“Who’s Shirley Valentine?”
Shirley Valentine was Roz’s favourite film. It was about a repressed, middle-aged housewife from Liverpool who spends her days talking to her kitchen wall. When she leaves her husband for an impromptu holiday to the Greek Islands with a friend she rediscovers her lust for life and decides to stay.
Annie Rivers isn’t middle aged, she’s thirty-one. S

If you've never travelled to Greece, or at least dreamt of experiencing firsthand a breathtaking Mediterranean sunset on one of the gorgeous Greek islands (my top contender has always been Santorini), fret not - this book will likely change that. One of the first things I can tell you about Michelle Vernal's latest book, Being Shirley is that it jolted my sleeping travel bug wide awake. The scents, the sounds, the tastes of Greece were so vivid and tempting that not only was I reliving my ...more

The books starts with a tribute to Roz Annie’s sister as she and Carl- Roz’s best friend as well as Annie’s after her sister’s death reminisce over all their memories of the sister and friend gone too soon. Annie even though dreadfully unhappy in most parts of her life seems determined to marry her long time steady live in boyfriend and do the dreaded hours at the job she hates. Until one day as if sent a message from her sister herself, she has a brilliant idea. She buys herself a one way ...more

The author did a good job bringing the characters to life. The interactions between Carl and Annie were hilariously funny and easy to relate to. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of Ngaire, Annie's ex-soon to be mother-in-law. She definitely was the kind of person that would make you cringe once you found out she was your fiancee's mother. It is a lovely tale of a woman refinding her joy in living. Annie had got stuck in rut in her job and love life. She was miserable in both situations and ...more

I was sent a free copy of this book by the author, which I am really grateful for, as it was very enjoyable and at times addictive reading.

I really liked this book, but sometimes found the travel scenes a bit too long, or maybe it is a spot of envy on my part.

I enjoyed the character of Annie and even more of Carl ... I wish he stayed in the story longer. I laughed and squirmed at his travel adventures.

I want to adopt the greek Bikakis family, especially Mama.

I was seeking a bit more 'badness' i

* I received an ecopy of this novel in exchange for a honest review*

This was a very enjoyable read. I've read this authors other novel Second Hand Jane and thoroughly enjoyed it, so when I was asked if I'd like to read Being Shirley, I quickly agreed. I wasn't disappointed. The main character Annie is very relatable (curly haired women unite!) and interesting. She responds in situations like I would and I enjoyed all of her interactions with the other characters. This story has it all; beautiful

A Kiwi In Greece

A poignant story of a 31 year old woman coming to grips with her going-nowhere life. She breaks up with her fiancé of 6 years, quits the job from hell, and heads to Greece, eventually staying with a long time email friend. In making a new life for herself, she settles old griefs and problems. Although not a romance, it ends with a hint of romance, perhaps in another book? Very enjoyable read.

I started reading this but abandoned the book when I got lost. The author switched venues without any type of transition. One minute the main character was talking to her boyfriend. The next minute she was sitting on a park bench talking to someone else.

Hello, I am a Kiwi author for Harper Impulse UK who lives in the pretty little town of Oxford, in New Zealand’s South Island. Writing is something I have always used as a way of expressing myself. My first foray into the romantic and humorous world of my style of women’s fiction is recorded in my high school journal. In it, much to the delight of my English teacher, I described the heartbreak of ...more
