This book is a beautiful tribute to life as it used to be, as we once lived it on the family farm. The stories told in The Land of Milk and Uncle Honey: Memories from the Farm of My Youth remind me so much of the few summers I got to spend on my grandparents farm. Even more so, it echoes the stories that my father and his siblings have told over the years – of injuries acquired from ti-corner metal milking stools to those garnered by hay hooks; to the summer canning marathons my grandma would ...more

good writing, could be entertaining for the casual reader, taken from columns the author did over many many years for mainstream farming magazines. but not technical or even historical. more just fun reminisces of being a young man/boy growing up working hard on a 700+ acre dairy farm in 1960s-1970s (100 cows (Holsteins, author said he "couldnt remember any of their names, perhaps they didnt have any?, one assumes 100 mamas, so perhaps 200+ cows = lots and lots of work) in souther illinois, ...more

I did not grow up on a farm, but reading Alan Guebert's winning collection of boyhood memories transported me to those Illinois plains in a way that made me feel I had experienced the farm life myself. A true joy to read, the stories are filled with colorful, heartfelt characters and the aching melancholy of an era now swallowed by modernity. Highly recommended.

I didn't grow up on a farm, but the people, land, and stories that populate The Land of Milk and Uncle Honey are extremely interesting and yet familiar. I see the personality traits of Uncle Honey in my grandfathers, who did grow up on farms, and this book made me feel more connected to them and to farm life. Whether you long for the days of family owned farms or want an opportunity to explore America as the agrarian society Thomas Jefferson envisioned read The Land of Milk and Uncle Honey!
