Camilleri legt Köder aus, die der Leser begierig schnappt und auf die falsche Fährte lockt. Michela Licalzi wurde von vielen Männern begehrt. Als sie nackt in ihrer Villa aufgefunden wird, deutet alles auf einen Sexualmord hin. Zu diesem Verdachtsmoment passt der Lebenswandel, den die Frau geführt zu haben schien. Sie residierte regelmäßig in denselbem Hotel, blieb über Nacht weg und kehrte erst im Morgengrauen wieder zurück. Nach und nach wird das Geheimnis um die Dame aus besseren Kreisen gelüftet.
