For Valentine's Day, Charles and I went out to eat at Nha Trang—-very good Chinese and Vietnamese food—-and I had one of the most romantic moments of my life. Charles and I had both heard about Ted Kooser's book of Valentine poems coming out, so I was telling him during dinner that I had heard one of the poems on NPR that morning and discussing what I like about Kooser poetry in general. And Charles was saying what he liked too, which confused me, so I asked if he'd had the chance to read...more

people who've previously read Ted Kooser
Based on this book's concept (a valentine poem written for the ladies on postcards every year) and the topos (courtly romance in a modern setting), I don't know what I expected--but this wasn't quite it.
The poems are quiet and thoughtful, sometimes you have to re-read them a few times to see their romance. Sometimes you understand right off the bat. It was a good addition to my Ted Kooser reading, but I'd recommend starting off with Braided Creek before

As the story goes, Ted Kooser sent the first of his "Valentine" poems to 50 women friends, starting an annual tradition. Printed on postcards, the poems were mailed to a list of women that eventually grew to more than 2,500 all over the US. This is a compilation of 22 of the legendary "Valentine" poems. They are all short and, well, sweet.

I have great fondness to Ted Kooser in general, and I enjoyed this collection, the idea behind it, and the 14 minutes it took to read it. It would be nice to live in a flat place in Nebraska and write poems about mice and celery hearts.

A tender, sweet book of poetry by the former poet laureate. Poems are not complex and the book is a collection of poems Kooser wrote and sent to friends and family.
