This is the third in a series (as I'm sure you spotted) and while I like them I can't quite bring myself to go above 4 stars.

A friend here on Goodreads mentioned that her biggest complaint with the Wardstone Chronicles was (is) that Tom doesn't change much. That is so far true. To be fair however the 3 books I've read so far take place in a period of months (less than a year). As this book ends and spring approaches Tom is about to "celebrate" (not really a good word for it...more

Necromancer emang job pali...more

Much, much, MUCH better than the Spook's Curse, thank goodness! In this third installment of the Wardstone Chronicles, Thomas Ward and his master, the Spook, head over to Anglezarke for the winter season. While there, Tom uncovers more secrets about the Spook's shady past, including a menacing former apprentice bent on destroying the Spook - and the whole County.

Delaney's flair for descriptions has returned full force! Like in The Spook's Apprentice, the setting played a substantial...more

This is the third book in the Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney. This was an excellent book and a great follow up to the first two books.

In this book Gregory and Tom move to the Spook's winter home after being contacted by a man named Morgan, who is a former apprentice of the Spook's. In Gregory's winter home Tom learns many more secrets about Gregory's past and finally gets to meet the mysterious Meg. Things get more dangerous than Tom ever expected when Morgan starts to dabb...more

It seems that the more I read of this series, the less I like them. The writing hasn't changed, and neither has the plot. Different setting this time, but it wasn't enough of a change to draw much interest from me.

I've been mulling this over, trying to put my finger on why I didn't like the book. The writing is good, the ideas are clever, and the storyline sounds like it should be thrilling. What gives?

The only thing I could come up with is that the writing is too ......more

Okay back to review, saya rasa saya akan memasukkan serial The Wardstone Chronicles / ...more

Winter's abound and let me present before you all my views of The Wardstone Chronicles #3 The Spook's Secret by Joseph Delaney.

Here is the summary of the book:

It's going to be a long, hard, cruel winter. And there couldn't be a worse place to spend it than up on Anglezarke. Thomas Ward is the apprentice for the local Spook, who captures witches and drives away ghosts. As the weather gets colder and the nights draw in, the Spook receives an unexpected visitor. Tom doesn't ...more

Wah bisa juga ya spook tua ini romantis...

Aku baca versi inggrisnya,
covernya bgs bgt yg versi inggris, ilustrasinya juga
ceritanya apalagi
yg jelas emang lebih bgs dr buku 1 ama 2, soalnya lebih sarat emosi
buku ke 3 ini kelam dan dingin
sedih pula >.<

I am currently reading book 4 in this series and so I’ve got to quickly write this review before I get any further in the book lest I confuse myself with both plots. Tom Ward continues his apprenticeship under the current Spook. The seasons are passing quickly and with the approach of winter, the Spook moves to his desolate winter home. Without much ado, they find themselves battling a boggart that nearly kills the Spook. Luckily, Alice manages to save the day once more time. Also, there is...more

Of the three books in this series that I've read, this is my favorite so far. And I absolutely adore the illustrations in the book!

Tom and his master Gregory the Spook have to travel to their Winter home for the season. Alice, who has been living with them, is not allowed to stay with them and is sent to live with a family nearby. Alice and Tom aren't pleased, but as usual, the Spook has his reasons.

Upon arriving in the Winter home, Tom learns of the Spook's secret. His o...more

After a great beginning for the series, I felt the plot for The Curse of Bane was logically weak. This book, however, was a step back in the right direction. Following the pattern of the two previous books, the Spook carries this story along (i.e., for me, he's the strongest character and the reason I keep reading). He gets additional depth in the confrontations with Meg, Morgan and the stone-chucker.

Interesting take on purgatory and how our perceptions during mortality dictate our e...more

I thought that this book was a lot like the others. The author hasn't gotten any better or worse in his writing. Plus he hasn't changed the storyline dramatically. Despite a new character. Although the one big change i noticed is in his ,ocassional, illustaration. I personally like them, but sometimes they give away too much in a chapter. But his drawing skills have gotten extraordinarily better. I lokked at a picture from the first book and this one and their was so much difference. I think he t...more

I think these books are actually better when listened to. I listened to the first two and read this one. The big bad seemed neither as big nor as bad as in the first two books. And by the 500th page I grew tired of little Tommy Ward asking himself question after question to tell the story or to try and build suspense.

