J.A. Konrath (aka Jack Kilborn) writes unhinged, serial-murdering nutbagaloons as good as anyone in crime/mystery and that’s what elevates this series above just another standard “also ran” of the genre. His bad guys jar you with their killings.

They torture.

They mutilate.

They dismember.

They even EAT .

They are designed to shock and they do their job proficiently, while Konrath enthusiastically delivers color commentary on the festivities like a hometown football announcer hopped up on caffe

I really enjoyed the first Jack Daniels book, but this one hit it big time!

Maybe it's because so much more happens in Jack's life this time, or maybe it's because the bad guy is seriously bad! Whatever the reason, this story is "cooking with gas". An ex-husband, a boyfriend, a former partner, and a mortician with seriously bad behavior.

This book also has a perfect example of why I'm a dog person.

I really like Jack. In many ways, she reminds me of my other favorite policewoman, Eve Dallas.

What can I say here? "Over all", "on the whole" I like this book and the one that came before it. I like the chase. I like the investigation. I "MOSTLY" like Jack.

I like Jack's new cat.

I plan to get the next book (in fact I've already sent for it).

The problem is there are so many things I don't like that I can't justify giving more than a three star rating.

Mr. Konrath has a gift for giving us the thought processes of his maniacs. This doesn't bother me. I don't however enjoy detailed description

If you thought “Whiskey Sour” was too violent (although this was tame compared to Blake Crouch) or if it was too graphic (seriously? Read Ed Lee if you want to be grossed out), then “Bloody Mary” is most assuredly not the book for you. Like any GOOD sequel, Jack is back, and this time there’s more blood, more gore, and enough action to keep even the most severe cases of ADHD entertained.

There’s always that worry about a “Sophomore slump” when it comes to sequels and new books, but that worry sh

Second in the series, I like the fact that Jack (Jacqueline) Daniels is the highest ranking woman in the Chicago Police Department and she's more than competent.

This series though is just a bit less than sophisticated and smart than I am used to reading. They're not cheesy but just this side of cheesy in my opinion. But they are NOT cozies, too much violence for a cozy. This one just hit shy of my yuck factor.

I like my police detective series to be more edgy, that's all. But I'm probably in th

The second in the Jack Daniels series and it's another really solid read from Konrath. This ended up being a very quick read for me, it was light, easy to get through and mixes both thriller and comedy to great success.
Perfect holiday reading and one that begs you to pick up the next instalment in the series.

Recommended.

A sick killer causes Lieutenant Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels a major headache by attaching her possessions to the removed body parts of his victims. Bu who is close enough to her to have access to her belongings? Jack Daniels is in her forties, tough and as unlikely a heroine as you’re likely to find. Her personal problems constantly get in her way, particularly her aging sex-mad mother, her tangled love life and her partner, Herb, who is suffering a mid-life crisis of epic proportions. Is it more ...more

Second in a series. It starts when Chicago Police Lieutenant Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels gets a report of extra body parts appearing at the Cook County Morgue. When she and her partner go to investigate, they discover two severed arms, linked by handcuffs – Jack’s handcuffs. Soon the police discover what the reader knows already – there’s a maniacally clever serial killer on the loose. And he has special plans for

Joe Konrath is a talented writer. This is the third book I've read of his and I can't wait to read many more. I'm reading the Jack Daniels Series out of order, and it doesn't matter, I'm never lost during the plots in the book. Like the other books in the series, there is lots of action and suspense, some blood and gore, and a touch of mystery. Just when you think the case is solved and the book is done--BAM! He hits you with a twist to keep you wondering what will happen next. What is also ...more

Another good, fun mystery & thriller from Konrath. There's plenty of humor in the interplay between the characters, but also a lot of horror in the story itself. Great combination. I look forward to reading the next.

A serial killer is on the loose in Chicago, kidnapping and mutilating, his victims. The details of the crimes soon have Lieutenant Jack Daniels and her stalwart partner hot on his trail, but the revelation of his identity is only the beginning as this vicious killer has a diabolical plan to escape justice …

A chilling sequel with just the right amount of action, suspense and humor. That said, the first half of the story involving the murders and investigation is better than th

Well, I said I would give this series a second chance. Book two starring Chicago cop 'Jack' Daniels just wasn't for me. While I think Jack is a great protagonist, I just can't get past the gruesome details the author likes to Include. Like the first book in the series, Whiskey Sour, some of the story is from the perspective of the serial killer. I really don't want to read about him fantasizing about peeling someone's face off. No thanks. There's also sex with corpses which apparently isn't ...more

Bloody Mary (J.A.Konrath)An excellent suspense thriller.
Jacquiline "Jack" Daniels is a tough Chicago Cop. She has some personal issues, an ailing stubborn mother, a doting ex-husband and crazy cat. Soon a lot of body parts start to show up at the morgue, and Jack is on the case.

Not only is there an excess of limbs, but Jack's person property is attached to these limbs. Jack is on a quest to find this psychotic killer before he finds her. And shockingly Jack finds she knows who the killer is, som

Is there a serial killer roaming around Chicago. Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels investigates and finds personal items of hers' located on the body parts that turn up.
Add to her life a killer cat, an ill mother, a boyfriend, an ex-husband arriving and, a partner in the middle of a mid-life crisis. Jack is not having a good time.
A good and well-written story.

