Podcaster Scott Sigler’s first two novels, "Earth Core" and "Ancestor," were released in audiobook format over the internet to more than 30,000 subscribers. His latest work and first major print release, Infected, is an engrossing, albeit gruesome, thriller with a touch of the supernatural and enough blood, guts and gore to please popular fiction fans en masse.

If I could give halves, I would have given it a three and a half. After really thinking about it, I just couldn't push this review up to a four.
I found myself drawn in with the Perry chapters, and those that were done in the infection's point of view. Perry's chapters asked a question of me, "When does one stop being a victim and start becoming a villain?" Though I knew what was going on with Perry, I knew that it wasn't his fault, I really began to hate him near the end. I d...more

Infected is the first major release by the king of podcast fiction, Scott Sigler. It is a wild ride, even though much of the novel takes place in the apartment of one Perry Dawsey, former star linebacker going through the fight of his life.
And this is what makes Infected my favorite Sigler offering: like a great Hitchcock film (albeit with gore never imagined by the great director), Infected drips with suspense. The confining nature of the setting, the battle Perry wages against himself (tak...more

Sci-fi horror fans...
The back of this book said it was "half Stephen King" and "half-Chuck Palahniuk". This is a lie. Scott Sigler writes like neither of them. His writing style is too long-winded for Palahniuk and nowhere near mystical enough for King. If I were to compare him to anyone, I would say Michael Crichton, but rather than plausible techno-thrillers, he writes far more crazy, outlandish, sci-fi horror.
That said, this is not a bad book. There are a couple terrific characters ...more

I actually read this book before I read this book. I first heard the novel via Scott Sigler's podcast, where "Infection" first appeared. This is the print version of the same story (retitled to "Infected" for copyright reasons), though it's been updated and, in my opinion, improved. While the original was excellent, this version is even better. It's more polished and confident than the audiobook, and it has some nice touches like the symbol drawings and the funky text whe...more

Wow, Scott really goes for the gross-out here. Look our Stephen King. I find Scott's books very readable (what does that even mean?) Ending was abrupt. Possibly setting up for a sequel. I want to know more about it! I may even have nightmares.

Normal citizens are becoming paranoid, slaughtering their friends and family, and setting themselves on fire. The only thing they have in common are strange triangular growths growing under their skin. In an effort to quell the situation before it gains national attention, the president has authorized the CIA to run an op on US soil. The best hired guns and scientists are available, but will it be enough to stop the infection?

Do you like your sci-fi scary? Gruesome? A bit medical? Gory? Do you want a page turner that will keep you up until that last page is turned and maybe have you creeped out for days and sweaty at night? Then this book is most definitely for you. I was, at one point, holding this book, eyes wide, making a disgusted face, squealing and kicking my feet. The writing in this is skillful and the characters are uh... well-fleshed out. Perry is especially vividand while I've never really identified with ...more

I sort of gambled on this. An audio version of the book had already been released for free as a podcast, but I didn't know about that. Then, a PDF of the novel was released free in a different podcast I listen to. I didn't want to read a 300 page novel on my computer screen, so I figured I'd gamble on buying the hardcover.
I was very glad I did. It was a lot of fun, and had a good deal of urgency and interesting twists. And it was also stomach-turningly gruesome at times.

Well, what can I say? I guess the descriptions on the back of the book should have tipped me off. Most described it as "pulpy". That's a bit of an understatement. I had to put this book aside a few times because my gag reflex was acting up. Self mutilation to the extreme, and then the end...the location of Perry's final triangle. Well. That was just toooooooo much, and who could write that? Ew. Plus, the ending was abrupt. However, most of the book was like a trainwreck - I c...more

My entry into the genius world of Scott Sigler. The guy knows how to write. And this story of an "inner invasion" kept me on the edge of my seat. Sigler's books are not for the squeamish, nor the kiddies. Since that time I have enjoyed numerous novels and short stories by this new media master of the macabre. But Infected will always have a special place in my heart. And my kidneys. And my leg...

This is a horror/sf book about an alien *something* that invades through the cells and grows inside people's bodies. The day I started reading this book I got a mysterious bug bite that of course freaked me out just slightly.
This book is fully of creepy ... in a good way! Kind of like good Stephen King, which was nice, because Mr. King hasn't really written anything good in a while.
Recommended, but only if you're not creeped out by creepy crawlies.

I read this book mostly because I was absolutely mesmerized by the cover. The plot was addictive and creative—I couldn’t put it down.
The actual technical writing needed work. I could write as well or better than this guy. I also took issue with his portrayal of gender—men must never show emotion or pain; women are weak and bad at being assertive and therefore getting what they want.
Taken with a grain of salt, though, it’s a fun read.

I got on this "books about an apocalypse" bender and came accross this...yes, I am a geek. Apparently this author is the top-selling podcasting author. I thought the book was really fun and entertaining. Probably already being made into a movie. Fast paced action, sci-fi, alien, virus type book. As much as I hate to admit it, I could not wait to pick it up and finish it. Really good - particularly if you are into the Steven King-type novel...

Spores from outer space settle into moist dark human places and begin to grow, causing itching, swelling, and insanity. Typical tough CIA agent, sexy but savvy scientist, and rogue cop narrow in on victim zero, an ex U of M football star with an anger management problem who happens to be growing a triangular pod seedling in his groin. The plot is predictable and the gore WAY too frequent and lovingly detailed. Not one to enjoy over lunch.

A real stinker / turkey. Melodrama! I don't think I finished the first chapter. Went for gratuitous gross out too much for my taste and I have a tolerance for gross. I've seen better stories from adolescent boys in high school English classes. Poorly done viral apocalypse story, imho. Read Stephen King's "The Stand" or any number of other science fiction writers on the same subject instead.

I didn't like this one as well as his other books. It's just as well written, but I didn't like the way it played out. I found the infection (which comes from space) to be disturbing and the way it was dealt with more so. I also found the main character extremely unlikeable (I honestly suspect this was purposeful). It's sitll avaialbe for free in audio format from scottsigler.com.

I've got a few words for this book: Creeepy! Ewwwwww! and Yeeeccchhhhh!
Although the premise is the same - parasitic beings taking over humanity - it's completely different to The Host. X-Files meets 28 Days Later, anyone? I think people who like horror (Stephen King, especially) would love this. It's got me worried about this darn rash, that's for sure!
