A taut, well-written thriller, typical of the genre.

The story involves a former homicide detective who helped a witness "disappear" six years earlier, vowing that under no circumstances would he ever attempt to find her. But such a circumstance does arise, and it is not only the detective who tries to find her, but a professional team of husband-and-wife hired assassins. And so the race is on. The protagonist has the distinct advantage of having helped the witness "disappea...more

After release in 1982, Thomas Perry's "The Butcher's Boy" became a cult classic - the tale of a steely-eyed assassin double-crossed and out for revenge. And while a couple of follow-on efforts didn't quite do it for me ("Sleeping Dogs", "Pursuit"), the cynically dark humor and credible suspense is back with full impact in "Silence", a well-crafted and highly original crime yarn proving again that when it comes to contract killers, Perry knows his craft.

In the latest LA Weekly Literary Supplement, Thomas Perry wrote an essay In a Jam: How Suspense Keeps the Novel on Edge.

Here's the first part:

Suspense isn’t a pleasant sensation. We go to great lengths to manage our lives in ways that will keep us from having to go through periods of uncertainty — particularly when it’s prolonged, and when the stakes are high. But in reading fiction, especially a novel, we crave this sensation of increasing tension, and the higher the stakes, the b...more

recommends it for: any suspense and mystery fan. It's good.
This was a good, very solid cat-and-mouse-chase based suspense novel from a very reliable author. There are some really quite intersting meditations on relationships and the nature of love and marriage--considerably more philosophical than one typically expects (or needs) in popular fiction. There was one major problem with what I think of as "continuity," the keeping straight of the details of the story and plotlines. The author has what have to be concurrent events involving differen...more

I enjoyed Perry's earlier Jane Whitfield mysteries. This is similar in that he's dealing with the issue of people who disappear to escape bad people. This time a private detective in Los Angeles helps a young woman disappear after she is beaten. Six years later he has to find her so that she can clear a man charged with killing her. The book is suspenseful and contains plenty of pleasant twists. The villains are also unusual, not weird, just a hit couple who are truly only in it for the money. I...more

Well, it had a lot of twists and turns not much sex. But I dont read books for that. It was interesting to read about how a person drops out of sight and how easy it is to find someone depending on what they've done to get lost. The surface of the story was one thing and Wendy the girl, appears to be just a nice girl, but in the end we find her to be the pragmatic girl.

A good read and as I would recommend it to others. The killers were mildly interesting as well.

Thomas Perry is fascinated by the art of making people disappear. He is a master of the thriller genre, and I recommend his books. This one is great, but his Jane Whitehead series contains my favorite of his books (oh, and Metzger's Dog is a hoot, too). Good interview with Perry at: http://www.identitytheory.com/...

If you like the Jack Reacher-type of good guy and really bad guys, with crisp dialog and nice plot turns, this crime fiction novel is for you.
His earlier Jane Whitfield books were also very good.

This latest offering from Thomas Perry started off well, but I found it petering off towards the end - almost an anti-climax. 'Nightlife' was a much better read.

Very easy read, suspenseful, well-written. Coming from one who never reads books in the suspense/mystery genre, I thought it was pretty good.

A pretty good, run-of-the-mill thriller. Not a literary masterpiece, but it held my interest.

Good idea that gets a bit long-winded (Perry could have easily cut about 150 pages).