‘Bloody Mary’ is absolutely hilarious. It also will be horrific and shocking for those innocents in society oblivious of the minds and activities going on around them by those who are twisted and murderous. For the sensitive in the world, you will never never never get through a book or series like this and you will have nightmares if you attempt more than a couple of pages. Personally, I have never read such a black comedy series as this that somehow maintains a coherent plot and a consistent ...more

When Chicago Police Officer Jacqueline Steng married Alan Daniels, she took his last name and her co-workers began calling her Jack Daniels. Although the marriage didn’t survive, the nickname did. J. A. Konrath uses the whiskey reference for the titles of his mysteries.
In BLOODY MARY, Lieutenant Daniels and her Detective First Class partner Herb Benedict, are called to the city morgue when some extra body parts were discovered. They did not belong to any of the three hundred bodies stored the

I had a hard time finishing this book... although I did finish it in a day.

I love the Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series because it's a little mystery with a lot of humor and great characters. While I realized right from the first book in the Jack Daniels series that this series was a lot darker than the Plum series, I still thought that I would enjoy it because of the potential in the secondary characters. However, even though I still like the secondary characters, like Herb, Jack's partn

Yes this book is predictable.
Yes it is also very violent.
Yes there is another serial killer.
Yes Jack does a lot of stupid things.

These are some of the concerns I've seen addressed in the the other reviews. My main issue with this series is Jack's inability to listen to anyone and my inability to picture the character. Jack seems to fight everyone on every turn and doesn't seem to listen to common sense. She comes across as a pushover in her personal life but as an obstinate jerk at work. She doe

Book2, in the Jack Daniels Mysteries

No denying J.A. Konrath produces gruesome material, even if he may say otherwise in his introduction. This second installment is a mystery with a creepy take and a view on the dark side of funeral homes. Relying on subtlety and imagination this latest concerns a mysterious killer who murders women to suppress his recurring headaches and hatches plans to pin the murders on a Chicago cop.

This sequel has a great story line and starts during a sweltering Chicago

Bloody Mary brings back Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels, a Chicago Police Lieutenant and she is even better in Bloody Mary and that is saying a lot because I loved her in Whiskey Sour.

This is a terrifying tale of a truly evil, cunning man. It is hard to imagine a human being that could be that cold and cruel. He is worse than most cold-blooded killers. And it is Jack’s job to bring him to justice but the road to justice is not easy and ma

I am grateful that many authors are giving away part of their series as free ebooks. This gives me an opportunity to learn more about a series and sometimes find books to share with others. Also I can manage to read an ebook without looking at the last page - something I cannot do with paper books. I know that reading the last page of a mystery often ruins the suspense, but the suspense is what I can't live with. I am a wimp when it comes to patiently working through a mystery. I don't like the ...more

Reading book #2 in Jack Daniels series, I think J.A. Konrath seems to like his serial killers and ruining his character's life *sigh*. This book gives Lt. Jack Daniels another serial killer on the loose. Interestingly, readers have met the killer in book #1. Apparently, the killer is a total psycho. Another interesting tidbit is that Jack actually captures the killer half-book. The other half is how the killer manipulates the jury during his trial and how Jack and her partner, Herb deal with ...more

This is book two in the Jack Daniels' series. It is the third I have read, having started with Shaken and being hooked. I plan on finishing the series but I don't want it to end to quickly so I"m spreading it out. I love the humor, the relationships between Jack and the other people in her life. These are so well written that you start reading and you have to keep going until you sind out what happened.

I think I'm turning into an adrenaline junkie. This thrilling thriller (Yeah! I know. Bad pun, been done a thousand times...) delivers quite a high.
Most of the books I have read recently are very well written to get the heart pumping faster, the mind reeling with excitement, the nerves tingling as the story charges forward at breakneck speed to a very satisying climax and release thereafter. Whooo! What a ride.
This is one of the great ones if you also share this adreline kick when reading. Eas

The first three of these were finally returned to the library, so I'm plowing through them -- thus far, I think Konrath's got a great eye for a plot and Jack's a fantastic heroine, but they include a level of serial violence against women that, I don't know, bothers me a little. I want to keep reading because I do dig Jack and I swear I've read every other mystery series on the planet, but there's something vaguely creepy about the consistent ...more

Just finished the audiobook of this and it was pretty good. The flow of this one felt a little different than the first one. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different. The character did some things that really annoyed me; specifically, the way the relationship was handled between her ex-husband and her didn't come across convincingly, and in the process it made her look ridiculous, imo. Still, it's a good series and I plan to continue reading/listening to the books. Recommended.

This is the second in the series and is about a woman in mid-life type of crisis. It seems that everyone is plotting against her, including a deranged killer who is leaving body parts and something that belongs to the detective at every turn. She faces many decisions and problems as she stumbles through this adventure. Many people die along the way.

I urge everyone to read this series. They are quick, fun reads. The characters are fantastic and believable. I love it that Jack is so fallible, so human. The killer is nasty, violent and very crafty. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to get stuck into the next one.

Another great mystery, it was a little more gory than the first book was so if that deters you, I wouldn't suggest reading this book. Overall, I feel really sorry for Jack she seems to never catch a break. And is it just me, or are the men in her life pretty boring? I'd dump them both and move on.

JA Konrath writes the occasionally amusing and often frightening Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thrillers, available in hardcover and paperback from Hyperion and as a spoken word from Brilliance Audio.

The books are a mixture of the humor of Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaasen, Christopher Moore, but with the scares of James Patterson, Thomas Harris, Patricia Cornwell.

Basically, JA rips off everybody.
