The Princess and the Pea, illustrated by Dorothée Duntze.
One of Hans Christian Andersen's briefest tales, The Princess and the Pea was originally published in 1835, in his first collection of fairy-tales, Eventyr, fortalte for Børn. Første Samling. We all know the story of the princess and the pea so i wont bore you with the details. The reason why ive inlcuded this in my review is because of the interesting and inventful way it was used in a year 1 school. Apart from looking at speech, recap and characters of the story, the teacher and class worked very hard on writing their own version but through a play- style.
the teacher wrote a short play script and used 3 chn to silent act the parts of King, Queen and Prince and another 3 to r...more

This short story by Hans Christian Andersen is a delightful read for children in their early years. Based on the life of a prince who is desperate to find himself a princess, the prince goes in search to the four corners of the earth with no luck. He returns home to find a princess knocking on the town gate. Astonished, the queen herself lets her in and agrees to give her a place to sleep for the night. Upon revealing her identity the queen decides to test the validity of her claim. so, the quee...more
I enjoyed the fun illustrations with a variety of animals trying out as princess (elephant, bear, hippo, etc.) and the leading felines, the tiger queen and princess and the lion prince. I have never been that big a fan of the actual fairytale, though, and this one brought nothing new to story. For a more appealing definition of what makes a princess, I recommend The Princess and the Pea by Lauren Child.
The Princess and the Pea by by Hans Christian Andersen, adapted and illustrated by Janet Stevens, is a short, funny version featuring animal characters. It's a story of a prince who wants to marry a genuine princess, and one so sensitive that she can feel a pea through twenty matresses. The search for the right princess is very amusing, with a variety of animals encountered.
The text tells the tale briefly, but with flair.

This tale was okay to me, but maybe for other girls they might consider the story really cute. I thought it was kind of weird how the prince decided to marry the princess who could feel the pea under a whole bunch of mattress. If I were to read this story to my students I would only read to my kindergarten students because the little girls might like it. I would like to hear everyone's different opinion on the story.
This is a remake of the princess and the pea with a twist involving animals... I remember seeing this play as a kid and it was so funny to me. I like how the prince finds his princess with a pea. My favorite part of reading the book to the class is one of my first grade girls said, my mom always told me to eat my peas to become a princess; she was right! I love kids imagination and random words of wisdom.
Different versions of Andersen's stories and of folk & fairy tales provide readers with entirely different experiences - I'm reviewing the one illustrated by Dorothee Duntze. I appreciate the talent of the artist, and all the effort to add rich details and appropriate colors and designs... but I have to say that I, personally, did not care for the style of illustrations.
This is a cute classic fairy tale about proving a girl is really a princess. It has been around for generations and still continues to be a favorite. It has the themes of royalty and love. I have always enjoyed reading this story and know that many other people have as well.
A prince is severely hindered by his mother in his search for a suitable princess until a soggy girl shows up on his doorstep more than willing to sleep on 40 mattresses with a pea underneath, leaving her battered and bruised, thus proving her to be a true princess.
I remember this book when I was little! It's a great book to introduce fairy tail writing. A fun writing lesson could be a writers workshop that students write a fairy tale about whatever they want using characteristics addressed in "The Princess and the Pea".
I remember reading this exact book when I was a kid and just loving it. M. loved reading this book, and I think she was just as intrigued with the pictures as I was at her age. :) We might just have to get our own copy :)
I read this book many times when I was young. I loved this story and how the princess could feel the tiny pea through all the mattresses. This is a book I will have on my bookshelf
Cute story; still can't figure out whyyy she should have felt that pea. I mean, I get it was because she was supposed to be sensitive and stuff, but still. IT'S A PEA!!
This book is great. When I was little I loved this book because I always called myself a princess and I have sensitive skin so I knew that I really was a princess.
This is a traditional telling, but with animals... for whatever reason it was one of my daughters' favorites.. likely due to the animal illustrations.
The pictures are very unique, but also very child friendly. The noses are all pointed and cartoon like, which is sort of the focus of the book; it is simplistic style with the watercolor medium. The king in the picture looks similar to the King Louis the 14th of France, which could lead to a conversation about real Kings, Queens, and Princesses. The author also plays with colors too as most of the book are in blue hues to represent outside, inside the hall of the castle is gray, but the pages le...more
This dumb princess is all picky and shit when some dumbass puts a pea under her mattresses like a stupid dick. Shit is dumb.
I read this when I was little. When I read it again I started to laugh, and I also understood it more!(yipee!)

I leart that you should not trick people.
I like this book because the princess found a pea under the her bed.

I didn't quite get the moral lesson of this... I read this as a child and maybe that was the reason. =p
A princess needs to prove that she is a real princess. She does this by sleeping on top of 20 mattresses and still feels a pea that was placed underneath them all.
Students and teacher could have a grand discussion as to why the princess had to prove herself to the prince. Why was a pea chosen as the object to be placed under the mattresses? Is this book similar in anyway to Cinderell who had to try on a glass slipper to prove she was the owner?

A fun version of the famous fairy tale illustrated with tigers and various other animals.
The Princess and the Pea was very interesting book. I remember reading this book to my children when they were very young and them just loving it. Great choice for a read aloud in class.
I read this to my niece today. What a great story !
This is a fun story about a princess and her restless night because there was a pea under bed. It's a funny intestering story!
I used to love reading this book as a kid!
