that the purpose is to challenge the reader to get past their preconceived notions of "what is."

As the text says, it continues to weave an evolving pattern of the underlying principles contained within the course. Some of the passages are absolutely beautiful. They touched my soul. I can truly accept that this course was channeled through the author by Jesus. What is remarkable is that the author, who was a psychologist, had been an atheist before she began to receive the inspiration that she felt compelled to write down.

The course will challenge traditional Christians to let go of their preconceived religious beliefs. The main premise is that we are all one. Our challenge is to let go of our own egos and to develop a relationship with the Holy Spirit to serve as our guide in order to lead a life of peace and joy.

The second section of the course contains 365 daily lessons. This is where I have begun to develop a further sense of my soul. They provide a framework for opening oneself to a more mystical experience which has helped me become more attuned to my spirit.

They are absolutely beautiful lessons that are relatively easy to absorb. They have also strengthened my relationship with Jesus. I have found that I have needed to spend several days working on each lesson. That has required a spiritual commitment and discipline.

Paradoxically, the easiest part of the course for me to absorb was the workbook for teachers. This is the third section of the course. It is written in a language that is easy to comprehend.

The course has been instrumental in helping me to let go of judgment and to embrace my oneness with all of creation. This has helped me let go of limiting labels along with my tendency to compare myself with others. It has also helped me to realize that I am one with all others as I am one with God. I am in Him as He is in me.

I have been working on the course for nearly two years and I am in the process of going through it for the second time. Concepts have been easier for me to absorb as I do this. I encourage the readers not to become discouraged. Just open your minds and be patient with yourself as well as with the course.

The only reason that I gave the book only four stars was because it is initially difficult to comprehend. As for my total experience in working with it, it has had a significant impact upon my spiritual evolution. I would highly recommend this book to all spiritual seekers regardless of their religious backgrounds. The messages contained within it are universal.

Even though The Course seems congruent in most respects with much of the non-dualistic wisdom of the great mystics of all traditions, it nevertheless contains a twist that subverts its seemingly high intent. The manifest wisdom of The Course sells the twist, and its rhetoric obfuscates it.

The twist revolves around the concept of “ego,” which is ambiguous in The Course, and that ambiguity is part of its obfuscation. My discomfort is perhaps from a differing understanding of the meaning of ego. When I take the sense of the term as the dysfunctional aspects of our psyche only, then I can allow The Course's take as valid. Until I am persuaded otherwise, however, I will continue to maintain that our temporal, individuated personality self (aka "small self" or "ego") has great positive value, else it would not have been undertaken by our Large Self.

The small self can well be thought of as "the leading edge of thought." It is not helpful to think of it as a mere, transient illusion, or worse, an impediment or even an evil. Though the small self is not supported by The Course, I believe it is fully supported and endorsed by our Large Self (aka, "High Self"). The value of the small self lies in way it serves as a means for the Large Self to explore and expand itself. It increases wisdom for the whole from its unique perspective and experience. It is a magnificent, creative, exuberant, confident, and loving expression of the Large Self, and needs no justification or apology.

By undercutting the value of the small self, The Course may well have an insidious, corrosive effect on the spiritual health of its students. It causes one to feel there is something intrinsically illegitimate about ourselves which impedes our empowerment and potentiation.

Because of the above, I am inclined toward the proposition that there is a hidden, control agenda behind The Course that has not yet become fully clear. Rather than speculate, however, I conclude with the following reference from the Internet that gives one pause:

“Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. was a psychologist and friend of Hellen Schucman, the channel of A Course in Miracles. He gave the eulogy at her funeral. Groeschel initially read the Course as ‘religious poetry,’ but grew steadily more negative in his assessment of it as the years passed. Most troubling to him by far was the ‘…black hole of rage and depression that Schucman fell into during the last two years of her life,’ the priest explained. She had become frightening to be with, Groeschel recalled, spewing psychotic hatred not only for A Course in Miracles but ‘for all things spiritual.’ When he sat at Schucman's bedside as she lay dying, ‘…she cursed, in the coarsest barroom language you could imagine, ‘That book, that goddamn book.’ She said it was the worst thing that ever happened to her. I mean, she raised the hair on the back of my neck. It was truly terrible to witness.’ ”

This book is huge and will take me a long time to finish. It's not for everyone -- there are a lot of stumbling blocks because of the "Christian"-type language. If you're able to get through it, it will be life-changing. All the other books I'm reading that are related to the Course and serve as help tools have already altered the way I see the world, which is ultimately "my" world, my perception, my projections, fears, baggage, etc. Very happy to be reading this book right now!

This "course" aims to reverse your thought system. It is not meant to be theoretical, although ideas are presented. It is a course in which you are to experience the lessons, that is where the miracles occur. The merit of each lesson will be in its application - the lesson does not care what you "think" about it, or how you "feel" about it, it just wants you to "do" it!