But this leads me to a few questions of my own:

Why does the spook make them eat only cheese before the go off to fight evil? What's wrong with fighting impe...more

I just don´t know why I keep reading this series. Don´t get me wrong, it is good (though I liked the first two installments better) and kind of relaxing - but at the same time it´s utterly infuriating.
Let me tell you - I SUPPORT WITCHES. Meg and especially Alice! The old spook is getting on my nerves - (Tom is twice as good as old Gregory himself, if you asked me). A man does NOT keep the love of his life locked in a cellar for who knows how long. I don´t care that she´s a lamia witch - a m...more

I have not read the previous two, but found it very easy to jump in mid stride and join the story. That says a lot. I need to go back and listen to the rest. Many of the ideas were darkly original (not overdone overused themes and ideas like other books I've listened to more recently) and very very spooky. I enjoyed listening to the story and look forward to getting caught up on the others. I highly recommend this audio book to anyone who likes fantasy. It was also nice to listen to a strong fem...more

Recommends it for: teenage boys who love scary stories
This book was fun, although not the best of the series. The first two (Curse of the Bane and Revenge of the Witch) are a fun ride. The mythos in this series is original and clever.

No surprise, but the series just keeps getting better!
I loved this book. I enjoyed the character development of the Spook when we get a further glimpse into his life and his love for both Meg and Emily.
I also like the development of Tom's character. I've adored him throughout the first two books, and I liked him even more in this one. I enjoy the close relationship he shares with his mam, the budding romance he has with Alice, and the mutual respect he gets from the Spook.

I feel really bad that Morgan had to die, but he deserved it for all that he has done to his "sister" and the other souls that cannot go on because of him. I thought that Tom was really brave for what he did against he Goloth. I wonder what is in the trunks that Mam gave Tom, but I already read the fourth book and it said that the first trunk has lots of books and money, and the last two has Mam's sister encased in them, asleep like Meg Skelton does for months and months. I wonder what...more

This book is about a young boy named Thomas Ward. He is an apprentice of the spook who keeps the county at peace. In this book he must stop Morgan, one of the spook's old apprentices, from summoning Golgoth which will make winter last forever in the county. Tom gets caught by Morgan and has to watch him summon Golgoth. But the spook printed the spell book to summon Golgoth wrong on purpose and Morgan dies because of that.

I read this book because I read the first two books of the last a...more

Winter is coming, so the Spook and Tom go to live in his winter house. The Spook yet again decides that Alice is an unneeded distraction for Tom and decides to fost her off on a farm family along the way. To add to Tom's training, a previous apprentice to the Spook shows up and demands what was his from the Spook. He plans to raise a god from sleep and turn the world into winter. I found Alice to be a very difficult character in this novel. She was incredibly manipulative and selfish and ju...more

This was my favorite in the series so far. Where I thought that the second book kinda went back and forth a lot, this one kept moving forward in just the right paste. It was never boring, always a lot of action going on. I thought it was a really great book and I very much enjoyed it!
The only thing I am missing is the scary parts that I think the first book had. In that one I was actually "scared" but there has not been that same feeling in number two or three in the same way, an...more

The book the last apprentice is one great book. It has many twists and turns. The main characters are Tom, Alice, The Spook, and Morgan. The plot is that Tom has to find a way to save his father's spirit without giving Morgan the power he wants. The setting is an old village. Will Tom be able to save his father and most important the world or will Morgan be the last person alive.

Tom and the Spook practiclly have the same charateristics. They both will do anything to save the villa...more

I purchased the first book in this series because, as I recall, it was one of those If You Love Harry Potter Then You'll Also Love recommendations. I got the book home, and it sat on the night stand for a long time. I think it even went through the Move on the night stand. Anyway. At some point, Grant picked it up and actually read it. And he said that I had to read it.

I'm glad I did. I've rather enjoyed this series, even if I read the first two books in the series during less-than-ste...more

Delaney, Joseph – 3rd series
The Bodley Head, 2006- UK Hardcover
*** Apprentice Tom Ward and his master head to Spook’s winter house in Anlezark. The house’s cellar is full of bound witches and boggarts, including Meg the Spook’s one-time live. But beyond a stone-throwing boggart the greatest threat comes from Morgan, a failed apprentice of Spook. Morgan has taken to the dark arts raising the dead. Now he wants to remove Spook, make...more

In this third volume, Tom and Mr. Gregory head to his winter home, where witches are bound in the basement, and the wild moor looms overhead. More creepy fun, and insight into what drives both main characters. A disgruntled former apprentice is stirring things up in the area, trying to awaken an ancient evil and bring revenge onto the Spook who he believes wronged him. Fast-paced and gruesome fun. I read the whole thing on a single flight. On to volume 4!

Tom is about to experience his first winter as the Spook's apprentice and take his first trip to Anglezarke, the Spook's winter home. Anglezarke is nothing like Chipenden, it is a dangerous and cold place where the dark is felt the strongest. It's going to be a long winter.

When a stranger appears on the Spook's doorstep darkness follows and secrets that have been long buried will surface to bring havoc to Tom and those he cares most about. But the Spook is not the only one who has been...more
