Wenige Tage ...more

Nice idea for the plot. That's it. After the enthusiastic reviews in newspaper when the book was published first and with what I know about this authors history as a professional word-worker, his novel is a big diasppointment. Full of clichés of the typical 70s Swiss leftist. This could have been written by a first year college student.

Very disappointed by this book, particularly as its author wrote one of my all-time favourite books (Die Steinflut / The Stone Flood). The start was fine as the writer succinctly sets the scene of a brief encounter with fateful consequences (not so much a one-night stand as a one-minute stand), but after that the book seems to go off at tangents and mainly dwells on characters with whom it is difficult to engage, and whose place in the action seems undeserved.

Towards the end of the book we get a

This is for my German bookclub. Somehow I never finish the books, although so far this one is really good.

It all began with a woman knocking on the window next to where Dr. Manuel Ritter sat on the train. What did she want? He didn’t know until she later showed up at his ear, nose, and throat practice with an unusual request. She wanted a child, his child. No strings attached and confidentiality guaranteed. Even though Manuel was happily married with a couple of kids, he gave in. Several months later a photo arrived. It was a picture of the woman and a baby on her lap. He never heard from her again. ...more

I was very positively surprised by the book - and I found a few quotations that I absolutely adore. Franz Hohler has a very calm style in writing and also sometimes an even highly poetic language. It was a pleasure reading it.
