This book was in many ways a great disappointment, in spite of its limited ambition and engaging premise. I set it down and picked up several times before finishing it, which is something that I rarely do and indicative of how tiresome it was to read. Throughout the book, Barton seems perpetually hobbled by the fact that, due to the lack of clear consensus among Old Testament scholars about the dating of much of the scriptural corpus, he cannot give a chronological account of the development of ...more