As I have grown in my Catholic faith, the appeal this book once had has faded as the light of the real truth of Christ has become brighter and more profound. The miracles I have experienced as a result of my prayers and faith have been grander and more sublime than any I would have ever "expected". I gave this one four stars partly because of my critical skepticism of religion in general and that is even stronger when I explore new revelations or transmissions. I am also overwhelmed by the potential of the ideas in this book and will take some time to properly absorb and consider them. A Course in Miracles is a miracle! This book helps intelligent, rational people return to a belief in our higher power, God, Jesus Christ. This book explains how to be holy and happy by practicing forgiveness and non-judgement. Life changing but not for everyone. The story of how this book came into existence is unbelievable. I had a hard time with some of the references although I stuck with it and became a different person. The ideas in this book were difficult to get my brain around and some of it did not resonate with me. But the concepts that I could relate to, were enough to slowly change my thinking pattern. Let not their form deceive you. Idols are but substitutes for your reality. In some way, you believe they will complete your little self, for safety in a world perceived as dangerous, with forces massed against your confidence and peace of mind. They have the power to supply your lacks, and add the value that you do not have. No one believes in idols who has not enslaved himself to littleness and loss. And thus must seek beyond his little self for strength to raise his head, and stand apart from all the misery the world reflects. This is the penalty for looking not within for certainty and quiet calm that liberates you from the world, and lets you stand apart, in quiet and in peace.
An idol is a false impression, or a false belief; some form of anti-Christ, that constitutes a gap between the Christ and what you see. An idol is a wish, made tangible and given form, and thus perceived as real and seen outside the mind. Yet it is still a thought, and cannot leave the mind that is its source. Nor is its form apart from the idea it represents. All forms of anti-Christ oppose the Christ. And fall before His face like a dark veil that seems to shut you off from Him, alone in darkness. Yet the light is there. A cloud does not put out the sun. No more a veil can banish what it seems to separate, nor darken by one whit the light itself.
This world of idols is a veil across the face of Christ, because its purpose is to separate your brother from yourself. A dark and fearful purpose, yet a thought without the power to change one blade of grass from something living to a sign of death. Its form is nowhere, for its source abides within your mind where God abideth not. Where is this place where what is everywhere has been excluded and been kept apart? What hand could be held up to block God's way? Whose voice could make demand He enter not? The "more-than-everything" is not a thing to make you tremble and to quail in fear. Christ's enemy is nowhere. He can take no form in which he ever will be real.
What is an idol? Nothing! It must be believed before it seems to come to life, and given power that it may be feared. Its life and power are its believer's gift, and this is what the miracle restores to what has life and power worthy of the gift of Heaven and eternal peace. The miracle does not restore the truth, the light the veil between has not put out. It merely lifts the veil, and lets the truth shine unencumbered, being what it is. It does not need belief to be itself, for it has been created; so it is.
An idol is established by belief, and when it is withdrawn the idol "dies." This is the anti-Christ; the strange idea there is a power past omnipotence, a place beyond the infinite, a time transcending the eternal. Here the world of idols has been set by the idea this power and place and time are given form, and shape the world where the impossible has happened. Here the deathless come to die, the all-encompassing to suffer loss, the timeless to be made the slaves of time. Here does the changeless change; the peace of God, forever given to all living things, give way to chaos. And the Son of God, as perfect, sinless and as loving as his Father, come to hate a little while; to suffer pain and finally to die.
Where is an idol? Nowhere! Can there be a gap in what is infinite, a place where time can interrupt eternity? A place of darkness set where all is light, a dismal alcove separated off from what is endless, has no place to be. An idol is beyond where God has set all things forever, and has left no room for anything to be except His Will. Nothing and nowhere must an idol be, while God is everything and everywhere.
What purpose has an idol, then? What is it for? This is the only question that has many answers, each depending on the one of whom the question has been asked. The world believes in idols. No one comes unless he worshipped them, and still attempts to seek for one that yet might offer him a gift reality does not contain.
Each worshipper of idols harbors hope his special deities will give him more than other men possess. It must be more. It does not really matter more of what; more beauty, more intelligence, more wealth, or even more affliction and more pain. But more of something is an idol for. And when one fails another takes its place, with hope of finding more of something else. Be not deceived by forms the "something" takes. An idol is a means for getting more. And it is this that is against God's Will.
God has not many Sons, but only One. Who can have more, and who be given less? It is for him the Holy Spirit speaks, and tells you idols have no purpose here. For more than Heaven can you never have. If Heaven is within, why would you seek for idols that would make of Heaven less, to give you more than God bestowed upon your brother and on you, as one with Him? God gave you all there is. And to be sure you could not lose it, did He also give the same to every living thing as well. And thus is every living thing a part of you, as of Himself. No idol can establish you as more than God. But you will never be content with being less.

Heavily Christian language was annoying to me, but this was a very influential book in my life since 1986.

Three times I've started the exercises, and I always bailed when I reached an exercise I could not commit to.

I've heard various opinions as to whether this book is good or evil.
...and I'm not sure. The exercises appear valuable, but something always stops me from completing them.

This book truly changed the way I feel about the world. I have read it roughly 5 times since 2003 and continue every couple of years through the lessons. The more you do the lessons, the better you understand the benefits. When you first begin to read this, you may get discouraged and not understand it. If you continue to read, it will make more sense.

Changed my life. I can't put it any simpler. I went from being bitter and resentful about my past and everyone in it that had ever done me wrong to learning how to forgive all that and live in the present. Changed my whole view on life and allowed me to let go of the typical Christian view of God.

This is not a novel. This is a "self-study curriculum which aims to assist its readers in achieving spiritual transformation".

The introduction to the book contains the following summary: "Nothing real can be threatened. Nothin unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God."

Life Changing.
It is a wonderful path to return to Love.

This is my daily study, my daily work, and inspires my daily mantras, and has been since I first read it years ago. I joined a year-long study group to go through the Workbook, and continue the lessons and readings still to this very day.

This is hard slog to read. I didn't finish and was told of Gerald J Jampolsky's adaptation in "Love is letting go of Fear". The second is a more realistic venture regardless of A Course in Miracles reputation.
